The Greek word for "instructed" is "katecheo," which implies a systematic teaching or catechism. This suggests that Apollos had a foundational understanding of Christian doctrine, likely through oral tradition or early Christian teachers. The "way of the Lord" refers to the teachings and life of Jesus Christ, emphasizing the path of righteousness and salvation. Historically, this reflects the early Christian community's efforts to educate new believers in the faith, ensuring they understood the core tenets of Christianity.
and was fervent in spirit
The term "fervent" comes from the Greek "zeo," meaning to boil with heat or to be hot. This indicates Apollos' passionate and enthusiastic nature in his spiritual life. "Spirit" here can refer to both the human spirit and the Holy Spirit, suggesting that Apollos was deeply moved and guided by his faith. This fervency is a model for believers, demonstrating the importance of zeal and dedication in one's spiritual journey. Historically, fervency was crucial for the spread of Christianity, as passionate individuals like Apollos played a significant role in evangelism and teaching.
he spoke and taught accurately about Jesus
The phrase "spoke and taught accurately" highlights Apollos' ability to communicate the truths about Jesus with precision and correctness. The Greek word "akribos" means exact or careful, indicating that Apollos was meticulous in his teaching. This accuracy is essential in preserving the integrity of the Gospel message. In the early church, accurate teaching was vital to prevent heresies and misunderstandings about Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Apollos' role as a teacher underscores the importance of sound doctrine and the responsibility of teachers to convey the truth faithfully.
though he knew only the baptism of John
This phrase reveals a limitation in Apollos' understanding. The "baptism of John" refers to the baptism of repentance preached by John the Baptist, which prepared the way for Jesus but did not encompass the full revelation of Christian baptism in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This indicates that Apollos' knowledge was incomplete, lacking the full understanding of the Holy Spirit's role and the new covenant established through Jesus' death and resurrection. This context highlights the transitional period of the early church, where believers were moving from the old covenant to the new, and the need for further instruction and revelation.
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(25) This man was instructed in the way of the Lord.--Better, had been instructed. The verb is the same as that used in Luke 1:1 (where see Note), and was afterwards used technically in the form of Catechumen to describe the status of a convert preparing for baptism. The "way of the Lord" is used in a half-technical sense, as in the phrase "those of the way" (see Note on Acts 9:2), as equivalent to what, in modern speech, we should describe as the "religion" of Christ.
And being fervent in the spirit.--The noun is obviously used, as in the identical phrase in Romans 12:11, for the spirit of the man, not for the Holy Spirit of God.
He spake and taught diligently.--Better, he was speaking and teaching accurately. Both verbs are in the tense which implies continuous action.
The things of the Lord.--The better MSS. give, "the things concerning Jesus." We ask in what the teaching, which is thus described as accurate, was yet defective. The position of Apollos at this stage was, it would seem, that of one who knew the facts of our Lord's life, and death, and resurrection, and had learnt, comparing these with Messianic prophecies, to accept Him as the Christ. But his teacher had been one who had not gone beyond the standpoint of the followers of the Baptist, who accepted Jesus as the Christ during His ministry on earth. The Christ was for him the head of a glorified Judaism, retaining all its distinctive features. He had not as yet learnt that "circumcision was nothing" (1Corinthians 7:19; Galatians 5:6), and that the Temple and all its ordinances were "decaying and waxing old, and ready to vanish away" (<a href="/hebrews/8-13.htm" title="In that he said, A new covenant, he has made the first old. It is difficult at first sight to conceive how at this time any one could know the baptism of John without knowing further that of Christ. But a possible account of it is that Apollos living at Alexandria, where as yet there was no Christian Church. had met some Jews who had been in Judaea at the time of John's ministry, and had heard from them of John's baptism and preaching, and of his testimony to Jesus as the Messiah, but had had no further opportunity of careful instruction in the faith of Jesus Christ till he happened to come to Ephesus and make the acquaintance of his compatriots, Aquila and Priscilla. They hearing him speak with fervor and eloquence, but perceiving that his knowledge was imperfect, immediately invited him to their house, and instructed him in the fullness of the truth of the gospel. This necessarily included the doctrine of Christian baptism, which we cannot doubt was administered to him (John 1:33; Acts 1:5; Acts 2:38).

Parallel Commentaries ...

Greek
He
οὗτος (houtos)
Demonstrative Pronoun - Nominative Masculine Singular
Strong's 3778: This; he, she, it.

had been
ἦν (ēn)
Verb - Imperfect Indicative Active - 3rd Person Singular
Strong's 1510: I am, exist.
