The quantitative measure of cyclostationary mean, variance, spectrum of mean amplitude, and mean power spectral density of noise is analyzed. The qualitative response behavior of stochastic jump and bifurcation are investigated. The validity of the present approach in predicting the quantitative and qualitative statistical responses is supported by utilizing Monte Carlo simulations. The present analysis without imposing restrictive analytical conditions can be directly derived by solving non-linear algebraic equations. The analytical solution gives reliable quantitative and qualitative prediction of mean and noise response for the Duffing system subjected to both sinusoidal signal and white noise excitation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cyclostationary" title="cyclostationary">cyclostationary</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=duffing%20system" title=" duffing system"> duffing system</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gaussian%20linearization" title=" Gaussian linearization"> Gaussian linearization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sinusoidal" title=" sinusoidal"> sinusoidal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=white%20noise" title=" white noise"> white noise</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20532/cyclostationary-gaussian-linearization-for-analyzing-nonlinear-system-response-under-sinusoidal-signal-and-white-noise-excitation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/20532.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">489</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">930</span> Medial Axis Analysis of Valles Marineris</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dan%20James">Dan James</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Medial Axis of the Main Canyon of Valles Marineris is determined geometrically with maximally inscribed discs aligned with the boundaries or rims of the Main Canyon. The influence of the higher harmonic of the magnetisation on the core deformation is also more significant in the corners of the leg. The modal analysis proposes an efficient solution to determine the dispersion curves of an arbitrary waveguide cross-sectional. Dispersion curves are essential in the discontinuity localization based on guided waves. In this work, an isotropic hollow cylinder is dynamically analyzed in ANSYS to obtain resonant frequencies and mode shapes all of them associated with the dispersion curves. The numerical results provide the relation between frequency and wavelength which is the foundation of the dispersion curves. IDF curves, especially those in Peninsular Malaysia, are often built using moving windows of rainfalls. However, these windows do not represent the actual rainfall events since the duration of rainfalls is usually prefixed. Hence, instead of using moving windows, this study aims to find regionalized distributions for IDF curves of extreme rainfalls based on storm events. Homogeneity test is performed on annual maximum of storm intensities to identify homogeneous regions of storms in Peninsular Malaysia. The L-moment method is then used to regionalized Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution of these annual maximums and subsequently. IDF curves are constructed using the regional distributions. The differences between the IDF curves obtained and IDF curves found using at-site GEV distributions are observed through the computation of the coefficient of variation of root mean square error, mean percentage difference and the coefficient of determination. The small differences implied that the construction of IDF curves could be simplified by finding a general probability distribution of each region. This will also help in constructing IDF curves for sites with no rainfall station. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=IDF%20curves" title="IDF curves">IDF curves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=L-moments" title=" L-moments"> L-moments</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=regionalization" title=" regionalization"> regionalization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=storm%20events" title=" storm events"> storm events</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42876/regionalization-of-idf-curves-with-l-moments-for-storm-events" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/42876.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">528</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">926</span> Snake Locomotion: From Sinusoidal Curves and Periodic Spiral Formations to the Design of a Polymorphic Surface</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ennios%20Eros%20Giogos">Ennios Eros Giogos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nefeli%20Katsarou"> Nefeli Katsarou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Giota%20Mantziorou"> Giota Mantziorou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Elena%20Panou"> Elena Panou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nikolaos%20Kourniatis"> Nikolaos Kourniatis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Socratis%20Giannoudis"> Socratis Giannoudis</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the context of the postgraduate course Productive Design, Department of Interior Architecture of the University of West Attica in Athens, under the guidance of Professors Nikolaos Koyrniatis and Socratis Giannoudis, kinetic mechanisms with parametric models were examined for their further application in the design of objects. In the first phase, the students studied a motion mechanism that they chose from daily experience and then analyzed its geometric structure in relation to the geometric transformations that exist. In the second phase, the students tried to design it through a parametric model in Grasshopper3d for Rhino algorithmic processor and plan the design of its application in an everyday object. For the project presented, our team began by studying the movement of living beings, specifically the snake. By studying the snake and the role that the environment has in its movement, four basic typologies were recognized: serpentine, concertina, sidewinding and rectilinear locomotion, as well as its ability to perform spiral formations. Most typologies are characterized by ripples, a series of sinusoidal curves. For the application of the snake movement in a polymorphic space divider, the use of a coil-type joint was studied. In the Grasshopper program, the simulation of the desired motion for the polymorphic surface was tested by applying a coil on a sinusoidal curve and a spiral curve. It was important throughout the process that the points corresponding to the nodes of the real object remain constant in number, as well as the distances between them and the elasticity of the construction had to be achieved through a modular movement of the coil and not some elastic element (material) at the nodes. Using mesh (repeating coil), the whole construction is transformed into a supporting body and combines functionality with aesthetics. The set of elements functions as a vertical spatial network, where each element participates in its coherence and stability. Depending on the positions of the elements in terms of the level of support, different perspectives are created in terms of the visual perception of the adjacent space. For the implementation of the model on the scale (1:3), (0.50m.x2.00m.), the load-bearing structure that was studied has aluminum rods for the basic pillars Φ6mm and Φ 2.50 mm, for the secondary columns. Filling elements and nodes are of similar material and were made of MDF surfaces. During the design process, four trapezoidal patterns were picketed, which function as filling elements, while in order to support their assembly, a different engraving facet was done. The nodes have holes that can be pierced by the rods, while their connection point with the patterns has a half-carved recess. The patterns have a corresponding recess. The nodes are of two different types depending on the column that passes through them. The patterns and knots were designed to be cut and engraved using a Laser Cutter and attached to the knots using glue. The parameters participate in the design as mechanisms that generate complex forms and structures through the repetition of constantly changing versions of the parts that compose the object. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=polymorphic" title="polymorphic">polymorphic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=locomotion" title=" locomotion"> locomotion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sinusoidal%20curves" title=" sinusoidal curves"> sinusoidal curves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=parametric" title=" parametric"> parametric</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148422/snake-locomotion-from-sinusoidal-curves-and-periodic-spiral-formations-to-the-design-of-a-polymorphic-surface" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/148422.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">105</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">925</span> Centrifuge Modeling of Monopiles Subjected to Lateral Monotonic Loading</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=H.%20R.%20Khodaei">H. The design of these monopiles is based on the theories related with laterally loaded piles. One of the most common methods to analyze and design the piles subjected to lateral loads is the p-y curves. In the present study, centrifuge tests are conducted in order to obtain the p-y curves. Series of tests were designed in order to investigate the scaling laws in the centrifuge for monotonic loading. Also, two important parameters, the embedded depth L of the pile in the soil and free length e of the pile, as well as their ratios were studied via five experimental tests. Finally, the p-y curves of API are presented to be compared with the curves obtained from the tests so that the differences could be demonstrated. The results show that the p-y curves proposed by API highly overestimate the lateral load bearing capacity. It suggests that these curves need correction and modification for each site as the soil conditions change. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=centrifuge%20modeling" title="centrifuge modeling">centrifuge modeling</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monopile" title=" monopile"> monopile</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lateral%20loading" title=" lateral loading"> lateral loading</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=p-y%20curves" title=" p-y curves"> p-y curves</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/84252/centrifuge-modeling-of-monopiles-subjected-to-lateral-monotonic-loading" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/84252.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">247</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">924</span> Curcumin Attenuates Angiogenesis in Liver Fibrosis and Inhibits Angiogenic Properties of Hepatic Stellate Cells</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Feng%20Zhang">Feng Zhang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Li%20Chen"> Li Chen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Desong%20Kong"> Desong Kong</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xiaoping%20Zhang"> Xiaoping Zhang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Xiaojing%20Zhu"> Xiaojing Zhu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yin%20Lu"> Yin Lu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shizhong%20Zheng"> Shizhong Zheng</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Sinusoidal pathological angiogenesis is a novel therapeutic target for liver fibrosis. We demonstrated that curcumin ameliorated fibrotic injury and sinusoidal angiogenesis in rat liver with fibrosis caused by carbon tetrachloride. Curcumin reduced the expression of angiogenic markers in fibrotic liver. Experiments in vitro showed that the viability and vascularization of rat liver sinusoidal endothelial cells (LSECs) were not impaired by curcumin. Further investigations showed that curcumin inhibited VEGF expression in hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) by disrupting PDGF-βR/ERK and mTOR pathways. HSC motility and vascularization were also suppressed by curcumin via blocking PDGF-βR/FAK/RhoA cascade. Gain- or loss-of-function analyses revealed that activation of PPARγ was required for curcumin to inhibit angiogenic properties of HSCs. We concluded that curcumin attenuated sinusoidal angiogenesis in liver fibrosis possibly by targeting HSCs via a PPARγ activation-dependent mechanism. PPARγ could be a target molecule for reducing pathological angiogenesis during liver fibrosis. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=angiogenesis" title="angiogenesis">angiogenesis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hepatic%20stellate%20cell" title=" hepatic stellate cell"> hepatic stellate cell</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=curcumin" title=" curcumin"> curcumin</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=peroxisome%20proliferator-activated%20receptor-%CE%B3" title=" peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ"> peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2873/curcumin-attenuates-angiogenesis-in-liver-fibrosis-and-inhibits-angiogenic-properties-of-hepatic-stellate-cells" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/2873.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">512</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">923</span> Regionalization of IDF Curves, by Interpolating Intensity and Adjustment Parameters - Application to Boyacá, Colombia</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pedro%20Mauricio%20Acosta">Pedro Mauricio Acosta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Carlos%20Andr%C3%A9s%20Caro"> Carlos Andrés Caro</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This research presents the regionalization of IDF curves for the department of Boyacá, Colombia, which comprises 16 towns, including the provincial capital, Tunja. The present study is focused on the effect of different doses of diclofenac (4 mg/kg/body weight and 14 mg/kg/body weight on histoarchitecture of the liver from 7-28 days of the investigation. Diclofenac administration resulted in distorted hepatic degeneration and formation of wide areas in the form of sinusoidal gaps. Hepatic fibrosis noticed in different stages of investigation could be attributed to chronic inflammation and reactive oxygen species which results in deposition of extracellular matrix proteins. The abrupt degenerative changes observed during later stages of the experiment showed maximum damage to the liver, and there was enlargement of sinusoidal gaps accompanied by maximum necrosis in the tissues. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=arthritis" title="arthritis">arthritis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=diclofenac" title=" diclofenac"> diclofenac</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=histoarchitecture" title=" histoarchitecture"> histoarchitecture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sinusoidal" title=" sinusoidal"> sinusoidal</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75381/histopathological-alterations-in-liver-of-mice-exposed-to-different-doses-of-diclofenac-sodium" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/75381.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">271</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">921</span> A Comparison between Empirical and Theoretical OC Curves Related to Acceptance Sampling for Attributes</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Encarnacion%20Alvarez">Encarnacion Alvarez</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Noem%C4%B1%20Hidalgo-Rebollo"> Noemı Hidalgo-Rebollo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Juan%20F.%20Munoz"> Juan F. According to the results derived from this method, the company takes the decision of acceptance or rejection of a product. The acceptance sampling can be applied to the technology management, since the acceptance sampling can be seen as a tool to improve the design planning, operation and control of technological products. The theoretical operating characteristic (OC) curves are widely used when dealing with acceptance sampling. In this paper, we carry out Monte Carlo simulation studies to compare numerically the empirical OC curves derived from the empirical results to the customary theoretical OC curves. We analyze various possible scenarios in such a way that the differences between the empirical and theoretical curves can be observed under different situations. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=single-sampling%20plan" title="single-sampling plan">single-sampling plan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lot" title=" lot"> lot</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Monte%20Carlo%20simulation" title=" Monte Carlo simulation"> Monte Carlo simulation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=quality%20control" title=" quality control"> quality control</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/19429/a-comparison-between-empirical-and-theoretical-oc-curves-related-to-acceptance-sampling-for-attributes" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/19429.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">466</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">920</span> Fast and Efficient Algorithms for Evaluating Uniform and Nonuniform Lagrange and Newton Curves</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Taweechai%20Nuntawisuttiwong">Taweechai Nuntawisuttiwong</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Natasha%20Dejdumrong"> Natasha Dejdumrong</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Newton-Lagrange Interpolations are widely used in numerical analysis. However, it requires a quadratic computational time for their constructions. In computer aided geometric design (CAGD), there are some polynomial curves: Wang-Ball, DP and Dejdumrong curves, which have linear time complexity algorithms. Thus, the computational time for Newton-Lagrange Interpolations can be reduced by applying the algorithms of Wang-Ball, DP and Dejdumrong curves. In order to use Wang-Ball, DP and Dejdumrong algorithms, first, it is necessary to convert Newton-Lagrange polynomials into Wang-Ball, DP or Dejdumrong polynomials. In this work, the algorithms for converting from both uniform and non-uniform Newton-Lagrange polynomials into Wang-Ball, DP and Dejdumrong polynomials are investigated. Thus, the computational time for representing Newton-Lagrange polynomials can be reduced into linear complexity. In addition, the other utilizations of using CAGD curves to modify the Newton-Lagrange curves can be taken. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lagrange%20interpolation" title="Lagrange interpolation">Lagrange interpolation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=linear%20complexity" title=" linear complexity"> linear complexity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=monomial%20matrix" title=" monomial matrix"> monomial matrix</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Newton%20interpolation" title=" Newton interpolation"> Newton interpolation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110424/fast-and-efficient-algorithms-for-evaluating-uniform-and-nonuniform-lagrange-and-newton-curves" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/110424.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">234</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">919</span> Curve Fitting by Cubic Bezier Curves Using Migrating Birds Optimization Algorithm</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mitat%20Uysal">Mitat Uysal</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A new met heuristic optimization algorithm called as Migrating Birds Optimization is used for curve fitting by rational cubic Bezier Curves. Application of this technique to fluids presents unique problems such as physical separation; control of heat and mass transfer in certain industrial applications; and improvement of some fluid process methods. The problem as stated is to obtain the velocity distribution, wall shear stress and energy expended when a pipe containing a stagnant viscous fluid is externally excited by a sinusoidal pulse, one end of the pipe being pinned. On the other hand, the effect of different parameters on the results are presented. Such parameters include fluid viscosity, frequency of oscillations and pipe geometry. It was found that the flow velocity through the pump is maximum at the pipe wall, and it decreases rapidly towards the pipe centerline. The frequency of oscillation should be above a certain value in order to obtain meaningful flow velocity. The amount of energy absorbed in the system is mainly due to pipe wall strain energy, while the fluid pressure and kinetic energies are comparatively small. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sinusoidal%20excitation" title="sinusoidal excitation">sinusoidal excitation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pump" title=" pump"> pump</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=shear%20stress" title=" shear stress"> shear stress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=flow" title=" flow"> flow</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48529/innovative-pump-design-using-the-concept-of-viscous-fluid-sinusoidal-excitation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/48529.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">315</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">916</span> Investigation of Riders' Path on Horizontal Curves</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lemonakis%20Panagiotis">Lemonakis Panagiotis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eliou%20Nikos"> Eliou Nikos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Karakasidis%20Theodoros"> Karakasidis Theodoros</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Botzoris%20George"> Botzoris George</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> It is well known that trajectory along with speed are two of the most important contributing factors in road accidents. Trajectory is meant as the "line“, usually different from the center-line that a driver traverses through horizontal curves which depends on the characteristics of the road environment (especially the curvature), the vehicle and the driver himself. Drivers and especially riders, tend to broaden their paths in order to succeed greater path radiuses and hence, reduce the applied centrifugal force enhancing safety. The objective of the present research is to investigate riders’ path on horizontal curves. Within the context of the research, field measurements were conducted on a rural two lane highway, with the participation of eight riders and the use of an instrumented motorcycle. The research has shown that the trajectory of the riders is correlated to the radius and the length of the horizontal curve as well. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=trajectory" title="trajectory">trajectory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=path" title=" path"> path</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=riders" title=" riders"> riders</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=horizontal%20curves" title=" horizontal curves"> horizontal curves</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5089/investigation-of-riders-path-on-horizontal-curves" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/5089.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">341</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">915</span> Single Feed Circularly Polarized Poly Fractal Antenna for Wireless Applications</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=V.%20V.%20Reddy">V. By combining geometric methods with numerical box’s search algorithm, we show that any such cover should have an area at least 0.0975. This improves the best previous lower bound of 0.096694. In fact, we show that the minimal area of convex hull of circle, equilateral triangle, and rectangle of perimeter 1 is between 0.0975 and 0.09763. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Moser%E2%80%99s%20worm%20problem" title="Moser’s worm problem">Moser’s worm problem</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=closed%20arcs" title=" closed arcs"> closed arcs</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=convex%20cover" title=" convex cover"> convex cover</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=minimal-area%20cover" title=" minimal-area cover"> minimal-area cover</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92526/an-improved-lower-bound-for-minimal-area-convex-cover-for-closed-unit-curves" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/92526.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">211</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">912</span> Nonlinear Finite Element Analysis of Optimally Designed Steel Angelina™ Beams</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ferhat%20Erdal">Ferhat Erdal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Osman%20Tunca"> Osman Tunca</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Serkan%20Tas"> Serkan Tas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Serdar%20Carbas"> Serdar Carbas</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Web-expanded steel beams provide an easy and economical solution for the systems having longer structural members. The main goal of manufacturing these beams is to increase the moment of inertia and section modulus, which results in greater strength and rigidity. Until recently, there were two common types of open web-expanded beams: with hexagonal openings, also called castellated beams, and beams with circular openings referred to as cellular beams, until the generation of sinusoidal web-expanded beams. In the present research, the optimum design of a new generation beams, namely sinusoidal web-expanded beams, will be carried out and the design results will be compared with castellated and cellular beam solutions. Thanks to a reduced fabrication process and substantial material savings, the web-expanded beam with sinusoidal holes (Angelina™ Beam) meets the economic requirements of steel design problems while ensuring optimum safety. The objective of this research is to carry out non-linear finite element analysis (FEA) of the web-expanded beam with sinusoidal holes. The FE method has been used to predict their entire response to increasing values of external loading until they lose their load carrying capacity. FE model of each specimen that is utilized in the experimental studies is carried out. These models are used to simulate the experimental work to verify of test results and to investigate the non-linear behavior of failure modes such as web-post buckling, shear buckling and vierendeel bending of beams. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=steel%20structures" title="steel structures">steel structures</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=web-expanded%20beams" title=" web-expanded beams"> web-expanded beams</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=angelina%20beam" title=" angelina beam"> angelina beam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimum%20design" title=" optimum design"> optimum design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=failure%20modes" title=" failure modes"> failure modes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=finite%20element%20analysis" title=" finite element analysis"> finite element analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55878/nonlinear-finite-element-analysis-of-optimally-designed-steel-angelina-beams" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55878.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">281</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">911</span> Heat Transfer Enhancement Due to the Optimal Porosity in Plate Heat Exchangers with Sinusoidal Plates</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hossein%20Shokouhmand">Hossein Shokouhmand</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seyyed%20Mostafa%20Saadat"> Seyyed Mostafa Saadat</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this paper, the effect of thermal dispersion on the performance of plate heat exchangers (PHEs) with sinusoidal plates is investigated. In this regard, the PHE is considered as a porous medium. The important property of a porous medium is porosity that is defined as the total fluid volume divided by the total volume occupied by the solid and fluid. A 2D array of parallel sinusoidal plates with laminar periodically developed forced convection and single-phase constant property flows and conduction in a homogenous solid phase in two directions is considered. The array of flows is counter and the flows heat capacities are equal. Numerical study of conjugate heat transfer and axial conduction in the solid phase with different plate thicknesses showed that there is an optimal porosity in which the efficiency of heat transfer is up to 4% more than the time when the porosity is near one. It is shown that the optimal porosity at zero angle of inclination depends both on Reynolds number and the aspect ratio. The optimal porosity increased while either the Reynolds number or waviness of plates increased. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plate%20heat%20exchanger" title="plate heat exchanger">plate heat exchanger</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimal%20porosity" title=" optimal porosity"> optimal porosity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=efficiency" title=" efficiency"> efficiency</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aspect%20ratio" title=" aspect ratio"> aspect ratio</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/11031/heat-transfer-enhancement-due-to-the-optimal-porosity-in-plate-heat-exchangers-with-sinusoidal-plates" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/11031.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">405</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">910</span> Stray Light Reduction Methodology by a Sinusoidal Light Modulation and Three-Parameter Sine Curve Fitting Algorithm for a Reflectance Spectrometer</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hung%20Chih%20Hsieh">Hung Chih Hsieh</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cheng%20Hao%20Chang"> Cheng Hao Chang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yun%20Hsiang%20Chang"> Yun Hsiang Chang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yu%20Lin%20Chang"> Yu Lin Chang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In the applications of the spectrometer, the stray light that comes from the environment affects the measurement results a lot. Hence, environment and instrument quality control for the stray reduction is critical for the spectral reflectance measurement. In this paper, a simple and practical method has been developed to correct a spectrometer's response for measurement errors arising from the environment's and instrument's stray light. A sinusoidal modulated light intensity signal was incident on a tested sample, and then the reflected light was collected by the spectrometer. Since a sinusoidal signal modulated the incident light, the reflected light also had a modulated frequency which was the same as the incident signal. Using the three-parameter sine curve fitting algorithm, we can extract the primary reflectance signal from the total measured signal, which contained the primary reflectance signal and the stray light from the environment. The spectra similarity between the extracted spectra by this proposed method with extreme environment stray light is 99.98% similar to the spectra without the environment's stray light. This result shows that we can measure the reflectance spectra without the affection of the environment's stray light. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spectrometer" title="spectrometer">spectrometer</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stray%20light" title=" stray light"> stray light</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=three-parameter%20sine%20curve%20fitting" title=" three-parameter sine curve fitting"> three-parameter sine curve fitting</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=spectra%20extraction" title=" spectra extraction"> spectra extraction</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/138998/stray-light-reduction-methodology-by-a-sinusoidal-light-modulation-and-three-parameter-sine-curve-fitting-algorithm-for-a-reflectance-spectrometer" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/138998.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">248</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">909</span> Symbolic Computation via Grobner Basis</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Haohao%20Wang">Haohao Wang</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The purpose of this paper is to find elimination ideals via Grobner basis. Rapidly increasing water requests can be supported provided that further uses of a river course are not totally compromised, and environmental features are protected as well. Strictly speaking, a water concession can be considered a continuous drawing from the source and causes a mean annual streamflow reduction. Therefore, deciding if a water concession is appropriate or inappropriate seems to be easily solved by comparing the generic demand to the mean annual streamflow value at disposal. Still, the immediate shortcoming for such a comparison is that streamflow data are information available only for few catchments and, most often, limited to specific sites. Subsequently, comparing the generic water demand to mean daily discharge is indeed far from being completely satisfactory since the mean daily streamflow is greater than the water withdrawal for a long period of a year. Consequently, such a comparison appears to be of little significance in order to preserve the quality and the quantity of the river. In order to overcome such a limit, this study aims to complete the information provided by flow duration curves introducing a link between Flow Duration Curves (FDCs) and recession curves and aims to show the chronological sequence of flows with a particular focus on low flow data. The analysis is carried out on 25 catchments located in North-Eastern Italy for which daily data are provided. The results identify groups of catchments as hydrologically homogeneous, having the lower part of the FDCs (corresponding streamflow interval is streamflow Q between 300 and 335, namely: Q(300), Q(335)) smoothly reproduced by a common recession curve. In conclusion, the results are useful to provide more reliable answers to water request, especially for those catchments which show similar hydrological response and can be used for a focused regionalization approach on low flow data. A mathematical link between streamflow duration curves and recession curves is herein provided, thus furnishing streamflow duration curves information upon a temporal sequence of data. In such a way, by introducing assumptions on recession curves, the chronological sequence upon low flow data can also be attributed to FDCs, which are known to lack this information by nature. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chronological%20sequence%20of%20discharges" title="chronological sequence of discharges">chronological sequence of discharges</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=recession%20curves" title=" recession curves"> recession curves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=streamflow%20duration%20curves" title=" streamflow duration curves"> streamflow duration curves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=water%20concession" title=" water concession"> water concession</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/131516/flow-duration-curves-and-recession-curves-connection-through-a-mathematical-link" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/131516.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">186</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">905</span> Weighted G2 Multi-Degree Reduction of Bezier Curves</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Salisu%20ibrahim">Salisu ibrahim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Abdalla%20Rababah"> Abdalla Rababah</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this research, we use Weighted G2-Multi-degree reduction of Bezier curve of degree n to a Bezier curve of degree m, m < n. In general, buildings in hot and humid climates spend more than 60% of the total energy cost for the functionality of the air conditioning (AC) system. Hence, it is required to install energy efficient AC systems or integrate energy recovery systems for both new and/or existing AC systems whenever possible, to reduce the energy consumption by the AC system. Integrate a Rotary Thermal Wheel as the energy recovery device of an existing AC system has shown very promising with attractive payback periods of less than 5 years. A rotary thermal wheel can be located in the Air Handling Unit (AHU) of a central AC system to recover the energy available in the return air stream. During this study, a sensitivity analysis was performed using a CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software to determine the optimum design parameters (i.e., rotary speed and parameters of the matrix profile) of a rotary thermal wheel for hot and humid climates. The simulations were performed for a sinusoidal matrix geometry. Variation of sinusoidal matrix parameters, i.e., span length and height, were also analyzed to understand the heat exchanging performance and the induced pressure drop due to the air flow. The results show that the heat exchanging performance increases when increasing the wheel rpm. However, the performance increment rate decreases when increasing the rpm. As a result, it is more advisable to operate the wheel at 10-20 rpm. For the geometry, it was found that the sinusoidal geometries with lesser spans and higher heights have higher heat exchanging capabilities. Considering the sinusoidal profiles analyzed during the study, the geometry with 4mm height and 3mm width shows better performance than the other combinations. <p
