class="wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity" /> <p>With Christmas over, we still have some seasonal joys likely to last us until April: ‘tis (indeed still) the season! Not to be jolly, but to wrap yourself up at home, with a runny nose, hammering headaches, and a nasty chesty cough. <em>It’s cold season</em>.</p> <p>With all the changes going on in the world, isn’t it consoling that some things at least have constancy? </p> <p>And since I have been nursing a persistent cold (or is it several? who can keep count?) now for weeks, I turned, once more, to the tried and tested knowledge of my early modern predecessors. And lo and behold, I found help in the form of a curious little self-help book from the late 1670s with the catchy title </p> <p><em><a href="https://www.proquest.com/books/new-disease-rational-account-great-colds-couhgs/docview/2240898070/se-2">The New Disease; OR A Rational Account of the Great COLDS AND COUHGS Now Raging amongst Us: SHEWING The true Causes of the said Distempers, and Approved REMEDIES for Their speedy Cure</a></em> (1676)</p> <div class="wp-block-image"> <figure class="aligncenter size-large"><img decoding="async" width="362" height="500" src="https://howtobook.hypotheses.org/files/2025/01/cold-362x500.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-2635" /></figure></div> <p>Just what I was looking for! I know you must be too, so here’s some timely health advice from the 1600s. The anonymous author is J.L., a self-proclaimed “student in Physick and Astrology” – and he will give us a taste of his expertise (basically) for free.</p> <p>Indeed, he has some interesting observations to make: </p> <p>“<em>Colds,”</em> he observes, have “of late [become] a General Affliction wherewith most Persons (especially about this City) are troubled”</p> <p>It’s a big city phenomenon, we all know that. And, undeniably, J.L.’s lurid descriptions of cold symptoms, to many of you, will sound all too familiar: </p> <p>“Head stufft with crude vapours“, “Breasts clogg’d with vitious unconcocted Humours”, “Lungs afflicted and obstructed in their Functions and Offices”, “scarce able to draw [one’s] Breath”… “want of Appetite, and weakness of Digestion” </p> <p>Have you been reading my snivelling Whatsapp laments, J.L? I think he has. </p> <p>“In short, [the] Brain is at last drowned by a deluge of Phlegm, and the Soul is forced to leave the ruinous cottage of the Body” </p> <p>Yes, that is <em>exactly</em> how I have been feeling! I finally feel seen and heard, for not only do those symptoms equal mine. While cold symptoms seem timeless, so, it seems, is people’s dismissive attitude to them: </p> <p>“I confess a <em>Cold</em> to many, seems a very Contemptible matter, not fit to trouble a Doctor with; People generally slight it, but often pay for their Vanity” </p> <p>We have seen in the not-so-recent past how people proud of ‘soldiering through’ can easily become super-spreaders and infect a whole company. And like me, J.L. has no patience with those who don’t take a cold seriously, as he parrots their tiresome chorus: <em>“<strong>Tis but a cold!</strong>’</em>”– you may think so, Karen. Well, think again! With Covid all but forgotten, can we all still acknowledge that handwashing and social distancing go a long way? Your 17<sup>th</sup>-century ancestor is basically begging you: if you’re sick, stay home! And so am I.</p> <p>But no, people won’t listen, even if they find themselves suffering from</p> <p><em>“</em>a general Stupefaction of<a></a> the Animal Spirits, and faint with <em>Coughs,” </em>and they “languish with <em>Catarrhs,</em> and sink under <em>Lethargies,</em> and lose their Senses in <em>Apoplexies,</em> yet still—<em>Tis but a Cold”</em></p> <p>I hear you, J.L! </p> <p>A little cold won’t kill you; you say? Actually, it very well might! Imagine surviving the ‘Great Plague’ only to succumb to ‘a little sniff’! </p> <p>And that is even though most colds are completely avoidable: </p> <p>“<em>Prevention is the best Physick;</em> I know no better way for them to avoid this troublesome companion, that makes a kitchin-stuff pot of your head, and a Limbeck of your nose, than for to keep your self warm, but be sure arm your self against him <em>Cap a Pe,</em> I mean whatever you do secure your head and your feet, for they are common sally-ports where the Enemy enters, keep them therefore warm and dry, a cap will be a good bedfellow”</p> <p>And d**n right he is – nothing has served me better than a hot water bottle at my feet and a warm hat to cover my aching head. I am convinced that more than once I have managed to avert the danger of a looming flu by keeping my feet in water as hot as I could bear it for as long as I could bear it (and a bit of praying won’t hurt either). </p> <p>Speaking of bed-fellows, the following recipe for garlic syrup might mean that you won’t share your bed for a while; but that is probably for the best, unless you intend to infect your whole household. </p> <p>“<em>Take a whole head of Garlick the largest you can get, peel the several Cloves, and bind them all up together again, then put it with a quart of running water into some earthen vessel, and stop it up very close with paste, and let it stand in a hot Oven twelve hours, then being took out do not open it till tis quite cold, for if you should, the spirits and vertue would evaporate, then strain out the Garlick and press out as much as you can of the juice, and boil up that liquor that remains with brown sugar candy to the thickness of a Syrrup, and eat thereof as you have occasion.”</em></p> <p>Besides, garlic is a proven anti-infectant. So, what other excellent advice does J.L. have to pass on? He recommends a good sweat to transform harmful humours into vapours and purify the body. He knows, like we do, that the cold isn’t just some humoural imbalance but a harmful “intruder” that has “by a forcible Entry got Possession of the Tenement of your Body” and thus needs to be expelled. Gotten out of the system, as it were.</p> <p><br>“This sweating will turn the humours in your bodies into vapours, and setting open the Pores will ridd you of them without any more to do”</p> <p>Simple as that. Still, a little product placement doesn’t hurt and so we find him advertising purchasable medicines such as “<em>Diascordium”, “Aurum Diaphonreticum</em>”, or, even better,</p> <p>“<em>Elixar Proprietatis</em> …, the best of which to be had in <em>London</em> is prepared and sold by my worthy friend Doctor <em>Coelson</em> at the <em>Royal Oak</em> on <em>Tower Hill,</em> and is very necessary for all families to keep by them”. Noted.</p> <p>The final lines of this very down-to earth little pamphlet finally left me a bit puzzled, though: </p> <p>“only because I would be civil at parting, I care not if I invite all persons gentle and simple, that shall not have a cold since <em>Michaelmas</em> to dine with me the day after Christmass day next where they shall be very welcome, and have an Hermetical Banquet, drest by a spagyrical Cook”</p> <p>The reference here is (probably) to Thomas Vaughan, an alchemist whose 1652 work whimsically titled <em>A hermeticall banquet, drest by a spagiricall cook: for the better preservation of the microcosme </em>is held by the Ferguson Collection <a href="/Users/lange/Documents/A%20Hermetical%20Banquet%20Drest%20by%20a%20Spagyrical%20cook">(Ak-f.24</a>). This humorous book conflates health with entertainment and feasting and guides the reader through its four chapters – or “courses,” on a journey through the human body, with stopovers at the stomach, brain, liver and heart. The pamphlet is Paracelsian and largely anti-Galenic, with a focus on chemical medicine (designed to act on the specific ailments affecting those body parts).</p> <p>Is this an actual invitation to some kind of lecture? Is it an admission of authorship? Maybe a student of Vaughan’s (if he indeed was the author)? What it definitely does, I believe, is signal the author’s affiliation with a specific strand of esoteric theory, the hermetic tradition, and a rootedness of his little tract in Paracelsian medicine. The cold, supposedly a “New Disease”, might have required new chemical treatments and, for all his reliance on posset drink, garlic and warm clothes, J.L. makes several suggestions for these.</p> <p>Sadly, with Christmas now behind us, I missed the banquet and so cannot tell you more about what was served there.
