London Euston. This meant that <a href="https://www.networkrail.co.uk/communities/passengers/our-stations/london-euston/">London Euston Station</a>, which opened in 1837 and was known for its grand design by Philip Hardwick, had to be demolished and rebuilt to create space for the new overhead equipment. These include <a href="https://eastwestrail.co.uk/">East West Rail</a> which will connect Oxford with Cambridge, and <a href="https://www.hs2.org.uk/">HS2</a>, a new railway connecting London with Birmingham and the North of England. Alongside this, we’re continually investing into the railway, carrying out routine maintenance to help provide the best service to passengers.</p> <div class="tw-mb-8"> <card-link title="East West Rail project page" description="" link="https://www.networkrail.co.uk/running-the-railway/railway-upgrade-plan/key-projects/east-west-rail/" is-first-element class="card-link" ></card-link> </div> <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Performance improvement plan</h2> <p>Our performance improvement plan was introduced in November 2019, to identify where changes could be made to the railway infrastructure, to help improve service and reliability for our passengers. From 2020 to 2022, we will be making sure each project scheme is delivered on time, on budget and brings lasting improvements in performance and service for passengers and freight customers. Our goal is to provide an exceptional passenger journey experience through a railway that is on time at every calling point for every service. Against the backdrop of improvements, our priority remains to deliver a safe and reliable railway. On the West Coast South route in particular, Project Alpha will be investing £100m into this section of railway to implement change.</p> <h3 class="wp-block-heading">There are several areas our plan <accordion-item v-for="(item, i) in [{"is_icon":false,"icon":"","title":"Case study one: Kilsby tunnel","description":"<p>In May 2020 we agreed a plan with our passenger and freight train partners to shut the West Coast main line for two weeks at Kilsby Tunnel, near Daventry, Northamptonshire, to replace tracks and improve drainage at this known flooding hotspot. This job was long overdue. Access to this ordinarily busy stretch of line had previously proved impossible due to train companies wanting to continue running services even at reduced speeds. Getting this work done enabled us to lift longstanding speed restrictions, improving journey times and service reliability for years to come. While the line was shut we carried out around 250 additional maintenance jobs, including cutting back trackside shrubs and upkeep of overhead electric wires. We removed the red tape and planning timelines and developed a robust plan in collaboration with all operators to allow these works to take place, saving millions of pounds of tax payers money, removing the burden for travellers returning post Covid and building a culture that the railway has needed for decades.<\/p>\n"},{"is_icon":false,"icon":"","title":"Case study two: High priority rerailing at Euston","description":"<p>A project of high priority rerailing on the approach to London Euston to remove rail defects and improve track quality will reduce delays to passengers. Every few months this section of track often suffers from problems, meaning we would either have to block all the lines at short notice, or undertake hugely disruptive large-scale rerailing work. By sorting out these high priority sites now, we keep disruption during maintenance and avoid having to do major work later on. Improving track condition on the busy Euston line will reduce the need for temporary speed limits, some as slow as 20mph. Our work is crucial to facilitate the new high speed line. Investing in HS2 will create much needed rail capacity, providing more local, regional and intercity services.
