Each of these uses provides insight into the cultural, spiritual, and economic life of the biblical world.

1. Livestock: The term "stock" is often used to refer to animals, particularly those that are domesticated for agricultural purposes. Livestock was a significant part of the economy in biblical times, serving as a measure of wealth and a source of sustenance. For example, in Genesis 30:43, we read about Jacob's prosperity: "Thus Jacob became exceedingly prosperous, and he owned large flocks, maidservants and menservants, and camels and donkeys." Here, the "large flocks" are indicative of his wealth and God's blessing upon him.

2. Family Lineage: "Stock" can also refer to one's ancestry or family line. This usage underscores the importance of heritage and lineage in the biblical narrative. In Isaiah 51:1-2, the prophet calls the people to remember their origins: "Listen to Me, you who pursue righteousness, who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were cut, and to the quarry from which you were hewn. Look to Abraham your father and to Sarah who gave you birth." Here, the "rock" and "quarry" metaphorically represent the ancestral "stock" from which the Israelites descended, emphasizing their identity as God's chosen people.

3. Material for Idols: The term "stock" is also used in the context of idolatry, referring to the wood or material from which idols are crafted. This usage highlights the futility and folly of idol worship. In Jeremiah 10:8, the prophet declares, "But they are altogether senseless and foolish, instructed by worthless idols made of wood!" The "wood" or "stock" here is a symbol of the lifeless and powerless nature of idols, contrasting with the living God of Israel.

4. Symbol of Rebellion: In some instances, "stock" is used metaphorically to describe stubbornness or rebellion against God. In Jeremiah 2:27, the prophet rebukes the people for their idolatry: "They say to a tree, ‘You are my father,’ and to a stone, ‘You gave me birth.’ For they have turned their backs to Me and not their faces. Yet in their time of trouble they say, ‘Arise and save us!’" The reference to a "tree" as a father illustrates the absurdity of idol worship and the people's spiritual rebellion.

In summary, the term "stock" in the Bible encompasses a range of meanings, from the practical aspects of livestock and economic wealth to the spiritual implications of lineage and idolatry. Each usage reflects the broader themes of God's provision, the importance of heritage, and the call to worship the one true God.
ATS Bible Dictionary
Stock
The trunk of a tree, Job 14:8, or a reproachful name for the idols carved out of it, Jeremiah 2:27; Hosea 4:12.
