The agency wants to add a second downtown light-rail line in the area, which would tie into existing service at Union Station, the soon-to-open Oak Cliff street car line and <strong><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350/http://texascentral.com/">Texas Central Railway</a></strong>’s potential downtown terminus for a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350/http://www.dallasnews.com/news/transportation/20141022-proposed-routes-for-dallas-houston-high-speed-rail-revealed.ece">bullet train that would get people to Houston in 90 minutes</a>.</p> <p>Of course, everyone involved says there are no talks about land sales going on. And TCR has said they haven’t even picked a location for their high-speed rail station. Hopes that the company would pick that part of downtown is spurring DART’s ambitious plans in the first place.</p> <p>Still, an executive with <em>The DMN</em>’s parent company said the media organization won’t “stand in the way of progress” and could “explore options for the possible redevelopment of our portion of the site.”</p> <p>“That could mean we would continue to office there or we could move to another location downtown,” said Dan Blizzard, <strong><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350/http://www.ahbelo.com/">A.H. Belo</a></strong>’s senior vice president and secretary. “We would not leave downtown.”</p> <p>WFAA president and general manager Mike Devlin said neither the TV station nor its parent company have been in talks about selling its building. Like Blizzard, he said his company was not aware that DART had identified it as a good place to put transit-oriented development when the agency labeled it as such in November.</p> <p>Devlin said he couldn’t comment about whether the TV station would consider selling if the high-speed train and area transit plans go through because he can’t “answer a hypothetical.”</p> <p>Meanwhile, Blizzard said that redeveloping The DMN’s property would be very costly and difficult given complex infrastructure at the site. The paper has been there for decades. Part of the site used to be where the paper was printed. Blizzard said infrastructure built for that would present a complicated scenario for anyone wanting to do something vastly different with the site.</p> <p>“It would be very expensive to adapt,” he said in November.</p> <div id="attachment_6863" style="width: 310px" class="wp-caption alignright"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350/http://transportationblog.dallasnews.com/files/2015/01/ROCKOFTRUTH.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-6863" title="Metro Central" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350im_/http://transportationblog.dallasnews.com/files/2015/01/ROCKOFTRUTH-300x175.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="175"/></a><p class="wp-caption-text">The journalism mission statement on the front of The Dallas Morning News building is known as "The Rock of Truth" and is photographed daily by passersby.</p></div> <p>There’s also the matter of the building’s prominence. It was designed by famed Dallas architect George Dahl. The paper’s home is famous for its “Rock of Truth,” a massive mission statement carved several stories high above the building’s main entrance.</p> <p>“You would have to find a way to save the façade,” Blizzard said.</p> <p>Those factors could make redeveloping the site cost-prohibitive to a developer only looking to turn that piece of land into something new, like apartments or offices or retail. But, he said, a developer using the paper’s land as a small piece of a much larger project could make redevelopment financially feasible.</p> <p>“Those are all things that a larger scale developer could work with,” he said.</p> </div><div class="OUTBRAIN ArticleOutbrainThumb" data-src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350oe_/http://transportationblog.dallasnews.com/2015/01/will-transit-expansion-bullet-train-displace-dmn-and-wfaa.html/" data-widget-id="AR_6" data-ob-template="dallasnews"></div> <div class="OUTBRAIN ArticleOutbrainList" data-src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350oe_/http://transportationblog.dallasnews.com/2015/01/will-transit-expansion-bullet-train-displace-dmn-and-wfaa.html/" data-widget-id="AR_7" data-ob-template="dallasnews"></div> <script type="text/javascript" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350js_/http://widgets.outbrain.com/outbrain.js"></script><h3 class="tf1f3 r5 sbd groupHeadline simple-separator-top">Top Picks</h3><div style="clear:both;"></div><script type="text/javascript" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350js_/http://www.dallasnews.com/?widgetName=topPicks&contentId=1079301&js"></script> <!-- .entry-content --> </article> <script type="text/javascript">jqLoad.push(function(){contextlyInit();});</script> <!-- #post-6861 --> <div id="comments"> <h2 id="comments-title"> 43 thoughts on “<span>Could The DMN and its ‘Rock of Truth’ be moving?</span>” </h2> <ol class="commentlist"> <li class="comment even thread-even depth-1" id="li-comment-15007"> <article id="comment-15007" class="comment"> <footer class="comment-meta"> <div class="comment-author vcard"> <img alt="" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350im_/http://0.gravatar.com/avatar/?d=http://res.dallasnews.com/resources/images/DMNlogoBLK.png&s=68" class="avatar avatar-68 photo avatar-default" height="68" width="68"/><span class="fn">Anonymous</span> on <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150615101350/http://transportationblog.dallasnews.com/2015/01/will-transit-expansion-bullet-train-displace-dmn-and-wfaa.html/#comment-15007"><time pubdate datetime="2015-01-13T12:51:37+00:00">January 13, 2015 at 12:51 pm</time></a> <span class="says">said:</span> </div><!-- .comment-author .vcard --> </footer> <div class="comment-content"><p> Hey, it would also be a good location for the new home of the Texas Rangers. The wide open spaces between Houston and Dallas are not the qualifying criteria for a project like this. This will not be any faster than driving, when all things are considered – transportation to the terminal, check in, security, delays, etc. a 1 hour flight takes about six hours when all things are considered. How much easier would it be to simply program a car to go from Dallas to Houston using a dedicated highway lane? And once you get there, you would already HAVE a car to get around in. As I understand it, the bullet train only has train cars for passengers, no flat cars for automobiles. So, if you ride the train to Houston, you walk, rent a car, or ride public transportation.
