He served as Deputy Vice President and Dean for Research and Development until his recent election as the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Since the outbreak of the coronavirus, Prof. Porgador has led the interdisciplinary Corona Task Force established by BGU President, Prof. Daniel Chamovitz. He also heads a team of University researchers who have developed a new COVID-19 pooling test that identifies all positive subjects, including asymptomatic carriers, in a single round of testing, ultimately helping to prevent the spread of the disease by identifying these patients sooner and at a lower cost using significantly fewer tests. Prof. Porgador is a world renowned researcher in cancer and viral infections. His research focuses on innate immunity of health and disease. In much broader terms, he also investigates prolongation of protein lifespans in a host and the direct killing of tumor cells. He has published more than 130 papers in scientific journals. He holds a B.A with honors in basic medical sciences and an additional B.A in Computer Science and Mathematics from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He completed his M.A and Ph.D. in Life Sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science. His postdoctoral fellowship was at Duke University and the American Institutes of Health (NIH). Porgador has served as President of the Israel Immunological Society and as the President of the Israeli Society for Cancer Research. In his role as Dean, he intends to position the faculty as a leader both in Israel and worldwide, strengthen research and recruit outstanding faculty members. In 1986, I moved to the Laboratory of Immunoregulation (Head: Anthony S. Fauci) at the NIAID, NIH, focusing on the role of cytokines as regulators of HIV latency and replication for which we established some of the earliest in vitro models for which I received the NIH Award of Merit in 1992 and the ESCI Award in 1999. In 1994, I was appointed Head of the AIDS Immunopathogenesis Unit (renamed in 2021 as “Human Immuno-Virology, H.I.V.”) at the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milano. In 2002, I became Associate Professor of Pathology at the San Raffaele University School of Medicine in Milano (promoted to Full Professor in 2016) while maintaining the role of research Unit Head. I am or have been Associate Editor/Editorial Board of several scientific journals (PlosOne, AIDS, J. of Immunology, Frontiers series, etc.). Thus far, I have authored or co-authored 244 indexed scientific publications plus additional 40 papers (174 original articles and 110 reviews/book chapters/editorials) collecting 11.993 citations and an h-index of 58 (source: Scopus). I have also co-edited two books on “Human Retroviruses. Methods and Protocols” and “HIV Reservoirs. Dr. Agrawal has been an invited speaker to many prestigious national and international scientific meetings. Dr. Agrawal is serving on the position of Secretary General and Treasurer of the International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences - North American section, and the Director and Treasurer of the Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences Foundation USA, Inc. Dr. Agrawal has served on many grants review panels, including VA Merit Review, DoD, NIH-NIAID, NIH-NHLBI, MRC-UK and US-Israel BSF Grant Review Committees, Science Foundation Ireland, Austrian Science Fund, British Lung Foundation, Swiss NSF, ViCi Netherlands, and Asthma Research Foundation of Western Australia. His major research areas include the cellular, molecular and immunobiology of diabetes and diabetic foot ulcers, renal diseases, allergy and bronchial asthma, vascular diseases, shoulder rotator cuff injuries, and traumatic brain injury. Dr. Agrawal has trained >200 medical students (who are now academic physician-scientists), directly supervised and guided 72 graduate students to earn MD-PhD, MD-MS, MS, and Ph, degrees, 75 post-doctoral fellows, 15 assistant professors, many of whom are currently on high positions in academia and industries.
