Let him proclaim<MH7121> and declare<MH5046> it; <t><p class="indent1">And, let him confront<MH6186a> Me <t><p class="indent1"><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>Beginning with My establishing<MH7760> of the ancient<MH5769> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>nation<MH5971a>. <t><p class="indent1">Then let them declare<MH5046> to them the things<MH857> that are coming<MH857> <t><p class="indent1">And <i>the events</i> that are going to take<MH935> place<MH935>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>‘Do not tremble<MH6342> and do not be<MH3385a> afraid<MH3385a>; <t><p class="indent1">Have I not long<MH3975b> since<MH3975b> announced<MH8085> <i>it</i> to you and declared<MH5046> <i>it?</i> <t><p class="indent1">And you are My witnesses<MH5707>. <t><p class="indent1">Is<MH3426> there<MH3426> any<MH3426> God<MH433> besides<MH4480, 1107> Me, <t><p class="indent1">Or is there any <i>other</i> Rock<MH6697>? <t><p class="indent1">I know<MH3045> of none<MH1077>.’” <p class="hdg">The Foolishness of Idolatry</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Those who fashion<MH3335> an idol<MH6459> are all<MH3605> futile<MH8414>, and their treasured<MH2530> things<MH2530> are of no<MH1077> benefit<MH3276>; even their own witnesses<MH5707> fail<MH1077> to see<MH7200> or know<MH3045>, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> they will be put<MH954> to<MH954> shame<MH954>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Who<MH4310> has fashioned<MH3335> a god<MH410> or cast<MH5258a> an idol<MH6459> to no<MH1115> benefit<MH3276>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Behold<MH2005>, all<MH3605> his companions<MH2270> will be put<MH954> to<MH954> shame<MH954>, for the craftsmen<MH2796> themselves<MH1992a> are mere<MH4480> men<MH120>. Let them all<MH3605> assemble<MH6908> themselves, let them stand<MH5975> up, let them tremble<MH6342>, let them be put<MH954> to<MH954> shame<MH954> together<MH3162>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>The craftsman<MH2796> of iron<MH1270> <i>shapes</i> a cutting<MH4621> tool<MH4621> and does<MH6466> his work<MH6466> over the coals<MH6352>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>fashioning<MH3335> it with hammers<MH4717> and working<MH6466> it with his strong<MH3581b> arm<MH2220>. He also<MH1571> gets<MH7456> hungry<MH7456> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>his strength<MH3581b> fails<MH369>; he drinks<MH8354> no<MH3808> water<MH4325> and becomes<MH3286> weary<MH3286>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>The craftsman<MH2796> of wood<MH6086> extends<MH5186> a measuring<MH6957b> line<MH6957b>; he outlines<MH8388b> it with a marker<MH8279>. He works<MH6213a> it with carving<MH4741> knives<MH4741> and outlines<MH8388b> it with a compass<MH4230>, and makes<MH6213a> it like the form<MH8403> of a man<MH376>, like the beauty<MH8597> of mankind<MH120>, so that it may sit<MH3427> in a house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>He will cut<MH3772> cedars<MH730> for himself, and he takes<MH3947> a holm-oak<MH8645> or <i>another</i> oak<MH437> and lets <i>it</i> grow<MH553> strong<MH553> for himself among the trees<MH6086> of the forest<MH3293a>. He plants<MH5193> a laurel<MH766> tree<MH766>, and the rain<MH1653> makes<MH1431> it grow<MH1431>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then it becomes<MH1961> <i>something</i> for a person<MH120> to burn<MH1197a>, so he takes<MH3947> one of them and gets<MH2552> warm<MH2552>; he also<MH637> makes<MH5400> a<MH5400> fire<MH5400> and bakes<MH644> bread<MH3899>. He also<MH637> makes<MH6466> a god<MH410> and worships<MH2331c> it; he makes<MH6213a> it a carved<MH6459> image<MH6459> and bows<MH5456> down<MH5456> before it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Half<MH2677> of it he burns<MH8313> in the fire<MH784>; over<MH5921> <i>this</i> half<MH2677> he eats<MH398> meat<MH1320>, he roasts<MH6740> a roast<MH6748>, and is<MH7646> satisfied<MH7646>. He also<MH637> warms<MH2552> himself and says<MH559>, “Aha<MH1889>! I am<MH2552> warm<MH2552>, I have seen<MH7200> the fire<MH217>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Yet the rest<MH7611> of it he makes<MH6213a> into a god<MH410>, his carved<MH6459> image<MH6459>. He bows<MH5456> down<MH5456> before it and worships<MH2331c>; he also prays<MH6419> to it and says<MH559>, “Save<MH5337> me, for you are my god<MH410>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>They do not know<MH3045>, nor<MH3808> do they understand<MH995>, for He has smeared<MH2911b> over<MH2911b> their eyes<MH5869> so<MH4480> that<MH4480> they cannot<MH4480> see<MH7200>, and their hearts<MH3820> so<MH4480> that<MH4480> they cannot<MH4480> comprehend<MH7919a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>No<MH3808> one <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>remembers<MH7725, 413, 3820>, nor<MH3808> is there knowledge<MH1847> or understanding<MH8394> to say<MH559>, “I have burned<MH8313> half<MH2677> of it in the fire<MH784> and also<MH637> have baked<MH644> bread<MH3899> over<MH5921> its coals<MH1513>. I roast<MH6740> meat<MH1320> and eat<MH398> <i>it.</i> Then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>I make<MH6213a> the rest<MH3499a> of it into an abomination<MH8441>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>I bow<MH5456> down<MH5456> before a block<MH944> of wood<MH6086>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>feeds<MH7462a> on ashes<MH665>; a deceived<MH8524> heart<MH3820> has misled<MH5186> him. And he cannot<MH3808> save<MH5337> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>himself<MH5315>, nor<MH3808> say<MH559>, “Is there not a lie<MH8267> in my right<MH3225> hand<MH3225>?” <p class="hdg">God Forgives and Redeems</p><poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>“Remember<MH2142> these<MH428> things<MH428>, Jacob<MH3290>, <t><p class="indent1">And Israel<MH3478>, for you are My servant<MH5650>; <t><p class="indent1">I have formed<MH3335> you, you are My servant<MH5650>, <t><p class="indent1">Israel<MH3478>, you will not be forgotten<MH5382> by Me. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>“I have wiped<MH4229a> out<MH4229a> your wrongdoings<MH6588> like a thick<MH5645> cloud<MH5645> <t><p class="indent1">And your sins<MH2403b> like a <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>heavy<MH6051> mist<MH6051>. <t><p class="indent1">Return<MH7725> to Me, for I have redeemed<MH1350> you.” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/44-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Shout<MH7442> for<MH7442> joy<MH7442>, you heavens<MH8064>, for the LORD<MH3068> has done<MH6213a> <i>it!</i> <t><p class="indent1">Shout<MH7321> joyfully<MH7321>, you lower<MH8482> parts<MH8482> of the earth<MH776>;
