This outfit brings me back to the reviews for Prada's Spring '09 collection, where so many items were so impractical (jackets that button up the back, anyone?) that fashion editors were dismissing the runway as a purely idealized vision of clothes to come. Well, here is one instance in which one of such garments is worn on the street, with a lot of style. Practical? Maybe not- if you need to cover your mouth/nose from the cold, you arguably need sleeves. But I think it brings us to a new level where an overcoat doesnt have to be the final word. The unconventional layering mix-up instantly reminded me of Gaultier's past collections; notably S/S 1993 and A/W 1993-94, where vests and tanktops were worn over double-breasted suits. I love his style-- the baggier fit of his pants suit his physique well. Love the mink muffler with its cowl. And the vest serves almost like a man's version of a corset-- or SWAT vest... He's the best I've seen thus far mixing of luxe, whimsy, and masculine style. Could be done a bit better, but the idea is great. I did a shoot this past fall with a Paul & Shark Nylon vest over a sport jacket, cashmere sweater, and wool tie. Had a very English country look to it, but the nylon vest brought it to the city. This gent takes it a bit more fashion. And since everyone is doing pants with no break, this makes the contrast of the lux suit, fashion and casual simultaniously.
