Halogenated MIAs have shown improved pharmaceutical properties; however, characterisation and synthesis of new-to-nature halogenated MIAs remain a challenge in slow-growing plants with limited genetic tractability. Here, we demonstrate a platform for de novo biosynthesis of two bioactive MIAs, serpentine and alstonine, in baker’s yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, reaching titers of 8.85 mg/L and 4.48 mg/L, respectively, when cultivated in fed-batch micro bioreactors. Using this MIA biosynthesis platform, we undertake a systematic exploration of the derivative space surrounding these compounds and produce halogenated MIAs. The aim of the current study is to develop a fermentation process for halogenated MIAs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monoterpenoid%20indole%20alkaloids" title="monoterpenoid indole alkaloids">monoterpenoid indole alkaloids</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saccharomyces%20cerevisiae" title=" Saccharomyces cerevisiae"> Saccharomyces cerevisiae</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=halogenated%20derivatives" title=" halogenated derivatives"> halogenated derivatives</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fermentation" title=" fermentation"> fermentation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/150245/biosynthesis-of-natural-and-halogenated-plant-alkaloids-in-yeast" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/150245.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">210</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">50</span> Advanced Technologies and Algorithms for Efficient Portfolio Selection</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Liagkouras">Konstantinos Liagkouras</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Metaxiotis"> Konstantinos Metaxiotis</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper we present a classification of the various technologies applied for the solution of the portfolio selection problem according to the discipline and the methodological framework followed. Often, due to high load and over time, various hardware faults occur in servers that translate to errors, resulting to malfunction or even server breakdown. CPU, RAM and hard drive (HDD) are the hardware parts that concern server administrators the most regarding errors. In this work, selected RAM, HDD and CPU errors, that have been observed or can be simulated in kernel ring buffer log files from two groups of Linux servers, are investigated. Moreover, a severity characterization is given for each error type. Better understanding of such errors can lead to more efficient analysis of kernel logs that are usually exploited for fault diagnosis and prediction. In addition, this work summarizes ways of simulating hardware errors in RAM and HDD, in order to test the error detection and correction mechanisms of a Linux server. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hardware%20errors" title="hardware errors">hardware errors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kernel%20logs" title=" Kernel logs"> Kernel logs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Linux%20servers" title=" Linux servers"> Linux servers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RAM" title=" RAM"> RAM</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hard%20disk" title=" hard disk"> hard disk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CPU" title=" CPU"> CPU</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140496/hardware-error-analysis-and-severity-characterization-in-linux-based-server-systems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140496.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">154</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">47</span> Developing Emission Factors of Fugitive Particulate Matter Emissions for Construction Sites in the Middle East Area</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hala%20A.%20Hassan">Hala A. The meteorological conditions and topography of the area make it highly susceptible to wind-blown particles which raise many air quality concerns. Air quality tools such as field monitoring, emission factors, and dispersion modeling have been used in previous research studies to analyze the release and impacts of fugitive PM in the region. However, these tools have been originally developed based on experiments made for European and North American regions. In this work, an experimental campaign was conducted on April-May 2014 in a construction site in Doha city, Qatar. The ultimate goal is to evaluate the applicability of the existing emission factors for construction sites in dry and arid areas like the Middle East. As the recipients of what is considered to be the most prestigious award in architecture, these architects are worth examining not only because of their exemplary work but also because of the strong influence they have on architectural culture in general. Rather than attempting to interpret their projects, the methodology chosen focuses on what the architects themselves have to say on the subject. The research aims at, and, as the tabular form of the findings shows, also succeeds in revealing the numerous and diverse ways different aspects of what is termed as the Past can potentially enrich contemporary design practices. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=design%20methodology" title="design methodology">design methodology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pritzker%20Prize%20Laureates" title=" Pritzker Prize Laureates"> Pritzker Prize Laureates</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=past" title=" past"> past</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=culture" title=" culture"> culture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tradition" title=" tradition"> tradition</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/186349/the-unique-journeys-from-different-pasts-to-multiple-presents-in-the-work-of-the-pritzker-prize-laureates-of-2010-2020" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/186349.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">44</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">45</span> OSEME: A Smart Learning Environment for Music Education</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Sofianos">Konstantinos Sofianos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Stefanidakis"> Michael Stefanidakis</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nowadays, advances in information and communication technologies offer a range of opportunities for new approaches, methods, and tools in the field of education and training. A smart learning system fully adapts to a student's needs and provides them with an education based on their preferences, learning styles, and learning backgrounds. It is a wise friend and available at any time, in any place, and with any digital device. In this paper, we propose an intelligent learning system, which includes an ontology with all elements of the learning process (learning objects, learning activities) and a massive open online course (MOOC) system. A specially built piece of software that deals with the drilling kinematics is presented. The cutting forces are calculated based on the tool geometry, the cutting conditions and the tool/work piece materials. The results are verified by experimental work. Finally, the response surface methodology (RSM) is applied and mathematical models of the total thrust force and the thrust force developed because of the main cutting edges are proposed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=CAD" title="CAD">CAD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=application%20programming%20interface" title=" application programming interface"> application programming interface</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=response%20surface%20methodology" title=" response surface methodology"> response surface methodology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=drilling" title=" drilling"> drilling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RSM" title=" RSM"> RSM</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32951/simulating-drilling-using-a-cad-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32951.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">470</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">43</span> Study of Fly Ash Geopolymer Based Composites with Polyester Waste Addition</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Sotiriadis">Konstantinos Sotiriadis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Olesia%20Mikhailova"> Olesia Mikhailova</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the present work, fly ash geopolymer based composites including polyester (PES) waste were studied. Compressive and bending strength measurements, water absorption test and determination of thermal conductivity coefficient were performed. The results showed that the addition of sand in a mixture of geopolymer with 5% PES content led to higher compressive strength, while it increased water absorption and reduced thermal conductivity coefficient. The increase of PES addition in geopolymer mortars resulted in a more dense structure, indicated by the increase of strength and thermal conductivity and the decrease of water absorption. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fly%20ash" title="fly ash">fly ash</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geopolymers" title=" geopolymers"> geopolymers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polyester%20waste" title=" polyester waste"> polyester waste</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=composites" title=" composites"> composites</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24754/study-of-fly-ash-geopolymer-based-composites-with-polyester-waste-addition" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24754.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">423</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">42</span> An Ontology for Smart Learning Environments in Music Education</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Sofianos">Konstantinos Sofianos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michail%20Stefanidakis"> Michail Stefanidakis</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Nowadays, despite the great advances in technology, most educational frameworks lack a strong educational design basis. E-learning has become prevalent, but it faces various challenges such as student isolation and lack of quality in the learning process. An intelligent learning system provides a student with educational material according to their learning background and learning preferences. It records full information about the student, such as demographic information, learning styles, and academic performance. This information allows the system to be fully adapted to the student’s needs. In this paper, we propose a framework and an ontology for music education, consisting of the learner model and all elements of the learning process (learning objects, teaching methods, learning activities, assessment). This framework can be integrated into an intelligent learning system and used for music education in schools for the development of professional skills and beyond. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intelligent%20learning%20systems" title="intelligent learning systems">intelligent learning systems</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=e-learning" title=" e-learning"> e-learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=music%20education" title=" music education"> music education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ontology" title=" ontology"> ontology</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=semantic%20web" title=" semantic web"> semantic web</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/153256/an-ontology-for-smart-learning-environments-in-music-education" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/153256.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">139</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">41</span> Static Output Feedback Control of a Two-Wheeled Inverted Pendulum Using Sliding Mode Technique</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yankun%20Yang">Yankun Yang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xinggang%20Yan"> Xinggang Yan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Sirlantzis"> Konstantinos Sirlantzis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gareth%20Howells"> Gareth Howells</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents a static output feedback sliding mode control method to regulate a two-wheeled inverted pendulum system with considerations of matched and unmatched uncertainties. This study describes the characteristics of patients diagnosed with ATTR-CA from 2019 until present at the Nuclear Medicine Department of Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center and AHEPA Hospital. These centers have extensive experience in amyloidosis and modern technological equipment for its diagnosis. Materials and Methods: Records of consecutive patients (N=73) diagnosed with any type of amyloidosis were collected, analyzed, and prospectively followed. The diagnosis of amyloidosis was made using specific myocardial scintigraphy with Tc-99m DPD. Demographic characteristics, including age, gender, marital status, height, and weight, were collected in a database. Clinical characteristics, such as amyloidosis type (ATTR and AL), serum biomarkers (BNP, troponin), electrocardiographic findings, ultrasound findings, NYHA class, aortic valve replacement, device implants, and medication history, were also collected. Some of the most significant results are presented. Results: A total of 73 cases (86% male) were diagnosed with amyloidosis over four years. The mean age at diagnosis was 82 years, and the main symptom was dyspnea. Most patients suffered from ATTR-CA (65 vs. 8 with AL). Out of all the ATTR-CA patients, 61 were diagnosed with wild-type and 2 with two rare mutations. Twenty-eight patients had systemic amyloidosis with extracardiac involvement, and 32 patients had a history of bilateral carpal tunnel syndrome. Four patients had already developed polyneuropathy, and the diagnosis was confirmed by DPD scintigraphy, which is known for its high sensitivity. Among patients with isolated cardiac involvement, only 6 had left ventricular ejection fraction below 40%. The majority of ATTR patients underwent tafamidis treatment immediately after diagnosis. Conclusion: In conclusion, the experiences shared by the two centers and the continuous exchange of information provide valuable insights into the diagnosis and management of cardiac amyloidosis. Clinical suspicion of amyloidosis and early diagnostic approach are crucial, given the availability of non-invasive techniques. Cardiac scintigraphy with DPD can confirm the presence of the disease without the need for a biopsy. The ultimate goal still remains continuous education and awareness of clinical cardiologists so that this systemic and treatable disease can be diagnosed and certified promptly and treatment can begin as soon as possible. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=amyloidosis" title="amyloidosis">amyloidosis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diagnosis" title=" diagnosis"> diagnosis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=myocardial%20scintigraphy" title=" myocardial scintigraphy"> myocardial scintigraphy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tc-99m%20DPD" title=" Tc-99m DPD"> Tc-99m DPD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transthyretin" title=" transthyretin"> transthyretin</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176716/experience-of-two-major-research-centers-in-the-diagnosis-of-cardiac-amyloidosis-from-transthyretin" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176716.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">90</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">39</span> Retrieving Similar Segmented Objects Using Motion Descriptors</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20C.%20Kartsakalis">Konstantinos C. Modern approaches in medical image segmentation tend to consider fuzziness as a characteristic and inherent feature of the depicted object, instead of an undesirable trait. In this paper, a novel technique for efficient image retrieval in the context of images in which segmented objects are either crisp or fuzzily bounded is presented. Moreover, the proposed method is applied in the case of multiple, even conflicting, segmentations from field experts. Experimental results demonstrate the efficiency of the suggested method in retrieving similar objects from the aforementioned categories while taking into account the fuzzy nature of the depicted data. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fuzzy%20object" title="fuzzy object">fuzzy object</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fuzzy%20image%20segmentation" title=" fuzzy image segmentation"> fuzzy image segmentation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=motion%20descriptors" title=" motion descriptors"> motion descriptors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MRI%20imaging" title=" MRI imaging"> MRI imaging</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=object-based%20image%20retrieval" title=" object-based image retrieval"> object-based image retrieval</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22736/retrieving-similar-segmented-objects-using-motion-descriptors" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22736.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">375</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">38</span> Sulfate Attack on Pastes Made with Different C3A and C4AF Contents and Stored at 5°C</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Sotiriadis">Konstantinos Sotiriadis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rados%C5%82aw%20Mr%C3%B3z"> Radosław Mróz</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the present work the internal sulfate attack on pastes made from pure clinker phases was studied. Gypsum was used as the sulfate bearing compound, while calcium carbonate added to differentiate the binders produced. The phases formed were identified by XRD analysis. The results showed that ettringite was the deterioration phase detected in the case of the low C3A content binder. Carbonation occurred in the specimen without calcium carbonate addition, while portlandite was observed in the one containing calcium carbonate. In the case of the high C3A content binder, traces of thaumasite were detected when calcium carbonate was not incorporated in the binder. A solid solution of thaumasite and ettringite was found when calcium carbonate was added. The amount of C3A had not fully reacted with sulfates, since its corresponding peaks were detected. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=tricalcium%20aluminate" title="tricalcium aluminate">tricalcium aluminate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=calcium%20aluminate%20ferrite" title=" calcium aluminate ferrite"> calcium aluminate ferrite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sulfate%20attack" title=" sulfate attack"> sulfate attack</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=calcium%20carbonate" title=" calcium carbonate"> calcium carbonate</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=low%20temperature" title=" low temperature"> low temperature</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12814/sulfate-attack-on-pastes-made-with-different-c3a-and-c4af-contents-and-stored-at-5c" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/12814.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">334</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">37</span> The Impact of Ramadan Fasting on Blood Pressure: Observational Study and a Meta-Analysis</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rami%20Al%20Jafar">Rami Al Jafar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paul%20Elliott"> Paul Elliott</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20K.%20Tsilidis"> Konstantinos K. To the best of our knowledge, none of the previous studies comprehensively explored the effect on the metabolic profile. In London Ramadan Fasting Study, blood samples were collected from 81 participants before and 10-14 days after Ramadan. Blood samples were analysed using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy which covers 249 metabolites. Mixed-effects models were used to analyse collected data and assess the effect of Ramadan fasting on the metabolic profile. Our observational study involved 85 individuals with a mean age of 45.2 years, and 53.1% of them were males. After Ramadan, forty metabolites were affected significantly by Ramadan fasting. Most of these metabolites were metabolites ratios (24), and the rest were three Glycolysis, three ketone bodies, nine Lipoprotein subclasses and one inflammation marker. This study suggests that Ramadan fasting is significantly associated with changes in the metabolic profile. However, the changes are assumed to be temporary, and the long-term effect of these changes is unknown. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metabolic%20profile" title="metabolic profile">metabolic profile</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ramadan%20fasting" title=" Ramadan fasting"> Ramadan fasting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metabolites" title=" metabolites"> metabolites</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intermittent%20fasting" title=" intermittent fasting"> intermittent fasting</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148317/the-impact-of-ramadan-fasting-on-blood-pressure-observational-study-and-a-meta-analysis" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148317.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">167</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">36</span> Reviewing Soil Erosion in Greece</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paschalis%20Koutalakis">Paschalis Koutalakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=George%20N.%20Zaimes"> George N. In this paper, scientific publications related to soil erosion studies in Greece were reviewed and categorized. To accomplish this, the online search engine of Scopus was used. The key words were “soil”, “erosion” and “Greece.” An analysis of the published articles was conducted at three levels: i) type of publication, ii) chronologic and iii) thematic. A hundred and ten publications published in scientific journals were reviewed. The results showed that the awareness regarding the soil erosion in Greece has increased only in the last decades. The publications covered a wide range of thematic categories such as the type of studied areas, the physical phenomena that trigger and influence the soil erosion, the negative anthropogenic impacts on them, the assessment tools that were used in order to examine the threat and the proper management. The analysis of these articles was significant and necessary in order to find the scientific gaps of soil erosion studies in Greece and help enhance the sustainability of soil management in the future. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title="climate change">climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=agricultural%20sustainability" title=" agricultural sustainability"> agricultural sustainability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=environmental%20sustainability" title=" environmental sustainability"> environmental sustainability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20management" title=" soil management"> soil management</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/30601/reviewing-soil-erosion-in-greece" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/30601.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">398</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">35</span> Implementation of Human Resource Management in Greek Law Enforcement Agencies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20G.%20Papaioannou">Konstantinos G. Recognizing that HRM is crucial for maximizing organizational performance, the study aims to evaluate its application within Greek law enforcement. A quantitative-descriptive survey was conducted, involving 996 executives from Greek Law Enforcement Agencies (477 from the Hellenic Police and 519 from the Hellenic Coast Guard), through random sampling. The survey, revealed significant concerns regarding the minimal implementation of HRM practices, in both agencies. The findings indicate that HRM practices, such as HR planning, recruitment, job position, selection, training and development, personnel management, compensation, labor relations and health and safety, are minimally applied. Neither the Hellenic Police nor the Hellenic Coast Guard appears to follow a comprehensive HRM plan. The study, contributes both theoretically and practically by highlighting the lack of HRM implementation in these agencies. The data suggest that by adopting strategic HRM practices, these organizations can enhance personnel performance and better fulfill their societal roles. Future research should extend to law enforcement agencies in other countries to draw more representative conclusion. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=coastguard" title="coastguard">coastguard</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20resources%20management" title=" human resources management"> human resources management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=law%20enforcement%20agencies" title=" law enforcement agencies"> law enforcement agencies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=performance%20management" title=" performance management"> performance management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=police" title=" police"> police</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/186658/implementation-of-human-resource-management-in-greek-law-enforcement-agencies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/186658.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">43</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">34</span> New Highly-Scalable Carbon Nanotube-Reinforced Glasses and Ceramics</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20G.%20Dassios">Konstantinos G. The tubes are introduced and bound to the matrix grains by aid of polymeric binders to form flexible green bodies which are sintered and densified by spark plasma sintering to unprecedentedly high densities of 100% of the pure-matrix value. The strategy was validated across a PyrexTM glass / MWCNT composite while no identifiable factors limit application to other types of matrices. Non-destructive evaluation, based on ultrasonics, of the dynamic mechanical properties of the materials including elastic, shear and bulk modulus as well as Poisson’s ratio showed optimum property improvement at 0.5 %wt tube loading while evidence of nanoscale-specific energy dissipative characteristics acting complementary to nanotube bridging and pull-out indicate a high potential in a wide range of reinforcing and multifunctional applications. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ceramic%20matrix%20composites" title="ceramic matrix composites">ceramic matrix composites</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbon%20nanotubes" title=" carbon nanotubes"> carbon nanotubes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=toughening" title=" toughening"> toughening</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ultrasonics" title=" ultrasonics "> ultrasonics </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32657/new-highly-scalable-carbon-nanotube-reinforced-glasses-and-ceramics" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/32657.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">374</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">33</span> Performants: A Digital Event Manager-Organizer</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ioannis%20Andrianakis">Ioannis Andrianakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Manolis%20Falelakis"> Manolis Falelakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Pavlidou"> Maria Pavlidou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Papakonstantinou"> Konstantinos Papakonstantinou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ermioni%20Avramidou"> Ermioni Avramidou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dimitrios%20Kalogiannis"> Dimitrios Kalogiannis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nikolaos%20Milios"> Nikolaos Milios</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Katerina%20Bountakidou"> Katerina Bountakidou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kiriakos%20Chatzidimitriou"> Kiriakos Chatzidimitriou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Panagiotis%20Panagiotopoulos"> Panagiotis Panagiotopoulos</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Artistic events, such as concerts and performances, are challenging to organize because they involve many people with different skill sets. Small and medium venues often struggle to afford the costs and overheads of booking and hosting remote artists, especially if they lack sponsors or subsidies. This limits the opportunities for both venues and artists, especially those outside of big cities. However, more and more research shows that audiences prefer smaller-scale events and concerts, which benefit local economies and communities. To address this challenge, our project “PerformAnts: Digital Event Manager-Organizer” aims to develop a smart digital tool that automates and optimizes the processes and costs of live shows and tours. By using machine learning, applying best practices and training users through workshops, our platform offers a comprehensive solution for a growing market, enhances the mobility of artists and the accessibility of venues and allows professionals to focus on the creative aspects of concert production. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=event%20organization" title="event organization">event organization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=creative%20industries" title=" creative industries"> creative industries</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=event%20promotion" title=" event promotion"> event promotion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=machine%20learning" title=" machine learning"> machine learning</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170627/performants-a-digital-event-manager-organizer" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/170627.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">87</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">32</span> Deep Learning Based, End-to-End Metaphor Detection in Greek with Recurrent and Convolutional Neural Networks</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Perifanos">Konstantinos Perifanos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eirini%20Florou"> Eirini Florou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dionysis%20Goutsos"> Dionysis Goutsos</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This paper presents and benchmarks a number of end-to-end Deep Learning based models for metaphor detection in Greek. We combine Convolutional Neural Networks and Recurrent Neural Networks with representation learning to bear on the metaphor detection problem for the Greek language. The models presented achieve exceptional accuracy scores, significantly improving the previous state-of-the-art results, which had already achieved accuracy 0.82. Furthermore, no special preprocessing, feature engineering or linguistic knowledge is used in this work. The methods presented achieve accuracy of 0.92 and F-score 0.92 with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and bidirectional Long Short Term Memory networks (LSTMs). Comparable results of 0.91 accuracy and 0.91 F-score are also achieved with bidirectional Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs) and Convolutional Recurrent Neural Nets (CRNNs). The models are trained and evaluated only on the basis of training tuples, the related sentences and their labels. The outcome is a state-of-the-art collection of metaphor detection models, trained on limited labelled resources, which can be extended to other languages and similar tasks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metaphor%20detection" title="metaphor detection">metaphor detection</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=deep%20learning" title=" deep learning"> deep learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=representation%20learning" title=" representation learning"> representation learning</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=embeddings" title=" embeddings"> embeddings</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/115854/deep-learning-based-end-to-end-metaphor-detection-in-greek-with-recurrent-and-convolutional-neural-networks" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/115854.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">153</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">31</span> An Assessment of the Hip Muscular Imbalance for Patients with Rheumatism</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anthony%20Bawa">Anthony Bawa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Banitsas"> Konstantinos Banitsas</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Rheumatism is a muscular disorder that affects the muscles of the upper and lower limbs. This condition could potentially progress to impair the movement of patients. This study aims to investigate the hip muscular imbalance in patients with chronic rheumatism. A clinical trial involving a total of 15 participants, made up of 10 patients and 5 control subjects, took place in KATH Hospital between August and September. Participants recruited for the study were of age 54 ± 8years, weight 65± 8kg, and height 176 ± 8cm. Muscle signals were recorded from the rectus femoris, and vastus lateralis on the right and left hip of participants. The parameters used in determining the hip muscular imbalances were the maximum voluntary contraction (MVC%), the mean difference, and hip muscle fatigue levels. The mean signals were compared using a t-test, and the metrics for muscle fatigue assessment were based on the root mean square (RMS), mean absolute value (MAV) and mean frequency (MEF), which were computed between the hip muscles of participants. The results indicated that there were significant imbalances in the muscle coactivity between the right and left hip muscles of patients. The patients’ MVC values were observed to be above 10% when compared with control subjects. Furthermore, the mean difference was seen to be higher with p > 0.002 among patients, which indicated clear differences in the hip muscle contraction activities. The findings indicate significant hip muscular imbalances for patients with rheumatism compared with control subjects. Information about the imbalances among patients will be useful for clinicians in designing therapeutic muscle-strengthening exercises. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=muscular" title="muscular">muscular</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=imbalances" title=" imbalances"> imbalances</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rheumatism" title=" rheumatism"> rheumatism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hip" title=" Hip"> Hip</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161064/an-assessment-of-the-hip-muscular-imbalance-for-patients-with-rheumatism" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/161064.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">115</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">30</span> Experimental Characterization of Composite Material with Non Contacting Methods</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nikolaos%20Papadakis">Nikolaos Papadakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Constantinos%20Condaxakis"> Constantinos Condaxakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Savvakis"> Konstantinos Savvakis</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The aim of this paper is to determine the elastic properties (elastic modulus and Poisson ratio) of a composite material based on noncontacting imaging methods. The open source platform Ncorr is used in this paper which utilizes the method of digital image correlation (DIC). The use of digital image correlation in measuring strain uses random speckle preparation on the surface of the gauge area, image acquisition, and postprocessing the image correlation to obtain displacement and strain field on surface under study. [0]8 fabric glass/epoxy composites specimens were prepared and tested at different orientations 0[o], 30[o], 45[o], 60[o], 90[o]. Each test was recorded with the camera at a constant frame rate and constant lighting conditions. The recorded images were processed through the use of the image processing software. The parameters of the test are reported. The strain map output which is obtained through strain measurement using Ncorr is validated by a) comparing the elastic properties with expected values from Classical laminate theory, b) through finite element analysis. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=composites" title="composites">composites</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ncorr" title=" Ncorr"> Ncorr</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strain%20map" title=" strain map"> strain map</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=videoextensometry" title=" videoextensometry"> videoextensometry</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/104425/experimental-characterization-of-composite-material-with-non-contacting-methods" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/104425.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">144</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">29</span> The Effects of Consistently Reading Whole Novels on the Reading Comprehension of Adolescents with Developmental Disabilities</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pierre%20Brocas">Pierre Brocas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Rizos"> Konstantinos Rizos</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study was conducted to test the effects of introducing a consistent pace and volume of reading whole narratives on adolescents' reading comprehension with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The study was inspired by previous studies conducted on poorer adolescent readers in English schools. The setting was a Free Special Education Needs school in England. Nine male and one female student, between 11-13 years old, across two classrooms participated in the study. All students had a diagnosis of ASD, and all were classified as advanced learners. The classroom teachers introduced reading a whole challenging novel in 12 weeks with consistency as the independent variable. The study used a before-and-after design of testing the participants’ reading comprehension using standardised tests. The participants made a remarkable 1.8 years’ mean progress on the standardised tests of reading comprehension, with three participants making 4+ years progress. The researchers hypothesise that reading novels aloud and at a fast pace in each lesson, that are challenging but appropriate to the participants’ learning level, may have a beneficial effect on the reading comprehension of adolescents with learning difficulties, giving them a more engaged uninterrupted reading experience over a sustained period. However, more studies need to be conducted to test the independent variable across a bigger and more diverse population with a stronger design. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=autism" title="autism">autism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reading%20comprehension" title=" reading comprehension"> reading comprehension</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=developmental%20disabilities" title=" developmental disabilities"> developmental disabilities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=narratives" title=" narratives"> narratives</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140371/the-effects-of-consistently-reading-whole-novels-on-the-reading-comprehension-of-adolescents-with-developmental-disabilities" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140371.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">201</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">28</span> Investigation of the Mechanical Performance of Carbon Nanomembranes for Water Separation Technologies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marinos%20Dimitropoulos">Marinos Dimitropoulos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=George%20Trakakis"> George Trakakis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nikolaus%20Meyerbr%C3%B6ker"> Nikolaus Meyerbröker</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Raphael%20Dalpke"> Raphael Dalpke</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Polina%20Angelova"> Polina Angelova</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Albert%20Schnieders"> Albert Schnieders</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christos%20Pavlou"> Christos Pavlou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christos%20Kostaras"> Christos Kostaras</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Costas%20Galiotis"> Costas Galiotis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Dassios"> Konstantinos Dassios</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Intended for purifying water, water separation technologies are widely employed in a variety of contemporary household and industrial applications. Ultrathin Carbon Nanomembranes (CNMs) offer a highly selective, fast-flow, energy-efficient water separation technology intended for demanding water treatment applications as a technological replacement for biological filtration membranes. The membranes are two-dimensional (2D) materials with sub-nm functional pores and a thickness of roughly 1 nm; they may be generated in large quantities on porous supporting substrates and have customizable properties. The purpose of this work was to investigate and analyze the mechanical characteristics of CNMs and their substrates in order to ensure the structural stability of the membrane during operation. Contrary to macro-materials, it is difficult to measure the mechanical properties of membranes that are only a few nanometers thick. The membranes were supported on atomically flat substrates as well as suspended over patterned substrates, and their inherent mechanical properties were tested with atomic force microscopy. Quantitative experiments under nanomechanical loading, nanoindentation, and nano fatigue demonstrated the membranes' potential for usage in water separation applications. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=carbon%20nanomembranes" title="carbon nanomembranes">carbon nanomembranes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mechanical%20properties" title=" mechanical properties"> mechanical properties</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=AFM" title=" AFM"> AFM</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/165834/investigation-of-the-mechanical-performance-of-carbon-nanomembranes-for-water-separation-technologies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/165834.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">85</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">27</span> The Automated Soil Erosion Monitoring System (ASEMS)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=George%20N.%20Zaimes">George N. Continuous soil erosion measurements are required in order to comprehend the erosional processes and propose effective and efficient conservation measures to mitigate surface erosion. Mitigating soil erosion, especially in Mediterranean countries such as Greece, is essential in order to maintain environmental and agricultural sustainability. In this paper, we present the Automated Soil Erosion Monitoring System (ASEMS) that measures surface soil erosion along with other factors that impact erosional process. Specifically, this system measures ground level changes (surface soil erosion), rainfall, air temperature, soil temperature and soil moisture. Another important innovation is that the data will be collected by remote communication. In addition, stakeholder’s awareness is a key factor to help reduce any environmental problem. The different dissemination activities that were utilized are described. The overall outcomes were the development of an innovative system that can measure erosion very accurately. These data from the system help study the process of erosion and find the best possible methods to reduce erosion. The dissemination activities enhance the stakeholder's and public's awareness on surface soil erosion problems and will lead to the adoption of more effective soil erosion conservation practices in Greece. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=soil%20management" title="soil management">soil management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=climate%20change" title=" climate change"> climate change</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=new%20technologies" title=" new technologies"> new technologies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=conservation%20practices" title=" conservation practices"> conservation practices</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38394/the-automated-soil-erosion-monitoring-system-asems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/38394.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">345</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">26</span> Vitrification and Devitrification of Chromium Containing Tannery Ash</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Savvas%20Varitis">Savvas Varitis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Panagiotis%20Kavouras"> Panagiotis Kavouras</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=George%20Kaimakamis"> George Kaimakamis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eleni%20Pavlidou"> Eleni Pavlidou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=George%20Vourlias"> George Vourlias</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Chrysafis"> Konstantinos Chrysafis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Philomela%20Komninou"> Philomela Komninou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Theodoros%20Karakostas"> Theodoros Karakostas </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Tannery industry produces high quantities of chromium containing waste which also have high organic content. Processing of this waste is important since the organic content is above the disposal limits and the containing trivalent chromium could be potentially oxidized to hexavalent in the environment. This work aims to fabricate new vitreous and glass ceramic materials which could incorporate the tannery waste in stabilized form either for safe disposal or for the production of useful materials. Tannery waste was incinerated at 500oC in anoxic conditions so most of the organic content would be removed and the chromium remained trivalent. Glass forming agents SiO2, Na2O and CaO were mixed with the resulting ash in different proportions with decreasing ash content. Considering the low solubility of Cr in silicate melts, the mixtures were melted at 1400oC and/or 1500oC for 2h and then casted on a refractory steel plate. The resulting vitreous products were characterized by X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Differential Thermal Analysis (DTA), Scanning and Transmission Electron Microscopy (SEM and TEM). XRD reveals the existence of Cr2O3 (eskolaite) crystallites embedded in a glassy amorphous matrix. Such crystallites are not formed under a certain proportion of the waste in the ash-vitrified material. Reduction of the ash proportion increases chromium content in the silicate matrix. From these glassy products, glass-ceramics were produced via different regimes of thermal treatment. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chromium%20containing%20tannery%20ash" title="chromium containing tannery ash">chromium containing tannery ash</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=glass%20ceramic%20materials" title=" glass ceramic materials"> glass ceramic materials</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=thermal%20processing" title=" thermal processing"> thermal processing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vitrification" title=" vitrification"> vitrification</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25645/vitrification-and-devitrification-of-chromium-containing-tannery-ash" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/25645.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">367</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">25</span> Structural Analysis and Strengthening of the National Youth Foundation Building in Igoumenitsa, Greece</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chrysanthos%20Maraveas">Chrysanthos Maraveas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Argiris%20Plesias"> Argiris Plesias</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Garyfalia%20G.%20Triantafyllou"> Garyfalia G. The building is scheduled to be renovated in order to create a Municipal Cultural Center. The bearing capacity and structural integrity have been investigated in relation to the provisions and requirements of the Greek Retrofitting Code (KAN.EPE.) and European Standards (Eurocodes). The capacity of the existing concrete structure that makes up the two central buildings in the complex (buildings II and IV) has been evaluated both in its present form and after including several proposed architectural interventions. The structural system consists of spatial frames of columns and beams that have been simulated using beam elements. Some RC elements of the buildings have been strengthened in the past by means of concrete jacketing and have had cracks sealed with epoxy injections. Static-nonlinear analysis (Pushover) has been used to assess the seismic performance of the two structures with regard to performance level B1 from KAN.EPE. Retrofitting scenarios are proposed for the two buildings, including type Λ steel bracings and placement of concrete shear walls in the transverse direction in order to achieve the design-specification deformation in each applicable situation, improve the seismic performance, and reduce the number of interventions required. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthquake%20resistance" title="earthquake resistance">earthquake resistance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pushover%20analysis" title=" pushover analysis"> pushover analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reinforced%20concrete" title=" reinforced concrete"> reinforced concrete</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=retrofit" title=" retrofit"> retrofit</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strengthening" title=" strengthening"> strengthening</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90098/structural-analysis-and-strengthening-of-the-national-youth-foundation-building-in-igoumenitsa-greece" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/90098.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">292</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">24</span> Acid Attack on Cement Mortars Modified with Rubber Aggregates and EVA Polymer Binder</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Sotiriadis">Konstantinos Sotiriadis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Tup%C3%BD"> Michael Tupý</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nikol%20%C5%BDi%C5%BEkov%C3%A1"> Nikol Žižková</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=V%C3%ADt%20Petr%C3%A1nek"> Vít Petránek</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The acid attack on cement mortars modified with rubber aggregates and EVA polymer binder was studied. Mortar specimens were prepared using a type CEM I 42.5 Portland cement and siliceous sand, as well as by substituting 25% of sand with shredded used automobile tires, and by adding EVA polymer in two percentages (5% and 10% of cement mass). Some specimens were only air cured, at laboratory conditions, and their compressive strength and water absorption were determined. The rest specimens were stored in acid solutions (HCl, H2SO4, HNO3) after 28 days of initial curing, and stored at laboratory temperature. Compressive strength tests, mass measurements and visual inspection took place for 28 days. Compressive strength and water absorption of the air-cured specimens were significantly decreased when rubber aggregates are used. The addition of EVA polymer further reduced water absorption, while had no important impact on strength. Compressive strength values were affected in a greater extent by hydrochloric acid solution, followed by sulfate and nitric acid solutions. The addition of EVA polymer decreased compressive strength loss for the specimens with rubber aggregates stored in hydrochloric and nitric acid solutions. The specimens without polymer binder showed similar mass loss, which was higher in sulfate acid solution followed by hydrochloric and nitric acid solutions. The use of EVA polymer delayed mass loss, while its content did not affect it significantly. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=acid%20attack" title="acid attack">acid attack</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mortar" title=" mortar"> mortar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=EVA%20polymer" title=" EVA polymer"> EVA polymer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rubber%20aggregates" title=" rubber aggregates"> rubber aggregates</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5914/acid-attack-on-cement-mortars-modified-with-rubber-aggregates-and-eva-polymer-binder" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5914.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">287</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">23</span> Drawing Building Blocks in Existing Neighborhoods: An Automated Pilot Tool for an Initial Approach Using GIS and Python</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Pikos">Konstantinos Pikos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dimitrios%20Kaimaris"> Dimitrios Kaimaris</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Although designing building blocks is a procedure used by many planners around the world, there isn’t an automated tool that will help planners and designers achieve their goals with lesser effort. The difficulty of the subject lies in the repeating process of manually drawing lines, while not only it is mandatory to maintain the desirable offset but to also achieve a lesser impact to the existing building stock. In this paper, using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and the Python programming language, an automated tool integrated into ArcGIS PRO, is being presented. Despite its simplistic enviroment and the lack of specialized building legislation due to the complex state of the field, a planner who is aware of such technical information can use the tool to draw an initial approach of the final building blocks in an area with pre-existing buildings in an attempt to organize the usually sprawling suburbs of a city or any continuously developing area. The tool uses ESRI’s ArcPy library to handle the spatial data, while interactions with the user is made throught Tkinter. The main process consists of a modification of building edgescoordinates, using NumPy library, in an effort to draw the line of best fit, so the user can get the optimal results per block’s side. Finally, after the tool runs successfully, a table of primary planning information is shown, such as the area of the building block and its coverage rate. Regardless of the primary stage of the tool’s development, it is a solid base where potential planners with programming skills could invest, so they can make the tool adapt to their individual needs. An example of the entire procedure in a test area is provided, highlighting both the strengths and weaknesses of the final results. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=arcPy" title="arcPy">arcPy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GIS" title=" GIS"> GIS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=python" title=" python"> python</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=building%20blocks" title=" building blocks"> building blocks</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/143445/drawing-building-blocks-in-existing-neighborhoods-an-automated-pilot-tool-for-an-initial-approach-using-gis-and-python" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/143445.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">179</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">22</span> MAGNI Dynamics: A Vision-Based Kinematic and Dynamic Upper-Limb Model for Intelligent Robotic Rehabilitation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Alexandros%20Lioulemes">Alexandros Lioulemes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michail%20Theofanidis"> Michail Theofanidis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Varun%20Kanal"> Varun Kanal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Konstantinos%20Tsiakas"> Konstantinos Tsiakas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maher%20Abujelala"> Maher Abujelala</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chris%20Collander"> Chris Collander</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=William%20B.%20Townsend"> William B. The system is expected to provide personalized rehabilitation by adjusting its resistive and supportive behavior according to a fuzzy intelligence controller that acts as an inference system, which correlates the user’s performance to different stiffness factors. The vision module uses the Kinect’s skeletal tracking to monitor the user’s effort in an unobtrusive and safe way, by estimating the torque that affects the user’s arm. The system’s torque estimations are justified by capturing electromyographic data from primitive hand motions (Shoulder Abduction and Shoulder Forward Flexion). Moreover, we present and analyze how the Barrett WAM generates a force-field with a haptic controller to support or challenge the users. Experiments show that by shifting the proportional value, that corresponds to different stiffness factors of the haptic path, can potentially help the user to improve his/her motor skills. Finally, potential areas for future research are discussed, that address how a rehabilitation robotic framework may include multisensing data, to improve the user’s recovery process. <p
