have you played the scenario on?<br> Nightmare 1.12.4<br> <br> (2) How difficult did you find the scenario? (1-10)<br> 6<br> <br> (3) How clear did you find the scenario objectives?<br> Clear<br> <br> (4) How clear and interesting did you find the dialog and storyline of the scenario?<br> The storyline of the campaign is overall quite solid. However, I think the script would benefit from some editing. There are many places where I thought the grammar or syntax could be improved, mostly in the later scenarios. In the introduction, the use of dashes annoyed me but overall the setup was good. The dialogue in the scenario itself was great.<br> <br> (5) What were your major challenges in meeting the objectives of the scenario?<br> Nothing really, it's pretty straightforward.<br> <br> (6) How fun do you think the scenario is? (1-10)<br> 9<br> It's pretty simple, but I like the level design. A great starting scenario.<br> <br> (7) What, if any, are changes you would have made to the scenario to make it more fun?<br> Nothing<br> <br> (8) Was there any event that caused you to lose the game and forced you to reload or restart the scenario?<br> No. No reloads in this campaign and no restarts in this scenario. Although to be fair, I played through the first several scenarios of this campaign when I was new to Wesnoth.<br> <br> (9) If you know a bit of the Wesnoth Markup Language - do you think that the WML of this scenario is clear and well commented? Brought two wolf riders down the west side to get villages; their cavalry went north, so I came behind them and took the villages, then swung north to flank them. Meanwhile after recruiting one keep full of troops I moved Kapou'e to the center keep, and used a bunch of grunts to block attacks for archers. Finished the scenario with 39 xp on Kapou'e, a wolf rider pillager, an orcish warrior, and an orcish crossbowman.<br> <br> 6. 6. The leader rush tactic is fun, and the scenario is good for getting some starting xp.<br> <br> 7. None, it's a first scenario, it doesn't need to be crazy.<br> <br> 8. I like how this campaign gives orcs more depth than they have in other campaigns, and explores their motivations. I also like how when Kapoue encourages his troops, he always says 'grunts' specifically rather than a more inclusive term like 'orcs' or 'warriors', which I think is a nice subtle reminder of how goblins are marginalized in orc society and how that would show up in the ways orcs talk to each other.<br> <br> (5) What were your major challenges in meeting the objectives of the scenario?<br> I had to restart a few times because I got in too much of a hurry and tried to press my advantage during the second day. Retreating back to my keep and waiting for the second night was better. I also overrecruited wolf riders in the first playthroughs. <br> <br> (6) How fun do you think the scenario is? (1-10)<br> 6. Solid first scenario. Gets you used to the dynamics of the faction, presents some interesting decisions, builds the characters. Maybe a little too simple, though. <br> <br> (7) What, if any, are changes you would have made to the scenario to make it more fun?<br> The way the map is set up, 90% of the fighting happens in flat terrain below the middle keep. Since we're depicting orcs being invaded by humans, I think it would be better if the map were mostly hills/mountains, with maybe some narrow 'roads' of flat terrain running through them. That would give more flavor to the orc 'home field advantage', and it would match the intro dialogue about 'humans took the orc territory and pushed them into barren hills', etc. As it is, there are lots of hills to the north, but it doesn't make sense to just sit around and wait for the humans to come to you there. More hills/mountains throughout the map would also allow you to give the enemy more gold/units, because the cavalry and heavy infantry would be hampered by the terrain, and that would make the player focus more on superior orc mobility in hills, guerilla tactics, etc. <br> I think it would also be better if the enemy keep was in the bottom center of the map, rather than bottom right corner. As it is, because both the middle keep and the enemy keep are on the right side of the map, it funnels 90% of the fighting into a narrow lane between the central lake and the eastern forests. The entire left side of the map is just used for one wolf rider to casually gather villages unopposed. If the enemy keep was moved into the center south of the lake, then the AI would probably split its forces more evenly to the right and left of the lake, and that would lead to more interesting tactical decisions for the player. <br> <br> (8) Was there any event that caused you to lose the game and forced you to reload or restart the scenario?<br> I did very well during the first night and then tried to push toward the enemy keep in the second day, and lost too many units to finish. I played on Easy, but with the caveat that I would never reload no matter how unkind the RNG was to me. <br> <br> (2) 3. This is good; the first level of a campaign should be easy, and help acquaint the player with his recruitment options. As for myself, I don’t have much experience playing as orcs, so this campaign forced me to learn a play style that’s a little bit different compared to what I’m used to. <br> <br> (3) Kill the leader. Very straightforward.<br> <br> (4) It does a decent job of setting up the main character and his background. <br> <br> (5) You start in the north, but there’s a smaller keep towards the center of the map. Pretty much the only tactical decision I found myself pondering was if I should move my leader to the central keep or not. Doing so means you won’t be able to recruit as many units per turn, but you’ll be closer to the enemy leader so it will be easier to keep up the pressure. Ultimately, I did decide to move to the central keep and it worked out.<br> <br> (6) 5. Your recruitment options are very limited so there’s not much tactical depth to this level. Kill-the-enemy-leader mission objectives are extremely common in Wesnoth, so the only novelty factor was in getting used to the orcish units (if one is not used to playing as orcs). On the upside, the level is pretty small and it will be over pretty quickly.<br> <br> (7) I think it’s OK for the first level of a campaign. But if the devs wanted to pique the interest of new players, pretty much anything that gets away from the overused “kill the enemy leader” gameplay would be good. In fact, I think that maybe levels 1 and 2 could be merged since they are the same map and have the same narrative purpose. <br> <br> One random idea: The orcs see a huge human army coming and know they can’t beat it, so they decide to flee. But to prevent pursuit, and as an act of spite (because they’re orcish), they decide to burn down their villages to deny them to the enemy as part of a scorched earth strategy. You know how on the first level of <strong class="text-strong">Heir to the Throne</strong> when the orcs capture one of Konrad’s villages they burn it to the ground? You could do the same thing with a mission objective of “destroy x villages to win.” The player would start on the central keep with a lot of gold but only two recruiting slots, and every turn a few human level 1 units would show up at the southern edge of the map (the vanguard of the human army has not arrived yet). So, it would still be a short, easy first level, but with a distinctly orcish twist. <br> <br> Or you could instead make the map bigger by adding a southern area. Alber shows up in his usual place with an advance force and starts recruiting level 1s as normal, and the goblin wolf rider from level 2 shows up with a warning that his village is under attack by an overwhelming force and a suggestion to use scorched earth tactics. So further to the south in the new expanded part of the map, Lanbec’h shows up and starts recruiting level 3s, which he will use to an attack a friendly tribe of level 0 goblins. Watching his goblin allies get massacred in the first few turns, this will do a good job of demonstrating to the player that #1 the humans are very tough and #2 that the proposed scorched earth policy is warranted and #3 that they need to hurry before the level 3s from the south arrive up north where Kapou’e’s keep is. So the level objective might be to kill Alber to win OR to burn down x villages to win.
