Help us drive real generational change that lasts.</p>\n\n<p>Code for America is looking for a talented <strong>Data Science Manager</strong> who will:</p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Work alongside cross-functional partners to deliver insights to support continuous improvement of our service offerings</li>\n<li>Support, coach and develop a team of data scientists and an analytics engineer</li>\n<li>Foster an inclusive and equitable working environment where everyone is supported to do their best work</li>\n</ul>\n<h3><strong>About the Role:</strong></h3>\n<p>Code for America’s data scientists use a wide range of statistical and analytical methods to improve user experiences and outcomes across the tax, criminal justice, and safety net services that Code for America delivers. </p>\n\n<p>We are looking for a Data Science Manager who is comfortable in a player-coach role. You will manage and mentor members of the Data Science team and define best practices for conducting research with respect and dignity.</p>\n\n<p>Data Scientists at Code for America are an integral component of all of our program areas and as a Data Science Manager, you will spend time as an individual contributor in one of these program areas. There are currently three program areas at Code for America:</p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Criminal Justice, which focuses on <a href=\"https://codeforamerica.org/programs/criminal-justice/automatic-record-clearance/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Automatic Record Clearance</a>,</li>\n<li>Tax Benefits, which focuses on <a href=\"https://codeforamerica.org/programs/tax-benefits/getyourrefund/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">free trustworthy tax services</a> and <a href=\"https://codeforamerica.org/programs/tax-benefits/child-tax-credit/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">simplified tax filing</a>,</li>\n<li>And the <a href=\"https://codeforamerica.org/programs/social-safety-net/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Social Safety Net</a>. Focus areas in this portfolio include <a href=\"https://codeforamerica.org/programs/social-safety-net/food-benefits/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">food benefits</a>, <a href=\"https://codeforamerica.org/programs/social-safety-net/integrated-benefits/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">integrated benefits applications</a>, and <a href=\"https://codeforamerica.org/programs/social-safety-net/training/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">training & capacity building</a>.</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p>The ideal candidate will have a strong background in data science and analytics, data engineering, and a proven track record in managing a diverse team of data scientists in a matrixed environment.</p>\n\n<p>The Data Science Manager will report to the <strong>Senior Director of Insights</strong>, and there may be up to 20% travel for this role. </p>\n<h3><strong>In this Position You Will:</strong></h3>\n<ul>\n<li><p><strong>Focus on hands-on Data Science work to support Code for America's portfolios by:</strong></p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Conducting descriptive data analysis using case, survey, and event data to identify and size problems. Collaborating with cross-functional partners to identify potential improvements</li>\n<li>Developing and implementing key metrics to measure the effectiveness and impact of our products and services</li>\n<li>When appropriate, applying AI/ML techniques in collaboration with cross-functional teams to improve the delivery of products and services</li>\n</ul></li>\n<li><p><strong>Manage a team by:</strong></p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Directly managing 3-5 reports</li>\n<li>Holding regular 1:1s with each member of the team to coach and mentor towards established goals</li>\n<li>Performing regular check-ins with each member of the team to ensure alignment on expectations around job performance and growth</li>\n<li>Creating growth opportunities for reports to practice key technical and professional skills</li>\n<li>Advising the Senior Director on direct report health and future goals for appropriate team rotations and staffing</li>\n</ul></li>\n<li><p><strong>Serve as a leader by:</strong></p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>Fostering a dynamic and equity-centered data science culture</li>\n<li>Developing our team operations and rituals</li>\n<li>Partnering cross-functionally to ensure Data Science is being leveraged to improve products, services, and client outcomes across our portfolios</li>\n</ul></li>\n<li><p><strong>Other duties as assigned</strong></p></li>\n</ul>\n<h3><strong>About You:</strong></h3>\n<p>This position is a perfect fit for a compassionate data science leader who excels at balancing empathy with productivity, especially someone driven by a deep commitment to making it easier for people to access social safety net benefits. If you are passionate about leading a team to deliver impactful solutions while fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment, this role aligns perfectly with your values and skills.</p>\n\n<ul>\n<li>At least 7 years experience as a data scientist, data science manager or equivalent, including at least 2 years of demonstrated people management.</li>\n<li>Expert in Python, SQL; Fluency in R</li>\n<li>Expert at Postgres and cloud-based data warehousing (e.g. BigQuery, Snowflake)</li>\n<li>Expert at data orchestration tools (e.g. Dagster) for building and managing data pipelines</li>\n<li>Expert using dbt for data transformation and modeling within data warehouses;</li>\n<li>Expert with Metabase or similar business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, Looker) for creating dashboards and reports for the organization</li>\n<li>Experience with machine learning frameworks and libraries such as PyTorch, scikit-learn, Tensor Flow, etc.</li>\n<li>Excellent communication and collaboration skills – including stellar writing skills – and a demonstrated ability to manage cross-functional relationships and external stakeholder requests and facilitate decision-making conversations</li>\n<li>Experience building and leading a diverse team and fostering an inclusive, empathetic culture</li>\n<li>Demonstrated ability to lead by influence: coaching, mentoring, creating and reinforcing culture, and setting an example for your team with your actions.</li>\n</ul>\n<h3><strong>It’s a Bonus if You Have:</strong></h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal experience with the social safety net, or other mission-relevant government services</li>\n<li>Experience with large language models and fine-tuning pre-trained models</li>\n<li>Knowledge of prompt engineering and working with APIs of large-scale generative AI models, such as the GPT, Gemini, Claude, or Llama model families</li>\n<li>Experience with explainable AI tools such as SHAP, LIME</li>\n<li>Expertise in data preprocessing for AI/ML, feature engineering, and model evaluation techniques</li>\n<li>Experience with government data</li>\n</ul>\n\n<p><strong>What You’ll Get</strong></p>\n<h3><strong>Salary:</strong></h3>\n<p>Code for America’s salary bands are transparent as a part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
