One option is to bring them to their deployment site on board a ship, partially assembled, then put them together on location. Doing that kind of work on the pitching deck of a ship can be challenging, however, and requires crews to stay out at sea longer. Another option involves towing them from shore in their final, vertical orientation, but this requires an uninterrupted channel of deep water, and limits the speed at which they can be transported. Now, Norwegian company WindFlip is developing an alternative method that can accommodate shallow water, while allowing for relatively high transport speeds and a minimum amount of time spent putting the turbines in place. <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/windflip-offshore-wind-turbine-transport/20994/">Read More</a> </p> </div> </div> <div class="summary_item "> <div class="summary_details"> <div class="sd_top"> </div> <div class="clear_both"> <h2><a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/wakawaka-solar-led-lamp/20978/">WakaWaka solar led lamp aims to light up Kenyan school</a></h2> <div class="summary_details_left"> <p>By <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/author/bridget-borgobello/">Bridget Borgobello</a></p> <p><em>04:19 January 2, 2012</em></p> </div> <div class="summary_details_right"> <p><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20120104092918im_/http://images.gizmag.com/layout/icons/comments.png" alt=""/> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/wakawaka-solar-led-lamp/20978/#comments">6 Comments</a> </p> <p><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20120104092918im_/http://images.gizmag.com/layout/icons/image_modernist.png" alt=""/> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/wakawaka-solar-led-lamp/20978/pictures">12 Pictures</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <center><a class="noback" href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/wakawaka-solar-led-lamp/20978/"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20120104092918im_/http://images.gizmag.com/hero/wakawaka.jpg" title="WakaWaka is a solar charged, portable LED lamp concept " alt="WakaWaka is a solar charged, portable LED lamp concept "/></a></center> <div class="summary"> <p>Although we have entered 2012 approximately 1.5 billion people around the globe remain without access to a stable or safe source of light. Even for less green-conscious consumers this lost energy can add up on the electric bill each month, so disconnecting unused devices is really a good habit for anyone to get into. But let's be honest, it's hard to remember to unplug each gadget every single time it's used. To help with this, designers have created the PumPing Tap, a concept electrical socket that can detect an unused power cord and physically eject it from the wall. <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/pumping-tap-concept/20975/">Read More</a> </p> </div> </div> <div class="summary_item "> <div class="summary_details"> <div class="sd_top"> </div> <div class="clear_both"> <h2><a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/cep-removes-heavy-metals-from-water/20956/">New technique removes even trace amounts of heavy metals from water</a></h2> <div class="summary_details_left"> <p>By <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/author/ben-coxworth/">Ben Coxworth</a></p> <p><em>16:24 December 28, 2011</em></p> </div> <div class="summary_details_right"> <p><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20120104092918im_/http://images.gizmag.com/layout/icons/comments.png" alt=""/> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/cep-removes-heavy-metals-from-water/20956/#comments">7 Comments</a> </p> <p><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20120104092918im_/http://images.gizmag.com/layout/icons/image_modernist.png" alt=""/> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/cep-removes-heavy-metals-from-water/20956/pictures">2 Pictures</a></p> </div> </div> </div> <center><a class="noback" href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/cep-removes-heavy-metals-from-water/20956/"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20120104092918im_/http://images.gizmag.com/hero/cep.jpg" title="A new process has been developed for removing trace amounts of heavy metals from water (Ph..." alt="A new process has been developed for removing trace amounts of heavy metals from water (Ph..."/></a></center> <div class="summary"> <p>Once released into the environment from industrial sources, trace amounts of heavy metals can remain present in waterways for decades, or even centuries, in concentrations that are still high enough to pose a health risk. The marine aquatic plant consists of a long skinny-but-tough stem (or stipe) that is anchored to the sea floor and topped with a hollow float, from which a number of "leaves" (or blades) extend to the surface. The result is a seaweed that extends vertically up through the water column, continuously swaying back and forth with the surging waves. The researchers at Australia's BioPower Systems evidently looked at that kelp, and thought, "what if we could use that swaying action to generate power?" The result was their envisioned bioWAVE system, which could soon become a reality, thanks to a just-announced AUD&#36;5 million (US&#36;5.1 million) grant from the Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources. <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/biopower-biowave-kelp-wave-power/20733/">Read More</a> </p> </div> </div> <center class="snap_noshots"> <div class="next_prev"><strong> <span>1</span> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/ecogizmo/2/">2</a> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/ecogizmo/3/">3</a> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/ecogizmo/4/">4</a> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/ecogizmo/5/">5</a> <a href="/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/ecogizmo/2/">Next </a> &#187; </strong></div> </center> <div class="dotsontop"> <!-- Google Search Box --> <div id="search_form_bottom"> <form action="https://web.archive.org/web/20120104092918/http://www.gizmag.com/search/" id="cse-search-box-bottom"> <span class="title">Looking for something?
