<t><p class="indent1">You have consumed<MH3615> them, <t><p class="indent1"><i>But</i> they refused<MH3985> to accept<MH3947> discipline<MH4148>. <t><p class="indent1">They have made<MH2388> their faces<MH6440> harder<MH2388> than<MH4480> rock<MH5553>; <t><p class="indent1">They have refused<MH3985> to repent<MH7725>. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then I said<MH559>, “They are only<MH389> the poor<MH1800b>, <t><p class="indent1">They are<MH2973> foolish<MH2973>; <t><p class="indent1">For they do not know<MH3045> the way<MH1870> of the LORD<MH3068> <t><p class="indent1"><i>Or</i> the judgment<MH4941> of their God<MH430>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>“I will go<MH1980> to the great<MH1419> <t><p class="indent1">And speak<MH1696> to them, <t><p class="indent1">For they know<MH3045> the way<MH1870> of the LORD<MH3068> <t><p class="indent1"><i>And</i> the judgment<MH4941> of their God<MH430>.” <t><p class="indent1">But together<MH3162> they <i>too</i> have broken<MH7665> the yoke<MH5923> <t><p class="indent1"><i>And</i> burst<MH5423> the restraints<MH4147>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Therefore<MH5921, 3651> a lion<MH743b> from the forest<MH3293a> will kill<MH5221> them, <t><p class="indent1">A wolf<MH2061> of the deserts<MH6160> will destroy<MH7703> them, <t><p class="indent1">A leopard<MH5246> is watching<MH8245> their cities<MH5892b>. <t><p class="indent1">Everyone<MH3605> who goes<MH3318> out<MH3318> of them will be torn<MH2963> in<MH2963> pieces<MH2963>, <t><p class="indent1">Because<MH3588> their wrongdoings<MH6588> are<MH7231> many<MH7231>, <t><p class="indent1">Their apostasies<MH4878> are<MH6105a> numerous<MH6105a>. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“Why<MH335> should I forgive<MH5545> you? <t><p class="indent1">Your sons<MH1121> have forsaken<MH5800a> Me <t><p class="indent1">And sworn<MH7650> by those who are not gods<MH430>. <t><p class="indent1">When I had fed<MH7646> them to<MH7646> the<MH7646> full<MH7646>, <t><p class="indent1">They committed<MH5003> adultery<MH5003> <t><p class="indent1">And stayed<MH1481a> at the prostitute’s<MH2181> house<MH1004>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>“They were well-fed<MH2109> lusty<MH7904> horses<MH5483b>, <t><p class="indent1">Each<MH376> one<MH376> neighing<MH6670a> at<MH413> his neighbor’s<MH7453> wife<MH802>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“Shall I not punish<MH6485> <i>them</i> for these<MH428> <i>things?</i>” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, <p class="indent1stline">“And shall I not avenge<MH5358> Myself<MH5315> <t><p class="indent1">On a nation<MH1471> such<MH834> as this<MH2088>? <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>“Go<MH5927> up<MH5927> through her vine<MH7795b> rows<MH7795b> and destroy<MH7843>, <t><p class="indent1">But do not execute<MH6213a> a complete<MH3617> destruction<MH3617>; <t><p class="indent1">Strip<MH5493> away<MH5493> her branches<MH5189>, <t><p class="indent1">For they are not the LORD’S<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>“For the house<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478> and the house<MH1004> of Judah<MH3063> <t><p class="indent1">Have dealt<MH898> very<MH898> treacherously<MH898> with Me,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>They have lied<MH3584> about the LORD<MH3068> <t><p class="indent1">And said<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Not He; <t><p class="indent1">Misfortune<MH7463a> will not come<MH935> upon us, <t><p class="indent1">Nor will we see<MH7200> sword<MH2719> or famine<MH7458>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>“The prophets<MH5030> are <i>as</i> wind<MH7307>, <t><p class="indent1">And the word<MH1699b> is not in them. <t><p class="indent1">So<MH3541> it will be done<MH6213a> to them!” <p class="hdg">Judgment Proclaimed</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Therefore<MH3651>, this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of armies<MH6635> says<MH559>: <p class="indent1stline">“Because<MH3282> you have spoken<MH1696> this<MH2088> word<MH1697>, <t><p class="indent1">Behold<MH2009>, I am making<MH5414> My words<MH1697> fire<MH784> in your mouth<MH6310>, <t><p class="indent1">And this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> wood<MH6086>, and it will consume<MH398> them. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>“Behold<MH2009>, I am bringing<MH935> a nation<MH1471> against<MH5921> you from far<MH4801> away<MH4801>, you house<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <t><p class="indent1">“It is an enduring<MH386> nation<MH1471>, <t><p class="indent1">It is an ancient<MH5769> nation<MH1471>, <t><p class="indent1">A nation<MH1471> whose language<MH3956> you do not know<MH3045>, <t><p class="indent1">Nor<MH3808> can you understand<MH8085> what<MH4100> they say<MH1696>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>“Their quiver<MH827> is like an open<MH6605a> grave<MH6913>, <t><p class="indent1">All<MH3605> of them are warriors<MH1368>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>“They will devour<MH398> your harvest<MH7105a> and your food<MH3899>; <t><p class="indent1">They will devour<MH398> your sons<MH1121> and your daughters<MH1323>; <t><p class="indent1">They will devour<MH398> your flocks<MH6629> and your herds<MH1241>; <t><p class="indent1">They will devour<MH398> your vines<MH1612> and your fig<MH8384> trees<MH8384>; <t><p class="indent1">They will demolish<MH7567> your fortified<MH4013> cities<MH5892b>, in which<MH834> you trust<MH982>, with the sword<MH2719>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>“Yet even<MH1571> in those<MH1992a> days<MH3117>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, “I will not make<MH6213a> a complete<MH3617> destruction<MH3617> of you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And it shall come<MH1961> about<MH1961> when<MH3588> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>they say<MH559>, ‘Why<MH8478, 4100> has the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430> done<MH6213a> all<MH3605> these<MH428> things<MH428> to us?’ then you shall say<MH559> to them, ‘Just<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> you have abandoned<MH5800a> Me and served<MH5647> foreign<MH5236> gods<MH430> in your land<MH776>, so<MH3651> you will serve<MH5647> strangers<MH2114a> in a land<MH776> that is not yours.’ <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>“Declare<MH5046> this<MH2088> in the house<MH1004> of Jacob<MH3290> <t><p class="indent1">And proclaim<MH8085> it in Judah<MH3063>, saying<MH559>, <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>‘Now<MH4994> hear<MH8085> this<MH2088>, you foolish<MH5530> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>senseless<MH369, 3820> people<MH5971a>, <t><p class="indent1">Who have eyes<MH5869> but do not see<MH7200>, <t><p class="indent1">Who have ears<MH241> but do not hear<MH8085>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>‘Do you not fear<MH3372a> Me?’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <t><p class="indent1">‘Do you not tremble<MH2342a> in My presence<MH6440>? <t><p class="indent1">For I have placed<MH7760> the sand<MH2344> as a boundary<MH1366> for the sea<MH3220>, <t><p class="indent1">An eternal<MH5769> limit<MH2706>, and it will not cross<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> it. <t><p class="indent1">Though the waves<MH1530> toss<MH1607>, they cannot<MH3808> prevail<MH3201>; <t><p class="indent1">Though they roar<MH1993>, they will not cross<MH5674a> over<MH5674a> it. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/5-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>‘But this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> has<MH1961> a stubborn<MH5637> and rebellious<MH4784> heart<MH3820>;
