This region was known for its rugged terrain and strategic importance. It was a place of refuge and strength for the Israelites, often serving as a natural defense against enemies. The hill country of Judah is frequently mentioned in the Old Testament, highlighting its importance in the history of Israel. It was also the area where David would later find refuge from King Saul, emphasizing its role as a place of safety and divine provision.
Shamir:
Shamir is one of the towns allotted to the tribe of Judah. Its exact location is uncertain today, but it is believed to have been situated in the southern part of the hill country. The name Shamir means "thorn" or "sharp," which could indicate the nature of the terrain or the characteristics of the settlement. In biblical times, names often held significant meaning, reflecting either the physical attributes of a place or its spiritual significance. Shamir's mention here underscores the detailed record of the land distribution among the tribes of Israel, fulfilling God's promise to Abraham regarding the land.
Jattir:
Jattir was another town in the hill country of Judah. It is identified with modern-day Khirbet Attir, located southwest of Hebron. Jattir was given to the Levites, specifically the descendants of Aaron, as one of their cities with pasturelands (Joshua 21:14). This allocation highlights the provision for the priestly tribe within the land of Judah, ensuring they had places to live and serve. The Levites' presence in Jattir and other towns facilitated the spiritual leadership and religious practices among the Israelites, maintaining the covenant relationship with God.
Socoh:
Socoh, also spelled Soco or Socho, was a town in the hill country of Judah. It is identified with the modern site of Khirbet Shuweikeh. Socoh is mentioned in other parts of the Bible, notably in the account of David and Goliath, where the Philistines camped between Socoh and Azekah (1 Samuel 17:1). This location's mention in the context of a significant biblical event underscores its strategic importance. Socoh's inclusion in the list of towns allotted to Judah reflects the comprehensive nature of the land distribution and the fulfillment of God's promises to the Israelites.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Shamir
A town located in the hill country of Judah. It extends northwards from near Debir to Jerusalem, attaining at Hebron a height of about 2,700 feet. The physical characteristics of the country are vividly described in Deuteronomy 8:7, 8. Dean Stanley ('Sinai and Palestine,' p. 100) descants on the home-like character of the scenery and vegetation to an Englishman, and remarks on the contrast between the life, activity, and industry displayed there, as contrasted with the desolation of the greater part of Palestine. A later traveller, who would not, of course, be so struck with the resemblance to English scenery, speaks of the fertility of the ground as a matter of possibility, rather than of fact. The rocky soil, when broken up by the combined influences of heat, rain, and frost, is, like the soil of other rocky districts, extremely susceptible of cultivation when laid out in terraces. He remarks how the signs of ancient cultivation in this manner are to be seen on all sides, and laments the misrule which has converted the "land flowing with milk and honey" into a wilderness (see Bartlett, 'Egypt and Palestine,' ch. 19, and note on Joshua 10:40). The time has not yet come for the Jews, now asserting their ancient greatness in statesmanship, literature, and art in every country in the civilised world, to return to their own land. Not till then, it is to be feared, will the prophecy in Isaiah 35. be fulfilled, and "the desert rejoice, and the wilderness blossom as the rose, while waters break out in the wilderness and streams in the desert, the parched ground becoming a pool, and the thirsty land springs of water."

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
[These were] in the hill country:
וּבָהָ֑ר (ū·ḇā·hār)
Conjunctive waw, Preposition-b, Article | Noun - masculine singular
Strong's 2022: Mountain, hill, hill country

Shamir,
שָׁמִ֥יר (šā·mîr)
Noun - proper - feminine singular
Strong's 8069: Shamir -- a city in Judah, also a city in Ephraim

Jattir,
וְיַתִּ֖יר (wə·yat·tîr)
Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - feminine singular
Strong's 3492: Jattir -- a city in Judah

Socoh,
וְשׂוֹכֹֽה׃ (wə·śō·w·ḵōh)
Conjunctive waw | Noun - proper - feminine singular
Strong's 7755: Socoh -- two places in Judah

Links
Joshua 15:48 NIV
Joshua 15:48 NLT
Joshua 15:48 ESV
Joshua 15:48 NASB
Joshua 15:48 KJV

Joshua 15:48 BibleApps.com
Joshua 15:48 Biblia Paralela
Joshua 15:48 Chinese Bible
Joshua 15:48 French Bible
Joshua 15:48 Catholic Bible

OT History: Joshua 15:48 In the hill country Shamir Jattir Socoh (Josh.
