It's a jungle out there in series television, but this dynamic duo has found the secret to success and continues to be seen in their second season Mondays in nationwide syndication on "The Disney Afternoon" (check local listings) and Saturday mornings on CBS at 8 a.m.(ET)/7 a.m. (PT).
When Timon & Pumbaa are awakened from their afternoon nap by a bumble bee, they set out to capture the annoying insect, but find themselves the targets of an entire swarm in "Bumble In The Jungle," airing November 25 in syndication (check local listings). A cartoon short, sans dialogue, combining broad, slapstick humor with excerpts from classical compositions by Strauss, Donizetti, Smetana, Suppe, Gounod, and Haydn, "Bumble in the Jungle" takes traditional classical music and places it in a not-so-traditional setting -- animation.
"As advocates of music, we wanted to introduce our young audiences to a variety of classical music, but do it in a subtle way. With these two characters, it makes for a very energetic, fun cartoon," explains Bobs Gannaway, the series' supervising producer, who created the idea for the short.
Gannaway and series producer/director Tony Craig selected tracks, varying in tempo and length, by the classical composers and cut the music specifically to set the tone for each sequence in the eight-minute short. The finished product depicts Timon & Pumbaa in a variety of moods, such as sleepy, energetic, sneaky, and militaristic.
"The music dictates the movement of the characters, which is unusual these days," states Gannaway. "In this case, we've used music as the foundation of the short, and the character movement follows the music."
Rounding out "Bumble in the Jungle" is a 2-1/2 minute "Fantasia-like" short set to Beethoven's Fifth Symphony, entitled "Beethoven's Whiff." Set to classical music arranged by the series' composer, Stephen James Taylor, both shorts were scored with a 38-piece orchestra combining authentic sounds with non-stop gags.

[ Clips | Pictures | Fun & Games ]

(c) Disney.
