The Passover commemorates their deliverance from Egypt, and this is the first Passover celebrated in the Promised Land. It signifies the end of their wilderness journey and the beginning of a new chapter. The timing underscores God's faithfulness in fulfilling His promise to bring them into a land flowing with milk and honey (Exodus 3:8). The Passover itself is a type of Christ, as Jesus is referred to as our Passover lamb (1 Corinthians 5:7), symbolizing deliverance from sin.
on that very day
The immediacy of this phrase highlights the importance of the event. It emphasizes the precise fulfillment of God's promises and the Israelites' obedience to His commands. The phrase also suggests a new beginning, as they transition from manna, which sustained them in the wilderness, to the produce of the land. This change marks a shift from God's miraculous provision to His provision through the land He promised.
they ate unleavened bread
Unleavened bread is significant in Jewish tradition, especially during Passover, symbolizing purity and the haste of their departure from Egypt (Exodus 12:39). It represents a break from the past and a readiness to embrace God's future promises. In the New Testament, unleavened bread is associated with sincerity and truth (1 Corinthians 5:8), pointing to the purity required in the lives of believers.
and roasted grain
Roasted grain was a common food in ancient Near Eastern cultures, often prepared by parching the grain over fire. This method of preparation indicates the Israelites' adaptation to the agricultural produce of Canaan. It also signifies their transition from a nomadic lifestyle to one of settlement and cultivation. The consumption of roasted grain fulfills the promise of a land that would sustain them, contrasting with the manna they had eaten for forty years.
from the produce of the land
This phrase underscores the fulfillment of God's promise to give the Israelites a land of abundance (Deuteronomy 8:7-9). It marks the end of their dependence on manna and the beginning of enjoying the fruits of the Promised Land. The produce of the land is a tangible sign of God's provision and faithfulness. It also foreshadows the spiritual nourishment found in Christ, who is the bread of life (John 6:35), providing sustenance for believers.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Joshua
The leader of the Israelites after Moses, who led them into the Promised Land.

2. Israelites
The people of God who were delivered from Egypt and wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.

3. Promised Land (Canaan)
The land promised by God to Abraham and his descendants, which the Israelites are now entering.

4. Passover
A significant Jewish festival commemorating the Israelites' deliverance from Egypt.

5. Unleavened Bread and Roasted Grain
The first produce of the Promised Land that the Israelites consumed, marking a new chapter in their journey.
Teaching Points
God's Faithfulness
The consumption of the land's produce signifies the fulfillment of God's promise to Abraham.
