to investigate the growth performance, haematology and serum biochemistry indices of broiler birds fed diets containing Neem leaf meal. A total of 96 unsexed day-old broiler birds were allocated to four treatments of T1, T2, T3 and T4 and replicated three times with eight birds per replicate in a Completely Randomized Design. The treatments were diets containing 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 and 8.0% Neem leaf meal respectively. Growth performances, packed cell volume, red blood cell count, haemoglobin, white blood cell count, lymphocytes, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration, platelet count, aspartate amino transaminase, alanine amino transaminase, alkaline phosphate, cholesterol, albumin, globulin, urea, glucose, total protein and creatinine were evaluated. Results showed that there were no significant differences (P>0.05) in all the growth performance parameters among the treatments. The results of the experiment showed that there were significant differences (P<0.05) in all the heamatological and serum biochemistry parameters at finisher phases. Mean corpuscular volume, white blood cell count, lymphocytes, red blood cell count, haemoglobin, platelet count, creatinine and triglyceride increased and were highest in treatment two while treatment four had the least values in mean corpuscular volume, urea, white blood cell, haemoglobin and triglyceride. This implies that the levels of inclusion of Neem leaf meal in this experiment did not affect the growth performance of the broiler chicks but the haematological and serum biochemistry indices were affected. Treatment two with a 4% inclusion level of Neem leaf meal has shown the capacity to replace vaccines and antibiotics in broilers due to the positive effects it had on both the haematological and serum biochemistry.
Keywords: leaf meal, broiler, Aziradicta indica, serum biochemistry, haematology
Procedia PDF Downloads 76

3 Factors Affecting English Language Acquisition and Learning for Primary Schools in Nigeria

Authors: Chibuzor Dalmeida

Abstract:
This paper shall discuss the factors affecting English Language Acquisition and Learning for Primary School in Nigeria. Learning English language is a difficult task mostly those at the primary school level. Pupils find it more difficult on vocabulary, grammar and sentence structure, idioms, pronunciation etc. Researchers have discovered the reasons behind these discrepancies and have formulated theories that could be of utmost assistance to English language teachers and students. This paper further looked at the following factors that include Learner Characteristics and Personal Traits, Situational and Environmental Factors, Prior Language Development and Competence and Age and Brain Development. It further recommended that pupils must learn new vocabulary, rules for grammar and sentence structure, idioms, pronunciation. Pupils whose families and communities set high standards for language acquisition learn more quickly than those who do not. Exposure to high-quality programs also essential. Pupils do best when they are allowed to speak their native language.
Keywords: acquisition, affecting, factors, learning
Procedia PDF Downloads 628

2 Effects of Stirring Time and Reinforcement Preheating on the Porosity of Particulate Periwinkle Shell-Aluminium 6063 Metal Matrix Composite (PPS-ALMMC) Produced by Two-Step Casting

Authors: Reginald Umunakwe, Obinna Chibuzor Okoye, Uzoma Samuel Nwigwe, Damilare John Olaleye, Akinlabi Oyetunji

Abstract:
The potential for the development of PPS-AlMMCs as light weight material for industrial applications was investigated. Periwinkle shells were milled and the density of the particles determined. Particulate periwinkle shell of particle size 75碌m was used to reinforce aluminium 6063 alloy at 10wt% filler loading using two-step stir casting technique. The composite materials were stirred for five minutes in a semi-solid state and the stirring time varied as 3, 6 and 9 minutes at above the liquidus temperature. A specimen was also produced with pre-heated filler. The effect of variation in stirring time and reinforcement pre-heating on the porosity of the composite materials was investigated. The results of the analysis show that a composition of reinforcement pre-heating and stirring for 3 minutes produced a composite material with the lowest porosity of 1.05%.
Keywords: composites, periwinkle shell, two-step casting, porosity
Procedia PDF Downloads 349

1 Examining the Factors Impeding the Preservation of African Architectural Heritage

Authors: Okafor Calistus Chibuzor

Abstract:
Preserving African architectural heritage is a multifaceted endeavor that intersects with socio-cultural, economic, and environmental factors. Despite growing recognition of the importance of safeguarding these invaluable cultural assets, numerous challenges persist, hindering effective preservation efforts across the continent. This paper investigates the underlying factors impeding the preservation of African architectural heritage, aiming to provide insights for addressing this critical issue. The study begins with an exploration of the historical background and significance of African architectural heritage, highlighting its rich diversity and cultural significance. The study acknowledges that there is an urgent need to address the threats facing these heritage sites, including urbanization, rapid development, lack of funding, inadequate legal protection, and insufficient public awareness. The primary aim of this research is to identify and analyze the key factors contributing to the deterioration and loss of African architectural heritage, with the objective of formulating strategies to mitigate these challenges. A mixed-use research methodology combining archival research, field surveys, stakeholder interviews, and case studies is employed to gather comprehensive data and insights. The findings reveal a complex interplay of socio-economic, political, and institutional factors shaping the preservation landscape in Africa, including issues related to funding, governance, community engagement, and capacity building. The paper concludes by highlighting the urgent need for coordinated efforts among government agencies, heritage organizations, local communities, and international stakeholders to address the identified challenges and develop sustainable preservation strategies. Recommendations are provided for enhancing legal frameworks, promoting community involvement, fostering public awareness, and mobilizing resources to safeguard Africa's rich architectural heritage for future generations.
Keywords: <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=African%20architectural%20heritage" title="African architectural
