It also presents a basic explanation of the regulations that govern the program. The purpose of this page is to provide a useful and usable explanation of the New York State Sign Program. New York State has approximately l6,400 miles of State highways, over which more than 10 million vehicles travel a total of approximately 350,000,000 miles per year. Not only do New York State residents use our highways but large numbers of visitors travel our State each year. The sign program, pursuant to Federal laws, is designed to accomplish three major goals: </P> <DIV class=content-list> <OL> <LI>Provide information to the traveling public concerning the many amenities and attractions in New York State <LI>Maintain the scenic beauty of New York, its highways, and communities <LI>Assist the traveling public, while maintaining the safe and efficient flow of traffic on the State's highways</LI></OL></DIV> <P>This information is not merely a restatement of the regulations. The regulations governing the sign program are lengthy and involved. While sign applicants must conform to all applicable regulations, both local and State, DOT hopes this information will promote a better understanding and use of the Sign Program. Should the need arise, copies of the regulations are available at the Department Of Transportation's (DOT) Office of Real Estate in Albany, or from the department's regional real estate offices. </P> <P>The following information is presented as a guide for the public in determining which sign would be most appropriate for their needs, and the general regulations and procedures with which the applicant must conform. When an inquiry and/or application for a sign is received, DOT staff will assist in the process and determination.
