personality characteristics of both partners has a long history. The association between relationship quality and personality traits has been previously demonstrated. Personality traits are most commonly assessed using the Five-Factor Model. The present study has focused on Cloninger's psychobiological model of personality that accounts for dimensions of both temperament and character. The goal of this study was to examine the actor and partner effect of couple's personality on relationship outcomes. In total, 184 heterosexual couples completed the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) and the Dyadic Adjustment Scale. The analysis was based on Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM) using multilevel modeling (MLwiN). Results showed that character dimensions Self-Directedness and Cooperativeness had a statistically meaningful actor and partner effect on both partner's relationship quality. However, male's personality temperament dimension Reward Dependence had an only actor effect on his relationship quality. The findings contribute to the literature by highlighting the role of character dimensions of personality in romantic relationships. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=APIM%20%28actor-partner%20interdependence%20model%29" title="APIM (actor-partner interdependence model)">APIM (actor-partner interdependence model)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MLwiN" title=" MLwiN"> MLwiN</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=personality" title=" personality"> personality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=relationship%20quality" title=" relationship quality"> relationship quality</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/50712/temperament-and-character-dimensions-as-personality-predictors-of-relationship-quality-an-actor-partner-interdependence-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/50712.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">414</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">23</span> True Detective as a Southern Gothic: A Study of Its Music-Lyrics</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Divya%20Sharma">Divya Sharma</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nic Pizzolatto’s True Detective offers profound mythological and philosophical ramblings for audiences with literary sensibilities. After all, the virus variants attacked different organs in our body during the infections. During our tests, we used a traditional lactate step test, the results of which were compared with the values before the infection. In the tests, it has been proven that different virus variants show unique lactate curves. In this way, based on the lactate curve, it is possible to identify which variant caused the disease. Thanks to this, it has been shorten the return time, because we can apply the best return protocol after infection to the competitors. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=COVID-Sars19" title="COVID-Sars19">COVID-Sars19</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lactate" title=" lactate"> lactate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=virus%20mutation" title=" virus mutation"> virus mutation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lactate%20profile" title=" lactate profile"> lactate profile</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/171056/identification-of-covid-sars-variants-based-on-lactate-test-results" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/171056.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">66</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">21</span> Evaluation of Interspecific Pollination of Elaeis guineensis and Elaeis oleifera Carried Out in the Ucayali Region-Peru</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Victor%20Sotero">Victor Sotero</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cindy%20Castro"> Cindy Castro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ena%20Velazco"> Ena Velazco</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ursula%20Monteiro"> Ursula Monteiro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dora%20Garcia"> Dora Garcia</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The aim of this study is to carry out the evaluation of the artificial pollination of the female flowers of E. oleifera with pollen of E. guineensis, to obtain the hybrid Palma OXG, which presents two characteristics of interest, such as high resistance to the disease of spear rot and high concentration of oleic acid. Relying on the conation theory, this study investigates this phenomenon and proposes solutions to mitigate the issue. We show that highly experienced e-Forum members refuse to share business information in a peer to peer information exchange forums. However, forums managers can mitigate this behavior by developing a sentiment of belongingness to the network. Furthermore, by selecting only elite forum participants with ample experience, they can reduce the reluctance of key information providers to engage in information exchange. Our hypotheses are tested with PLS structural equations modeling using survey data from members of a French e-Forum dedicated to the exchange of business information about exporting. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=conation" title="conation">conation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-Forum" title=" e-Forum"> e-Forum</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=information%20exchange" title=" information exchange"> information exchange</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=members%20participation" title=" members participation"> members participation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113851/mitigating-the-unwillingness-of-e-forums-members-to-engage-in-information-exchange" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113851.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">158</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">19</span> Framework for Assessment of Non-financial Concentration Risk</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anchal%20Gupta">Anchal Gupta</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Amid the escalating digitalization and deployment of cross-border technological solutions, a significant portion of the industry and regulatory bodies have begun to pose queries concerning the formulation, computation, and contemplation of concentration risk. In the financial sector, well-established parameters exist for gauging the concentration of a portfolio and similar elements. However, a unified framework appears to be absent, which could guide industry and regulators pertaining to non-financial concentration risk. This paper introduces a framework, constructed on the foundation of multiple regulations where regulators are advocating for licensed corporations to evaluate their concentration risk. The lacuna lies in the fact that, while regulators delineate what constitutes concentration risk, unlike other domains, no guidelines are provided that could assist firms. This frequently results in ambiguity and individual corporate interpretation, which, from a risk management standpoint, is less than ideal. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=concentration%20risk" title="concentration risk">concentration risk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-financial%20risk" title=" non-financial risk"> non-financial risk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=government%20regulation" title=" government regulation"> government regulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=financial%20regulation" title=" financial regulation"> financial regulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non-market%20risk" title=" non-market risk"> non-market risk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MAS" title=" MAS"> MAS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=DORA" title=" DORA"> DORA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EDSP" title=" EDSP"> EDSP</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SFC" title=" SFC"> SFC</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/186622/framework-for-assessment-of-non-financial-concentration-risk" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/186622.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">40</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">18</span> Elucidation of the Photoreactivity of 2-Hydroxychalcones and the Effect of Continuous Photoflow Method on the Photoreactivity</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sobiya%20George">Sobiya George</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anna%20Dora%20Gudmundsdottir"> Anna Dora Gudmundsdottir</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The 2-hydroxychalcones form an important group of organic compounds not only because of their pharmacological properties but also because they are intermediates in the biosynthesis of flavanones. We studied the photoreactivity of 2-hydroxychalcone derivatives in aprotic solvent acetonitrile and found that their photochemistry is concentration-dependent. Irradiation of 2-hydroxychalcone derivatives with 365 nm light emitting diode (LED) in dilute concentration selectively forms flavanones, whereas, at higher concentrations, an additional photoproduct is observed. However, the application of the continuous photo-flow method resulted in the selective formation of flavanones even at higher concentrations. To understand the reaction mechanism and explain the concentration-dependent photoreactivity of 2-hydroxychalcones, we preformed trapping studies with tris(trimethylsilyl)silane, nanosecond laser flash photolysis, and time dependent-density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flavanones" title="flavanones">flavanones</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydroxychalcones" title=" hydroxychalcones"> hydroxychalcones</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=laser%20flash%20photolysis" title=" laser flash photolysis"> laser flash photolysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=TD-DFT%20calculations" title=" TD-DFT calculations"> TD-DFT calculations</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/125039/elucidation-of-the-photoreactivity-of-2-hydroxychalcones-and-the-effect-of-continuous-photoflow-method-on-the-photoreactivity" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/125039.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">149</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">17</span> Human Resources Management Practices in Hospitality Companies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dora%20Martins">Dora Martins</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Susana%20Silva"> Susana Silva</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=C%C3%A2ndida%20Silva"> Cândida Silva</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Human Resources Management (HRM) has been recognized by academics and practitioners as an important element in organizations. Therefore, this paper explores the best practices of HRM and seeks to understand the level of participation in the development of these practices by human resources managers in the hospitality industry and compare it with other industries. Thus, the study compared the HRM practices of companies in the hospitality sector with HRM practices of companies in other sectors, and identifies the main differences between their HRM practices. The results show that the most frequent HRM practices in all companies, independently of its sector of activity, are hiring and training. When comparing hospitality sector with other sectors of activity, some differences were noticed, namely in the adoption of the practices of communication and information sharing, and of recruitment and selection. According to these results, the paper discusses the major theoretical and practical implications. Suggestions for future research are also presented. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=exploratory%20study" title="exploratory study">exploratory study</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20resources%20management%20practices" title=" human resources management practices"> human resources management practices</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20resources%20manager" title=" human resources manager"> human resources manager</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hospitality%20companies" title=" hospitality companies"> hospitality companies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Portuguese%20companies" title=" Portuguese companies"> Portuguese companies</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/68260/human-resources-management-practices-in-hospitality-companies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/68260.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">482</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">16</span> Dimensions of Guest Experience in Themed Hotels </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katalin%20Juhasz-Dora">Katalin Juhasz-Dora</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Several studies have shown that physical environments, milieu, atmosphere and service space play a significant role in the consumer experience. Study was conducted to investigate the histopathological features of different onion tissues infected with Fusarium equiseti by inoculation with soil drench, root dip and mycelia paste methods. This was carried out by fixation, dehydration, clearing, wax embedding, sectioning, staining and mounting of leaf and root sections for microscopical examination at 400x. Once infection occurred in the roots, the pathogen moved through the vascular system to colonize the whole plant. At first, it grew in the intercellular spaces of the root cortex but soon invaded the cells, followed by colonization of the cells by its hyphae and microconidia. At later stages of infection, the cortex tissue became completely disorganized and decomposed as the pathogen advance to the shoot system via the vessel elements; this may be responsible for the early wilting symptom of infected plants arising from the severe water stress due to blockage of the xylem tissues. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=onion" title="onion">onion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=histopathology" title=" histopathology"> histopathology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=infection" title=" infection"> infection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fusaria" title=" fusaria"> fusaria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=inoculation" title=" inoculation"> inoculation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/68354/histopathological-features-of-infections-caused-by-fusarium-equiseti-mart-sacc-in-onion-plants-from-kebbi-state-northern-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/68354.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">278</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">13</span> Ontology for Cross-Site-Scripting (XSS) Attack in Cybersecurity</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jean%20Rosemond%20Dora">Jean Rosemond Dora</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karol%20Nemoga"> Karol Nemoga</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this work, we tackle a frequent problem that frequently occurs in the cybersecurity field which is the exploitation of websites by XSS attacks, which are nowadays considered a complicated attack. These types of attacks aim to execute malicious scripts in a web browser of the client by including code in a legitimate web page. A serious matter is when a website accepts the “user-input” option. Attackers can exploit the web application (if vulnerable), and then steal sensitive data (session cookies, passwords, credit cards, etc.) from the server and/or from the client. However, the difficulty of the exploitation varies from website to website. Our focus is on the usage of ontology in cybersecurity against XSS attacks, on the importance of the ontology, and its core meaning for cybersecurity. We explain how a vulnerable website can be exploited, and how different JavaScript payloads can be used to detect vulnerabilities. We also enumerate some tools to use for an efficient analysis. We present detailed reasoning on what can be done to improve the security of a website in order to resist attacks, and we provide supportive examples. Then, we apply an ontology model against XSS attacks to strengthen the protection of a web application. However, we note that the existence of ontology does not improve the security itself, but it has to be properly used and should require a maximum of security layers to be taken into account. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cybersecurity" title="cybersecurity">cybersecurity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=web%20application%20vulnerabilities" title=" web application vulnerabilities"> web application vulnerabilities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cyber%20threats" title=" cyber threats"> cyber threats</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ontology%20model" title=" ontology model"> ontology model</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146344/ontology-for-cross-site-scripting-xss-attack-in-cybersecurity" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/146344.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">172</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">12</span> Using Sandplay Therapy to Assess Psychological Resilience</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dan%20Wang">Dan Wang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Sandplay therapy is a Jungian psychological therapy developed by Dora Kalff in 1956. In sandplay therapy, the client first makes a sandtray with various miniatures and then has a communication with the therapist based on the sandtray. The special method makes sandplay therapy has great assessment potential. With regarding that the core treatment hypothesis of sandplay therapy - the self-healing power, is very similar to resilience. This study tries to use sandplay to evaluate psychological resilience. Participants are 107 undergraduates recruited from three public universities in China who were required to make an initial sandtray and to complete the Ego-Resiliency Scale (ER89) respectively. First, a 28- category General Sandtray Coding Manual (GSCM) was developed based on literature on sandplay therapy. Next, using GSCM to code the 107 initial sandtrays and conducted correlation analysis and regression analysis between all GSCM categories and ER89. Results show three categories (i.e., vitality, water types, and relationships) of sandplay account for 36.6% of the variance of ego-resilience and form the four-point Likert-type Sandtray Projective Test of Resilience (SPTR). Finally, it is found that SPTR dimensions and total score all have good inter-rater reliability, ranging from 0.89 to 0.93. This study provides an alternative approach to measure psychological resilience and can help to guide clinical social work. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sandplay%20therapy" title="sandplay therapy">sandplay therapy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=psychological%20resilience" title=" psychological resilience"> psychological resilience</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=measurement" title=" measurement"> measurement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=college%20students" title=" college students"> college students</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/82105/using-sandplay-therapy-to-assess-psychological-resilience" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/82105.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">255</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">11</span> Binder-Free Porous Photocathode Based on Cuprous Oxide for High-Performing P-Type Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marinela%20Miclau">Marinela Miclau</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Melinda%20Vajda"> Melinda Vajda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nicolae%20Miclau"> Nicolae Miclau</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniel%20Ursu"> Daniel Ursu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Characterized by a simple structure, easy and low cost fabrication, the dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) attracted the interest of the scientific community as an attractive alternative of conventional Si-based solar cells and thin-film solar cells. Over the past 20 years, the main efforts have attempted to enhance the efficiency of n-type DSSCs, the highest efficiency record of 14.30% was achieved using the co-sensitization of two metal-free organic dyes and Co (II/III) tris(phenanthroline)-based redox electrolyte. In the last years, the development of the efficient p-type DSSC has become a research focus owing to the fact that the concept of tandem solar cell was proposed as the solution to increase the power conversion efficiency. A promising alternative for the photocathodes of p-type DSSC, cuprous (Cu2O) and cupric (CuO) oxides have been investigated because of its nontoxic nature, low cost, high natural abundance, a good absorption coefficient for visible light and a higher dielectric constant than NiO. In case of p-type DSSC based on copper oxides with I3-/I- as redox mediator, the highest conversion efficiency of 0.42% (Cu2O) and 0.03% (CuO) has achieved. Towards the increase in the performance, we have fabricated and analyzed the performance of p-type DSSC prepared with the binder-free porous Cu2O photocathodes. Porous thin film could be an attractive alternative for DSSC because of their large surface areas which enable the efficient absorption of the dyes and light. We propose a simple and one-step hydrothermal method for the preparation of porous Cu2O thin film using copper substrate, cupric acetate and ethyl cellulose. The cubic structure of Cu2O has been determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and porous morphology of thin film was emphasized by Scanning Electron Microscope Inspect S (SEM). Optical and Mott-Schottky measurements attest of the high quality of the Cu2O thin film. The binder-free porous Cu2O photocathode has confirmed the excellent photovoltaic properties, the best value reported for p-type DSSC (1%) in similar conditions being reached. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cuprous%20oxide" title="cuprous oxide">cuprous oxide</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dye-sensitized%20solar%20cell" title=" dye-sensitized solar cell"> dye-sensitized solar cell</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hydrothermal%20method" title=" hydrothermal method"> hydrothermal method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=porous%20photocathode" title=" porous photocathode"> porous photocathode</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90659/binder-free-porous-photocathode-based-on-cuprous-oxide-for-high-performing-p-type-dye-sensitized-solar-cells" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90659.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">168</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">10</span> Form-Finding of Tensioned Fabric Structure in Mathematical Monkey Saddle Model</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yee%20Hooi%20Min">Yee Hooi Min</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdul%20Hadi"> Abdul Hadi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M.%20N."> M. Tensioned fabric structures are normally designed to be in the form of equal tensioned surface. Tensioned fabric structure is highly suited to be used for realizing surfaces of complex or new forms. However, research study on a new form as a tensioned fabric structure has not attracted much attention. Another source of inspiration minimal surface which could be adopted as form for tensioned fabric structure is very crucial. The aim of this study is to propose initial equilibrium shape of tensioned fabric structures in the form of Monkey Saddle. Computational form-finding is frequently used to determine the possible form of uniformly stressed surfaces. A tensioned fabric structure must curve equally in opposite directions to give the resulting surface a three dimensional stability. In an anticlastic doubly curved surface, the sum of all positive and all negative curvatures is zero. This study provides an alternative choice for structural designer to consider the Monkey Saddle applied in tensioned fabric structures. The results on factors affecting initial equilibrium shape can serve as a reference for proper selection of surface parameter for achieving a structurally viable surface. Such in-sight will lead to improvement of rural basic infrastructure, economic gains, sustainability of built environment and green technology initiative. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anticlastic" title="anticlastic">anticlastic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=curvatures" title=" curvatures"> curvatures</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=form-finding" title=" form-finding"> form-finding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=initial%20equilibrium%20shape" title=" initial equilibrium shape"> initial equilibrium shape</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=minimal%20surface" title=" minimal surface"> minimal surface</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tensioned%20fabric%20structure" title=" tensioned fabric structure"> tensioned fabric structure</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20781/form-finding-of-tensioned-fabric-structure-in-mathematical-monkey-saddle-model" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20781.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">537</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">9</span> Body Image Impact on Quality of Life and Adolescents’ Binge Eating: The Indirect Role of Body Image Coping Strategies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dora%20Bianchi">Dora Bianchi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anthony%20Schinelli"> Anthony Schinelli</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Maria%20Fatta"> Laura Maria Fatta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Antonia%20Lonigro"> Antonia Lonigro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabio%20Lucidi"> Fabio Lucidi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fiorenzo%20Laghi"> Fiorenzo Laghi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Purpose: The role of body image in adolescent binge eating is widely confirmed, albeit the various facets of this relationship are still mostly unexplored. Within the multidimensional body image framework, this study hypothesized the indirect effects of three body image coping strategies (positive rational acceptance, appearance fixing, avoidance) in the expected relationship between the perceived impact of body image on individuals’ quality of life and binge eating symptoms. Methods: Participants were 715 adolescents aged 15-21 years (49.1% girls) recruited in Italian schools. An anonymous self-report online survey was administered. A multiple mediation model was tested. Results: A more positive perceived impact of body image on quality of life was a negative predictor of adolescents’ binge eating, controlling for individual levels of body satisfaction. Three indirect effects were found in this relationship: on one hand, the positive body image impact reduced binge eating via increasing positive rational acceptance (M1), and via reducing avoidance (M2); on the contrary, the positive body image impact also enhanced binge eating via increasing appearance fixing (M3). Conclusions: The body image impact on quality of life can be alternatively protective—when adaptive coping is solicited, and maladaptive strategies are reduced—or a risk factor, which may increase binge eating by soliciting appearance fixing. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=binge%20eating" title="binge eating">binge eating</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=body%20image%20satisfaction" title=" body image satisfaction"> body image satisfaction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quality%20of%20life" title=" quality of life"> quality of life</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=coping%20strategies" title=" coping strategies"> coping strategies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adolescents" title=" adolescents"> adolescents</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/172611/body-image-impact-on-quality-of-life-and-adolescents-binge-eating-the-indirect-role-of-body-image-coping-strategies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/172611.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">81</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">8</span> Photo-Fenton Degradation of Organic Compounds by Iron(II)-Embedded Composites</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marius%20Sebastian%20Secula">Marius Sebastian Secula</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Andreea%20Vajda"> Andreea Vajda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Benoit%20Cagnon"> Benoit Cagnon</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ioan%20Mamaliga"> Ioan Mamaliga</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> One of the most important classes of pollutants is represented by dyes. The synthetic character and complex molecular structure make them more stable and difficult to be biodegraded in water. The treatment of wastewaters containing dyes in order to separate/degrade dyes is of major importance. Various techniques have been employed to remove and/or degrade dyes in water. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are known as among the most efficient ones towards dye degradation. The aim of this work is to investigate the efficiency of a cheap Iron-impregnated activated carbon Fenton-like catalyst in order to degrade organic compounds in aqueous solutions. In the presented study an anionic dye, Indigo Carmine, is considered as a model pollutant. Various AOPs are evaluated for the degradation of Indigo Carmine to establish the effect of the prepared catalyst. It was found that the Iron(II)-embedded activated carbon composite enhances significantly the degradation process of Indigo Carmine. Using the wet impregnation procedure, 5 g of L27 AC material were contacted with Fe(II) solutions of FeSO4 precursor at a theoretical iron content in the resulted composite of 1 %. The L27 AC was impregnated for 3h at 45°C, then filtered, washed several times with water and ethanol and dried at 55 °C for 24 h. Thermogravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy were employed to investigate the structural, textural, and micromorphology of the catalyst. Total iron content in the obtained composites and iron leakage were determined by spectrophotometric method using phenantroline. Photo-catalytic tests were performed using an UV - Consulting Peschl Laboratory Reactor System. UV light irradiation tests were carried out to determine the performance of the prepared Iron-impregnated composite towards the degradation of Indigo Carmine in aqueous solution using different conditions (17 W UV lamps, with and without in-situ generation of O3; different concentrations of H2O2, different initial concentrations of Indigo Carmine, different values of pH, different doses of NH4-OH enhancer). The photocatalytic tests were performed after the adsorption equilibrium has been established. The obtained results emphasize an enhancement of Indigo Carmine degradation in case of the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process conducted with an O3 generating UV lamp in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. The investigated process obeys the pseudo-first order kinetics. The photo-Fenton degradation of IC was tested at different values of initial concentration. The obtained results emphasize an enhancement of Indigo Carmine degradation in case of the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process conducted with an O3 generating UV lamp in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Within the different ways of supplying heat to cancer cells and achieve their destruction or damage, the use of magnetic nanoparticles has attracted attention due to the capability of these particles to generate heat under the influence of an external magnetic field. In addition, these nanoparticles have a high surface area and sizes similar or even lower than biological entities, which allow their approaching and interaction with a specific region of interest. The most used magnetic nanoparticles for hyperthermia treatment are those based on iron oxides, mainly magnetite and maghemite, due to their biocompatibility, good magnetic properties and chemical stability. However, in order to fulfill more efficiently the requirements that demand the treatment of magnetic hyperthermia, there have been investigations using ferrites that incorporate different metallic ions, such as Mg, Mn, Co, Ca, Ni, Cu, Li, Gd, etc., in their structure. This paper reports the synthesis of nanosized MgxMn1-xFe2O4 (x = 0.3 and 0.4) ferrites by sol-gel method and their evaluation in terms of heating capability and <em>in vitro</em> hemolysis to determine the potential use of these nanoparticles as thermoseeds for the treatment of cancer by magnetic hyperthermia. It was possible to obtain ferrites with nanometric sizes, a single crystalline phase with an inverse spinel structure and a behavior near to that of superparamagnetic materials. Additionally, at concentrations of 10 mg of magnetic material per mL of water, it was possible to reach a temperature of approximately 45&deg;C, which is within the range of temperatures used for the treatment of hyperthermia. The results of the <em>in vitro</em> hemolysis assay showed that, at the concentrations tested, these nanoparticles are non-hemolytic, as their percentage of hemolysis is close to zero. Therefore, these materials can be used as thermoseeds for the treatment of cancer by magnetic hyperthermia. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ferrites" title="ferrites">ferrites</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=heating%20capability" title=" heating capability"> heating capability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hemolysis" title=" hemolysis"> hemolysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nanoparticles" title=" nanoparticles"> nanoparticles</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sol-gel" title=" sol-gel"> sol-gel</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65208/evaluation-of-the-heating-capability-and-in-vitro-hemolysis-of-nanosized-mgxmn1-xfe2o4-x-03-and-04-ferrites-prepared-by-sol-gel-method" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65208.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">342</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Atomic Layer Deposition Of Metal Oxide Inverse Opals: A Promising Strategy For Photocatalytic Applications</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hamsasew%20Hankebo%20Lemago">Hamsasew Hankebo Lemago</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=D%C3%B3ra%20Hessz"> Dóra Hessz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tam%C3%A1s%20Igricz"> Tamás Igricz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zolt%C3%A1n%20Erd%C3%A9lyi"> Zoltán Erdélyi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q="></a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Imre%20Mikl%C3%B3s%20Szil%C3%A1gyi">Imre Miklós Szilágyi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Metal oxide inverse opals are a promising class of photocatalysts with a unique hierarchical structure. The central place throughout history was occupied by the central part - Split-Dalmatia County, with its center in Antica in Salona and later in Split. Nowadays, in addition to its traffic and economic importance, this area is also important for tourism, an area where Croatia develops its economy and realizing its economic growth. Nautical tourism is the most important form of the tourist economic sector that uses the geographical features of the Croatian Adriatic water area and achieves the greatest growth based on tour-ist trends in the world (coronavirus - separation from the masses, adventure tourism - own arrangements) and thus opens up the possibility of develop-ment for other parts of the tourist economy. This will be described in the ex-ample of the business of the Split-Dalmatia County shipping company from Krilo Jesenice, which operates as a mini-cruising service provider, the lead-ing form of cruising in Croatia. The advantages that this type of tourism provides to travelers in terms of customized itineraries, high-quality services, an intimate atmosphere, and a unique experience through familiarization with local culture and tradition will be considered. Through direct primary research and analysis of available secondary research data, an attempt will be made to show how traditional Croatian mini cruisers manage to stand out in a competitive tourist environment. Their impact on the local economy, sus-tainability, and environmental protection will be considered, as well as how they are integrated into the tourist offer of other destinations in Croatia. In addition, the challenges and opportunities that arise in the maintenance and development of traditional Croatian mini cruisers will be discussed, includ-ing issues such as infrastructure, staff training, and market trends. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=croatia" title="croatia">croatia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adriatic" title=" adriatic"> adriatic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cruising" title=" cruising"> cruising</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nautical%20tourism" title=" nautical tourism"> nautical tourism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mini%20cruise" title=" mini cruise"> mini cruise</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170069/the-spatial-potential-of-the-croatian-adriatic-area-for-the-development-of-an-indigenous-form-of-cruising-tourism-mini-croatian-cruiser" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170069.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">65</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> The Examination of Parents’ Perceptions and Motivations Regarding Type 1 Diabetes Management Technologies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Dora%20Horvath">Maria Dora Horvath</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Norbert%20Buzas"> Norbert Buzas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zsanett%20Tesch"> Zsanett Tesch</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Diabetes management poses many unique challenges for children and their parents. The use of a diabetes management device should not be one of these challenges as the purpose of these devices is to make the management more convenient. The objective of our study was to examine how demographical, psychological and diabetes-related factors determine the choices parents make regarding their child’s diabetes management technologies and how they perceive advanced devices. We conducted the study using an online questionnaire with 318 parents (mostly mothers). The questions of the survey were about demographical, diabetes-related and psychological factors (diabetes management problems, diabetes management competence). In addition, we asked the parents opinions about advanced diabetes management devices. We expanded our data with semi-structured in-depth interviews. 61 % of the participants Self-Monitored Blood Glucose (SMBG), and 39 % used a Continuous Glucose Monitoring System (CGM). Considering insulin administration, 58 % used Multiple Daily Insulin Injections (MDII) and 42 % used Continuous Subcutaneous Insulin Infusion (CSII). Parents who used diverse combinations of diabetes management devices showed significant differences in age (parents’ and child’s), the monthly cost of diabetes, the duration of diabetes, the highest level of education and average monthly household income. CGM users perceived diabetes management problems significantly more severe than SMBG users and CSII users felt significantly more competent in diabetes management than MDII users. Avoiding CGM use due to lack of financial resources was determined by diagnosis duration. While avoiding its use by the cause of the child rejecting, it was determined by the child’s age and diabetes competence. Using MDII instead of CSII because of the child’s rejection was determined by the monthly cost of diabetes and child’s age. We conducted a complex empirical study in which we examined perceptions and experiences of advanced and less advanced diabetes management technologies comprehensively. Our study highlights the factors that fundamentally influence parents’ motivations and choices about diabetes management technologies. These results could contribute to developing diabetes management technologies more suitable for children living with type 1 diabetes and their parents. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=advanced%20diabetes%20management%20technologies" title="advanced diabetes management technologies">advanced diabetes management technologies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=children%20living%20with%20type%201%20diabetes" title=" children living with type 1 diabetes"> children living with type 1 diabetes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diabetes%20management" title=" diabetes management"> diabetes management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=motivation" title=" motivation"> motivation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parents" title=" parents"> parents</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/120015/the-examination-of-parents-perceptions-and-motivations-regarding-type-1-diabetes-management-technologies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/120015.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">135</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Soft Skills: Expectations and Needs in Tourism</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Susana%20Silva">Susana Silva</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dora%20Martins"> Dora Martins</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The recent political, economic, social technological and employment changes significantly affect the tourism organizations and consequently the changing nature of the employment experience of the tourism workforce. Such scene leads several researchers and labor analysts to reflect about what kinds of jobs, knowledge and competences are need to ensure the success to teach, to learning and to work on this sector. In recent years the competency-based approach in high education level has become of significant interest. On the one hand, this approach could leads to the forming of the key students’ competences which contribute their better preparation to the professional future and on the other hand could answer better to practical demands from tourism job market. The goals of this paper are (1) to understand the expectations of university tourism students in relation to the present and future tourism competences demands, (2) to identify the importance put on the soft skills, (3) to know the importance of high qualification to their future professional activity and (4) to explore the students perception about present and future tourist sector specificities. To this proposal, a questionnaire was designed and distributed to every students who participate on classes of Hospitality Management under degree and master from one public Portuguese university. All participants were invited, during December 2014 and September 2015, to answer the questionnaire at the moment and on presence of one researcher of this study. Fulfilled the questionnaire 202 students (72, 35,6% male and 130, 64.4% female), the mean age was 21,64 (SD=5,27), 91% (n=86) were undergraduate and 18 (9%) were master students. 80% (n=162) of our participants refers as a possibility to look for a job outside the country.42% (n=85) prefers to work in a medium-sized tourism units (with 50-249 employees). According to our participants the most valued skills in tourism are the domain of foreign languages (87.6%, n=177), the ability to work as a team (85%), the personal persistence (83%, n=168), the knowledge of the product/services provided (73.8%, n=149), and assertiveness (66.3%, n=134). 65% (n=131) refers the availability to look for a job in a home distance of 1000 kilometers and 59% (n=119) do not consider the possibility to work in another area than tourism. From the results of this study we are in the position of confirming the need for universities to maintain a better link with the professional tourism companies and to rethink some competences into their learning course model. Based on our results students, universities and companies could understand more deeply the motivations, expectations and competences need to build the future career who study and work on the tourism sector. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20capital" title="human capital">human capital</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=employability" title=" employability"> employability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=students%E2%80%99%20competencies%20perceptions" title=" students’ competencies perceptions"> students’ competencies perceptions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soft%20skills" title=" soft skills"> soft skills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tourism" title=" tourism "> tourism </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40267/soft-skills-expectations-and-needs-in-tourism" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/40267.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">271</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Atomic Layer Deposition of Metal Oxide Inverse Opals: A Tailorable Platform for Unprecedented Photocatalytic Performance</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hamsasew%20Hankebo%20Lemago">Hamsasew Hankebo Lemago</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=D%C3%B3ra%20Hessz"> Dóra Hessz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zolt%C3%A1n%20Erd%C3%A9lyi"> Zoltán Erdélyi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Imre%20Mikl%C3%B3s%20Szil%C3%A1gyi"> Imre Miklós Szilágyi</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Metal oxide inverse opals are a unique class of photocatalysts with a hierarchical structure that mimics the natural opal gemstone. Haematoma formation causes progressive airway obstruction, necessitating emergency bedside haematoma evacuation in up to ¼ of patients. ENT UK, BAETS and DAS have developed consensus guidelines to improve perioperative care, recommending that all healthcare staff interacting with patients undergoing thyroid surgery should be trained in managing post-thyroidectomy haematoma. The aim was to assess the effectiveness of a hybrid simulation model in improving clinician’s confidence in dealing with this surgical emergency. A hybrid simulation was designed, consisting of a standardised patient wearing a part-task trainer to mimic a post-thyroidectomy haematoma in a real patient. The part-task trainer was an adapted C-spine collar with layers of silicone representing the skin and strap muscles and thickened jelly representing the haematoma. Both the skin and strap muscle layers had to be opened in order to evacuate the haematoma. Boxes have been implemented into the appropriate post operative areas (recovery and surgical wards), which contain a printed algorithm designed to assist in remembering a sequence of steps for haematoma evacuation using the ‘SCOOP’ method (skin exposure, cut sutures, open skin, open muscles, pack wound) along with all the necessary equipment to open the front of the neck. Small-group teaching sessions were delivered by ENT and anaesthetic trainees to members of the multidisciplinary team normally involved in perioperative patient care, which included ENT surgeons, anaesthetists, recovery nurses, HCAs and ODPs. The DESATS acronym of signs and symptoms to recognise (difficulty swallowing, EWS score, swelling, anxiety, tachycardia, stridor) was highlighted. Then participants took part in the hybrid simulation in order to practice this ‘SCOOP’ method of haematoma evacuation. Participants were surveyed using a Likert scale to assess their level of confidence pre- and post teaching session. 30 clinicians took part. Confidence (agreed/strongly agreed) in recognition of post thyroidectomy haematoma improved from 58.6% to 96.5%. Confidence in management improved from 27.5% to 89.7%.
