And Esther<MH635> set<MH7760> Mordecai<MH4782> over<MH5921> the house<MH1004> of Haman<MH2001b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Then Esther<MH635> spoke<MH1696> again<MH3254> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>to the king<MH4428>, fell<MH5307> at his feet<MH7272>, wept<MH1058>, and pleaded<MH2603a> for<MH2603a> his compassion<MH2603a> to avert<MH5674a> the evil<MH7463a> <i>scheme</i> of Haman<MH2001b> the Agagite<MH91> and his plot<MH4284> which<MH834> he had devised<MH2803> against<MH5921> the Jews<MH3064>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>And the king<MH4428> extended<MH3447> the golden<MH2091> scepter<MH8275> to Esther<MH635>. So Esther<MH635> got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then she said<MH559>, “If<MH518> it pleases<MH5921, 2895> the king<MH4428> and if<MH518> I have found<MH4672> favor<MH2580> before<MH6440> him, and the matter<MH1697> <i>seems</i> proper<MH3787> to the king<MH4428> and I am pleasing<MH2896a> in his sight<MH5869>, let it be written<MH3789> to revoke<MH7725> the letters<MH5612> devised<MH4284> by Haman<MH2001b>, the son<MH1121> of Hammedatha<MH1992b> the Agagite<MH91>, which<MH834> he wrote<MH3789> to eliminate<MH6> the Jews<MH3064> who<MH834> are in all<MH3605> the king’s<MH4428> provinces<MH4082>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>For how<MH351c> can I endure<MH3201> to see<MH7200> the disaster<MH7463a> which<MH834> will happen<MH4672> to<MH4672> my people<MH5971a>, and how<MH351c> can I endure<MH3201> to see<MH7200> the destruction<MH12> of my kindred<MH4138>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325> said<MH559> to Queen<MH4436> Esther<MH635> and to Mordecai<MH4782> the Jew<MH3064>, “Behold<MH2009>, I have given<MH5414> the house<MH1004> of Haman<MH2001b> to Esther<MH635>, and they have hanged<MH8518> him on the wooden<MH6086> <i>gallows</i> because<MH5921, 834> he had reached<MH7971> out<MH7971> with his hand<MH3027> against the Jews<MH3064>. <p class="hdg">The King’s Decree Avenges the Jews</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now you write<MH3789> to the Jews<MH3064> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>as you see<MH5869> fit<MH2896a>, in the king’s<MH4428> name<MH8034>, and seal<MH2856> <i>it</i> with the king’s<MH4428> signet<MH2885> ring<MH2885>; for a decree<MH3791> which<MH834> is written<MH3789> in the name<MH8034> of the king<MH4428> and sealed<MH2856> with the king’s<MH4428> signet<MH2885> ring<MH2885> may not be revoked<MH7725>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So the king’s<MH4428> scribes<MH5613b> were summoned<MH7121> at that time<MH6256> in the third<MH7992> month<MH2320> (that is, the month<MH2320> Sivan<MH5510>), on the twenty-third<MH6242, 7969> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>day; and it was written<MH3789> in accordance with everything<MH3605> that Mordecai<MH4782> commanded<MH6680> the Jews<MH3064>, the satraps<MH323>, the governors<MH6346>, and the officials<MH8269> of the provinces<MH4082> which<MH834> <i>extended</i> from India<MH1912> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Cush<MH3568a>, 127<MH7651, 6242, 3967> provinces<MH4082>, to every<MH4082> province<MH4082> according to its script<MH3791>, and to every<MH5971a> people<MH5971a> according to their language<MH3956>, as well as to the Jews<MH3064> according to their script<MH3791> and their language<MH3956>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He wrote<MH3789> in the name<MH8034> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>, and sealed<MH2856> it with the king’s<MH4428> signet<MH2885> ring<MH2885>, and sent<MH7971> letters<MH5612> by couriers<MH7323> on horses<MH5483b>, riding<MH7392> on royal<MH327> relay<MH7409> horses<MH7409>, offspring<MH1121> of racing<MH7424> mares<MH7424>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>In the letters the king<MH4428> granted<MH5414> the Jews<MH3064> who<MH834> were in each<MH5892b> and every<MH3605> city<MH5892b> <i>the right</i> to assemble<MH6950> and to defend<MH5975> their lives<MH5315>, to destroy<MH8045>, kill<MH2026>, and eliminate<MH6> the entire<MH3605> army<MH2428> of <i>any</i> people<MH5971a> or province<MH4082> which was going to attack<MH6696b> them, <i>including</i> children<MH2945> and women<MH802>, and to plunder<MH962> their spoils<MH7998>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>on one<MH259> day<MH3117> in all<MH3605> the provinces<MH4082> of King<MH4428> Ahasuerus<MH325>, on the thirteenth<MH7969, 6240> <i>day</i> of the twelfth<MH8147, 6240> month<MH2320> (that is, the month<MH2320> Adar<MH143>). <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>A copy<MH6572> of the edict<MH3791> to be <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>issued<MH5414> as law<MH1881> in each<MH4082> and every<MH3605> province<MH4082> was published<MH1540> to all<MH3605> the peoples<MH5971a>, so that the Jews<MH3064> would be ready<MH6264> for this<MH2088> day<MH3117> to avenge<MH5358> themselves on their enemies<MH340>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>The couriers<MH7323>, hurrying<MH926> and speeded<MH1765> by the king’s<MH4428> command<MH1697>, left<MH3318>, riding<MH7392> on the royal<MH327> relay<MH7409> horses<MH7409>; and the decree<MH1881> was issued<MH5414> at the citadel<MH1002> in Susa<MH7800>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Mordecai<MH4782> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the presence<MH6440> of the king<MH4428> in a royal<MH4438> robe<MH3830> of violet<MH8504> and white<MH2353>, with a large<MH1419> crown<MH5850> of gold<MH2091> and a garment<MH8509> of fine<MH948> linen<MH948> and purple<MH713>; and the city<MH5892b> of Susa<MH7800> shouted<MH6670a> and rejoiced<MH8055>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>For the Jews<MH3064> there was light<MH219a>, joy<MH8057>, jubilation<MH8342>, and honor<MH3366>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/esther/8-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>In each<MH4082> and every<MH3605> province<MH4082> and in each<MH5892b> and every<MH3605> city<MH5892b>, wherever<MH4725, 834> the king’s<MH4428> commandment<MH1697> and his decree<MH1881> arrived<MH5060>, there was joy<MH8057> and jubilation<MH8342> for the Jews<MH3064>, a feast<MH4960> and a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>holiday<MH2896a, 3117>.
