<span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Is this<MH2088> not <i>that</i> from which<MH834> my lord<MH113> drinks<MH8354>, and which he indeed<MH5172> uses<MH5172> for<MH5172> divination<MH5172>? You have done<MH7489a> wrong<MH7489a> in doing<MH6213a> this<MH834>!’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>he overtook<MH5381> them and spoke<MH1696> these<MH428> words<MH1697> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And they said<MH559> to him, “Why<MH4100> does my lord<MH113> say<MH1696> such words<MH1697> as these<MH428>? Far<MH2486> be it from your servants<MH5650> to do<MH6213a> such<MH2088> a thing<MH1697>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Behold<MH2005>, the money<MH3701> which<MH834> we found<MH4672> in the opening<MH6310> of our sacks<MH572> we have brought<MH7725> back<MH7725> to you from the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a>. How<MH349> then could we steal<MH1589> silver<MH3701> or<MH176> gold<MH2091> from your lord’s<MH113> house<MH1004>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>With whomever<MH834> of your servants<MH5650> it is found<MH4672>, he shall die<MH4191>, and we also<MH1571> shall be my lord’s<MH113> slaves<MH5650>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So he said<MH559>, “Now<MH6258> let it indeed<MH1571> be according to your words<MH1697>; he with whom<MH834> it is found<MH4672> shall be my slave<MH5650>, but <i>the rest of</i> you shall be <i>considered</i> innocent<MH5355a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then they hurried<MH4116>, each<MH376> man<MH376> lowered<MH3381> his sack<MH572> to the ground<MH776>, and each<MH376> man<MH376> opened<MH6605a> his sack<MH572>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And he searched<MH2664>, beginning<MH2490c> with the oldest<MH1419> and ending<MH3615> with the youngest<MH6996b>; and the cup<MH1375> was found<MH4672> in Benjamin’s<MH1144> sack<MH572>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then they tore<MH7167> their clothes<MH8071> <i>in grief,</i> and when each<MH376> man<MH376> had loaded<MH6006> his donkey<MH2543>, they returned<MH7725> to the city<MH5892b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>When Judah<MH3063> and his brothers<MH251> came<MH935> to Joseph’s<MH3130> house<MH1004>, he was still<MH5750> there<MH8033>, and they fell<MH5307> down<MH5307> to the ground<MH776> before<MH6440> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559> to them, “What<MH4100> is this<MH2088> thing<MH4639> that you have done<MH6213a>? Do you not know<MH3045> that a man<MH376> who<MH834> is like<MH3644> me can indeed<MH5172> practice<MH5172> divination<MH5172>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>So Judah<MH3063> said<MH559>, “What<MH4100> can we say<MH559> to my lord<MH113>? What<MH4100> <i>words</i> can we speak<MH1696>? And how<MH4100> can we justify<MH6663> ourselves? God<MH430> has found<MH4672> out<MH4672> the guilt<MH5771> of your servants<MH5650>; behold<MH2009>, we are my lord’s<MH113> slaves<MH5650>, both<MH1571> we and the one in whose<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>possession<MH3027> the cup<MH1375> has been found<MH4672>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But he said<MH559>, “Far<MH2486> be it from me to do<MH6213a> this<MH2088>. The man<MH376> in whose<MH834> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>possession<MH3027> the cup<MH1375> has been found<MH4672>, he shall be my slave<MH5650>; but as for you, go<MH5927> up<MH5927> in peace<MH7965> to your father<MH1>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then Judah<MH3063> approached<MH5066> him and said<MH559>, “Oh<MH994a> my lord<MH113>, may your servant<MH5650> please<MH4994> speak<MH1696> a word<MH1697> in my lord’s<MH113> ears<MH241>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>do not be<MH2734> angry<MH639, 2734> with your servant<MH5650>; for you are equal to Pharaoh<MH6547>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>My lord<MH113> asked<MH7592> his servants<MH5650>, saying<MH559>, ‘Have<MH3426> you a father<MH1> or<MH176> a brother<MH251>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And we said<MH559> to my lord<MH113>, ‘We have<MH3426> an old<MH2205> father<MH1> and a little<MH6996a> boy<MH3206> <i>born in our father’s</i> old<MH2208> age<MH2208>. Now his brother<MH251> is dead<MH4191>, so he alone<MH905> is left<MH3498> of his mother<MH517>, and his father<MH1> loves<MH157> him.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then you said<MH559> to your servants<MH5650>, ‘Bring<MH3381> him down<MH3381> to me so that I may set<MH7760> my eyes<MH5869> on him.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>But we said<MH559> to my lord<MH113>, ‘The boy<MH5288> cannot<MH3201, 3808> leave<MH5800a> his father<MH1>, for if he should leave<MH5800a> his father<MH1>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>his father would die<MH4191>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>You said<MH559> to your servants<MH5650>, however, ‘Unless<MH518, 3808> your youngest<MH6996b> brother<MH251> comes<MH3381> down<MH3381> with you, you will not see<MH7200> my face<MH6440> again<MH3254>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>So it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> when<MH3588> we went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to your servant<MH5650> my father<MH1>, we told<MH5046> him the words<MH1697> of my lord<MH113>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And our father<MH1> said<MH559>, ‘Go<MH7725> back<MH7725>, buy<MH7666> us a little<MH4592> food<MH400>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>But we said<MH559>, ‘We cannot<MH3201, 3808> go<MH3381> down<MH3381>. If<MH518> our youngest<MH6996b> brother<MH251> is with us, then we will go<MH3381> down<MH3381>; for we cannot<MH3201, 3808> see<MH7200> the man’s<MH376> face<MH6440> unless<MH369> our youngest<MH6996b> brother<MH251> is with us.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then your servant<MH5650> my father<MH1> said<MH559> to us, ‘You know<MH3045> that my wife<MH802> bore<MH3205> me two<MH8147> sons; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>and the one<MH259> left<MH3318> me, and I said<MH559>, “Surely<MH389> he is torn<MH2963> to<MH2963> pieces<MH2963>,” and I have not seen<MH7200> him since<MH5704, 2008>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>If you also<MH1571> take<MH3947> this<MH2088> one<MH2088> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>me, and harm<MH611> happens<MH7136a> to him, you will bring<MH3381> my gray<MH7872> hair<MH7872> down<MH3381> to Sheol<MH7585> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>sorrow<MH7463a>.’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>So now<MH6258>, when I come<MH935> to your servant<MH5650>, my father<MH1>, and the boy<MH5288> is not with us—since <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>our father’s life<MH5315> is so<MH7194> attached<MH7194> to the boy’s life<MH5315>— <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/44-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>when he sees<MH7200> that the boy<MH5288> is not <i>with us,</i> he will die<MH4191>.
