Do you sit<MG2521> to try<MG2919> me according<MG2596> to the Law<MG3551>, and in<MG3891> violation<MG3891> of<MG3891> the<MG3891> Law<MG3891>, order<MG2753> me to be struck<MG5180>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>But those present<MG3936> said<MG3004>, &#8220;Are you insulting<MG3058> God&#8217;s<MG2316> high<MG749> priest<MG749>?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>And Paul<MG3972> said<MG5346>, &#8220;I was not aware<MG3609a>, brothers<MG80>, that he is high<MG749> priest<MG749>; for it is written<MG1125>: &#8216;YOU SHALL NOT SPEAK<MG3004> EVIL<MG2560> OF A RULER<MG758> OF YOUR PEOPLE<MG2992>.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But Paul<MG3972>, perceiving<MG1097> that one<MG1520> group<MG3313> were Sadducees<MG4523> and the other<MG2087> Pharisees<MG5330>, <i>began</i> crying<MG2896> out<MG2896> in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Council<MG4892>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Brothers<MG435, 80>, I am<MG1510> a Pharisee<MG5330>, a son<MG5207> of Pharisees<MG5330>; I am on<MG2919> trial<MG2919> for the hope<MG1680> and resurrection<MG386> of the dead<MG3498>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>When he said<MG2980> this<MG3778>, a dissension<MG4714b> occurred<MG1096> between the Pharisees<MG5330> and Sadducees<MG4523>, and the assembly<MG4128> was divided<MG4977>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>For the Sadducees<MG4523> say<MG3004> that there is no<MG3361> resurrection<MG386>, nor<MG3383> an angel<MG32a>, nor<MG3383> a spirit<MG4151>, but the Pharisees<MG5330> acknowledge<MG3670> them all<MG297>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And a great<MG3173> uproar<MG2906> occurred<MG1096>; and some<MG5100> of the scribes<MG1122> of the Pharisaic<MG5330> party<MG3313> stood<MG450> up<MG450> and <i>started</i> arguing<MG1264> heatedly<MG1264>, saying<MG3004>, &#8220;We find<MG2147> nothing<MG3762> wrong<MG2556> with this<MG3778> man<MG444>; suppose<MG1487, 1161> a spirit<MG4151> or<MG2228> an angel<MG32a> has spoken<MG2980> to him?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And when a great<MG4183> dissension<MG4714b> occurred<MG1096>, the commander<MG5506> was<MG5399> afraid<MG5399> that Paul<MG3972> would be torn<MG1288> to<MG1288> pieces<MG1288> by them, and he ordered<MG2753> the troops<MG4753> to go<MG2597> down<MG2597> and take<MG726> him away<MG726> from them by<MG726> force<MG726>, and bring<MG71> him into the barracks<MG3925b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>But on the following<MG1897> night<MG3571>, the Lord<MG2962> stood<MG2186> near<MG2186> him and said<MG3004>, &#8220;Be<MG2293> courageous<MG2293>! For as you have testified<MG1263> to the <i>truth</i> about<MG4012> Me in Jerusalem<MG2419>, so<MG3779> you must<MG1163> testify<MG3140> in Rome<MG4516> also<MG2532>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">A Conspiracy to Kill Paul</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>When it was day<MG2250>, the Jews<MG2453> formed<MG4160> a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>conspiracy<MG4963> and put<MG332> themselves<MG1438> under<MG332> an<MG332> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>oath<MG332>, saying<MG3004> that they would neither<MG3383> eat<MG2068> nor<MG3383> drink<MG4095> until<MG2193> they had killed<MG615> Paul<MG3972>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>There were more<MG4183> than forty<MG5065b> who formed<MG4160> this<MG3778> plot<MG4945>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>They came<MG4334> to the chief<MG749> priests<MG749> and the elders<MG4245> and said<MG3004>, &#8220;We have put<MG332> ourselves<MG1438> under<MG332> an<MG332> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>oath<MG332> to taste<MG1089> nothing<MG3367> until<MG2193> we have killed<MG615> Paul<MG3972>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now<MG3568> therefore<MG3767>, you <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>and the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>Council<MG4892> notify<MG1718> the commander<MG5506> to bring<MG2609> him down<MG2609> to you, as<MG5613> though<MG5613> you were<MG3195> going<MG3195> to<MG3195> investigate<MG1231> his case<MG3588, 4012> more<MG199> thoroughly<MG199>; and as for us, we are ready<MG2092> to kill<MG337> him before<MG4253> he comes<MG1448> near<MG1448> <i>the place.</i>&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But the son<MG5207> of Paul&#8217;s<MG3972> sister<MG79> heard<MG191> about their ambush<MG1747>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>and he came<MG3854> and entered<MG1525> the barracks<MG3925b> and told<MG518> Paul<MG3972>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Paul<MG3972> called<MG4341> one<MG1520> of the centurions<MG1543> to himself and said<MG5346>, &#8220;Take<MG520> this<MG3778> young<MG3494> man<MG3494> to the commander<MG5506>, for he has<MG2192> something<MG5100> to report<MG518> to him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So<MG3767> he took<MG3880> him and led<MG71> him to the commander<MG5506> and *said<MG5346>, &#8220;Paul<MG3972> the prisoner<MG1198> called<MG4341> me over<MG4341> to him and asked<MG2065> me to bring<MG71> this<MG3778> young<MG3495> man<MG3495> to you because he has<MG2192> something<MG5100> to tell<MG2980> you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The commander<MG5506> took<MG1949> him by the hand<MG5495>, and stepping<MG402> aside<MG402>, <i>began</i> to inquire<MG4441> of him privately<MG2596, 2398>, &#8220;What<MG5101> is it that you have<MG2192> to report<MG518> to me?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And he said<MG3004>, &#8220;The Jews<MG2453> have agreed<MG4934> to ask<MG2065> you to bring<MG2609> Paul<MG3972> down<MG2609> tomorrow<MG839> to the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>Council<MG4892>, as<MG5613> though<MG5613> they were<MG3195> going<MG3195> to<MG3195> inquire<MG4441> somewhat<MG5100> more<MG199> thoroughly<MG199> about<MG4012> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So<MG3767> do not <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>listen<MG3982> to them, for more<MG4183> than forty<MG5065b> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>of them are in hiding<MG1748> to<MG1748> ambush<MG1748> him, and these<MG3748> men<MG3748> have put<MG332> themselves<MG1438> under<MG332> an<MG332> oath<MG332> not to eat<MG2068> or<MG3383> drink<MG4095> until<MG2193> they kill<MG337> him; and now<MG3568> they are ready<MG2092> and waiting<MG4327> for assurance<MG1860> from you.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Then<MG3767> the commander<MG5506> let<MG630> the young<MG3495> man<MG3495> go<MG630>, instructing<MG3853> him, &#8220;Tell<MG1583> no<MG3367> one<MG3367> that you have notified<MG1718> me of these<MG3778> things<MG3778>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Paul Moved to Caesarea</p><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And he called<MG4341> to him two<MG1417> of the centurions<MG1543> and said<MG3004>, &#8220;Get<MG2090> two<MG1250> hundred<MG1250> soldiers<MG4757> ready<MG2090> by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>the third<MG5154> hour<MG5610> of the night<MG3571> to proceed<MG4198> to Caesarea<MG2542>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>with seventy<MG1440> horsemen<MG2460> and two<MG1250> hundred<MG1250> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>spearmen<MG1187>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span><i>They were</i> also<MG5037> to provide<MG3936> mounts<MG2934> to put<MG1913> Paul<MG3972> on<MG1913> and bring<MG1295> him safely<MG1295> to Felix<MG5344> the governor<MG2232>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And he wrote<MG1125> a letter<MG1992> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>with the following<MG3778> content<MG5179b>: <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span><p class="tab1">&#8220;Claudius<MG2804> Lysias<MG3079>, to the most<MG2903> excellent<MG2903> governor<MG2232> Felix<MG5344>: Greetings<MG5463>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span><p class="tab1">When this<MG3778> man<MG435> was seized<MG4815> by the Jews<MG2453> and was<MG3195> about<MG3195> to<MG3195> be killed<MG337> by them, I came<MG2186> up<MG2186> to them with the troops<MG4753> and rescued<MG1807> him, after learning<MG3129> that he was a Roman<MG4514>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span><p class="tab1">And wanting<MG1014> to ascertain<MG1921> the basis<MG156> for the charges<MG1458> they were bringing<MG1458> against<MG1458> him, I brought<MG2609> him down<MG2609> to their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>Council<MG4892>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span><p class="tab1">and I found<MG2147> that he was being accused<MG1458> regarding<MG4012> questions<MG2213> in their Law<MG3551>, but <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>was not charged<MG2192, 1462> with anything<MG3367> deserving<MG514> death<MG2288> or<MG2228> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>imprisonment<MG1199>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span><p class="tab1">When I was informed<MG3377> that there would be a plot<MG1917> against<MG1519> the man<MG435>, I sent<MG3992> him to you at once<MG1824>, also<MG2532> instructing<MG3853> his accusers<MG2725a> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>bring<MG3004> charges<MG3004> against<MG4314> him before<MG1909> you.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>So<MG3767> the soldiers<MG4757>, in<MG2596> accordance<MG2596> with<MG2596> their orders<MG1299>, took<MG353> Paul<MG3972> and brought<MG71> him by night<MG3571> to Antipatris<MG494>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>But on the next<MG1887> day<MG1887> they let<MG1439> the horsemen<MG2460> go<MG565> on with him, and they returned<MG5290> to the barracks<MG3925b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>When these<MG3748> <i>horsemen</i> had come<MG1525> to Caesarea<MG2542> and delivered<MG325> the letter<MG1992> to the governor<MG2232>, they also<MG2532> presented<MG3936> Paul<MG3972> to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when he had read<MG314> <i>it,</i> he also<MG2532> asked<MG1905> from what<MG4169> province<MG1885> <i>Paul was,</i> and when he learned<MG4441> that he was from Cilicia<MG2791>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/acts/23-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>he said<MG5346>, &#8220;I will give<MG1251> you a<MG1251> hearing<MG1251> when<MG3752> your accusers<MG2725a> arrive<MG3854> as<MG2532> well<MG2532>,&#8221;
