Its frequent occurrence in both the Old and New Testaments underscores its spiritual and cultural significance in biblical literature.

Old Testament

1. Creation: The concept of seven is introduced in the creation narrative. God created the world in six days and rested on the seventh, sanctifying it as a day of rest (Genesis 2:2-3). This established the seven-day week and the Sabbath, a day of rest and worship.

2. Noah's Ark: In the account of Noah, God instructed Noah to take seven pairs of clean animals and birds into the ark (Genesis 7:2-3). This number signifies completeness in God's provision for the preservation of life.

3. Feasts and Rituals: The number seven is integral to Israel's religious calendar. The Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Feast of Tabernacles each last seven days (Exodus 12:15; Leviticus 23:34). The Day of Atonement occurs in the seventh month (Leviticus 16:29).

4. Jericho: The Israelites marched around Jericho for seven days, and on the seventh day, they circled the city seven times before the walls fell (Joshua 6:3-4). This event highlights the number seven as a symbol of divine intervention and victory.

5. Solomon's Temple: The construction of Solomon's Temple took seven years (1 Kings 6:38). The dedication of the temple included a seven-day feast (1 Kings 8:65), emphasizing the temple's role as a place of complete worship.

New Testament

1. Jesus' Teachings: Jesus often used the number seven in His teachings. He instructed Peter to forgive "seventy times seven" times, illustrating boundless forgiveness (Matthew 18:22).

2. Miracles and Signs: The Gospel of John records seven miraculous signs performed by Jesus, each revealing His divine authority and identity (e.g., turning water into wine, John 2:1-11).

3. Revelation: The Book of Revelation is replete with the number seven, symbolizing the fullness of God's plan. There are seven churches, seven seals, seven trumpets, and seven bowls (Revelation 1:4, 5:1, 8:2, 16:1). These sevens represent the completeness of God's judgment and redemption.

4. Seven Spirits: Revelation also mentions the "seven Spirits of God" (Revelation 4:5), often interpreted as the fullness of the Holy Spirit's presence and work.

Symbolism and Interpretation

In biblical numerology, seven is often seen as the number of divine perfection and completion. The influence of the number seven was not restricted to the Hebrews; it prevailed among the Persians, ancient Indians, Greeks and Romans. The peculiarity of the Hebrew view consists in the special dignity of the seventh, and not simply in that of seen. The Sabbath being the seventh day suggested the adoption of seven as the coefficient, so to say, for their appointment of all sacred periods; and we thus find the 7th month ushered in by the Feast of Trumpets, and signalized by the celebration of the Feast of Tabernacles and the Great Day of Atonement; 7 weeks as the interval between the Passover and the Pentecost; the 7th year as the sabbatical year; and the year: succeeding 7X7 years as the Jubilee year. Seven days were appointed as the length of the feasts of Passover and Tabernacles; 7 days for the ceremonies of the consecration of priests, and so on; 7 victims to be offered on any special occasion, as in Balaam's sacrifice. (Numbers 23:1) and especially at the ratification of a treaty, the notion of seven being embodied in the very term signifying to swear, literally meaning to do seven times. (Genesis 31:28) Seven is used for any round number, or for completeness, as we say a dozen, or as a speaker says he will say two or three words.
ATS Bible Dictionary
Seven
As from the beginning this was the number of days in the week, so it often has in Scripture a sort of emphasis attached to it, and is very generally used as a round or perfect number. Clean beasts were taken into the ark by sevens, Genesis 7:1-24. The years of plenty and famine in Egypt were marked by sevens, Genesis 41:1-57. With the Jews, not only was there a seventh day Sabbath, but every seventh year was a Sabbath, and after every seven times seven years came a jubilee. Their great feasts of unleavened bread and of tabernacles were observed for seven days; the number of animals in many of their sacrifices was limited to seven. The golden candlestick had seven branches. Seven priests with seven trumpets went around the walls of Jericho seven days, and seven times on the seventh day. In the Apocalypse we find seven churches mentioned, seven candlesticks, seven spirits, seven stars, seven seals, seven trumpets, seven thunders, seven vials, seven plagues, and seven angels to pour them out.

Seven is often put for any round or whole number, just as we use "ten" or "a dozen;" so in Matthew 12:45 1 Samuel 2:5 Job 5:19 Proverbs 26:16,25 Isaiah 4:1 Jeremiah 15:9. On the seventh day God rested, and hallowed it (Genesis 2:2, 3). The division of time into weeks of seven days each accounts for many instances of the occurrence of this number. This number has been called the symbol of perfection, and also the symbol of rest. "Jacob's seven years' service to Laban; Pharaoh's seven fat oxen and seven lean ones; the seven branches of the golden candlestick; the seven trumpets and the seven priests who sounded them; the seven days' siege of Jericho; the seven churches, seven spirits, seven stars, seven seals, seven vials, and many others, sufficiently prove the importance of this sacred number" (see Leviticus 25:4; 1 Samuel 2:5; Psalm 12:6; 79:12; Proverbs 26:16; Isaiah 4:1; Matthew 18:21, 22; Luke 17:4). In such passages as Daniel 12:1 and Acts 12:15 it would seem that the angel was generally regarded as a superhuman being whose duty it was to guard a nation or an individual, not unlike the jenei of the Arabs. However, in Malachi 2:7, 3:1 (Hebrew) the word is clearly used to represent men. In the New Testament also, there are passages, such as James 2:25 (Greek), in which the word seems to be applied to men. The seven angels of the seven churches (Revelation 1:20) received seven letters, figurative letters, and therefore it would seem that the seven angels are also figurative and may refer to the seven bishops who presided over the seven churches of Asia.
