Since, most of the conventional modes of cancer treatment focus on just inhibiting the rapid growth and division of cancer cells without targeting any specific key factor, their therapeutic efficiency is compromised. In most cases this can be attributed to the simultaneous nonspecific side effects caused by the chemotherapeutic agents or exposure to high energy radiations. Conversely, the targeted therapy is aimed to impair the expression or function of already identified molecule that may be responsible for carcinogenesis. This novel approach may involve formulation and application of specifically designed biopharmaceuticals or nano-engineered enzymes. The multifactorial etiology and symptomatic manifestation of cancer necessitates the administration of multidimensional treatment methods, either alone or in combination. The most important types of oncology therapy include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgical excision of the tumour, immunotherapy and/or alternative medicines. It is difficult to say which one of these types of therapy is most preferable and effective. Hence, the physician may choose to apply one or a combination of therapies depending upon the nature and stage of the disease. Previously, stem-cell transplants were referred to as “bone marrow transplants”, as the stem cells were harvested from the bone marrow. Today, stem cells are harvested from the blood instead of the bone marrow, and are therefore termed stem cell transplants. Stem cell transplantation involves administration of large doses of chemo or radiotherapy in order to eliminate cancer in the bone marrow, and then restoring the normal blood cell production, by replacing the unhealthy blood cells with healthy ones. Peritoneal cancer is also called peritoneal surface malignancy (PSM), peritoneal metastases, peritoneal carcinomatosis, or pseudomyxomaperitonei (PMP). Peritoneal cancer is usually confused with ovarian cancer, as the outer layer of ovaries is covered with epithelial tissue. Primary peritoneal cancer is more frequent in women than in men; women at the risk of ovarian cancer are also at an increased risk of peritoneal cancer, especially if they have BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations. Old age is another predisposing factor for peritoneal cancer. The plasma cells after myeloma becomes cancerous and multiplies, lost infection fighting property.The myeloma cells commonly produce substances that cause bone destruction, leading to bone pain and/or fractures. Loss of appetite, bone pain and fever are the symptoms which may not be present.
