Post independence, the issue of political identity, has emerged and developed. In the reformation era, the issue of political identity not only caused horizontal conflicts, but also entered political contestation in Regent, Governor and Presidential elections. In 2017 Jakarta Governor Election, the issue of political identity arose in an effort to suppress incumbents. There have also been substantial transition in the pattern of voter mobilization, specifically the increasing prevalence of identity politics. This study showed that each region had a different approach to incorporating identity in electoral politics. This research finds the practice of identity politics running in the 2018 Pilgubsu process, where each candidate uses closeness in ethnicity and religiosity in political practice; campaign until the selected work program.In accordance with the characteristics of the data, the research method used in this study is a qualitative approach with the main focus is to explain the factors that led to the emergence of religious identity politics in multicultural societies in North Sumatra through a democratic process. For research purposes, the method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The results of the study conclude that: Identity politics is politics that basically embraces identity equality to raise the degree of a group due to a sense of unworthiness, this politics has experienced developments that were previously to raise the degree of certain groups into political tools ridden by political elites for personal gain and for gain votes during elections, while Pluralism is a condition of people who can live side by side in a diverse society so that people can live in harmony.
