It encompasses behavior, customs, and practices that are often reflective of cultural, religious, or moral standards. The Bible provides numerous examples and teachings regarding the manner in which individuals are to conduct themselves, both in relation to God and to one another.

Old Testament Usage

In the Old Testament, "manner" often pertains to the customs and practices of the Israelites and surrounding nations. For instance, God instructs the Israelites to avoid adopting the manners of pagan nations. In Leviticus 18:3 , God commands, "You must not follow the practices of the land of Egypt, where you used to live, or follow the practices of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. You must not walk in their customs."

The manner of worship and sacrifice is also a significant theme. The Israelites were given specific instructions on how to conduct sacrifices and offerings, emphasizing the importance of following God's prescribed manner. In 1 Chronicles 15:13 , David acknowledges the importance of proper procedure: "For we did not inquire of Him about the proper order."

New Testament Usage

In the New Testament, "manner" often relates to the conduct and behavior expected of believers. Jesus Christ exemplifies the perfect manner of living, serving as a model for His followers. In John 13:15 , Jesus says, "I have set you an example so that you should do as I have done for you," referring to the manner of servitude and humility demonstrated by washing His disciples' feet.

The apostle Paul frequently addresses the manner of life expected of Christians. In Philippians 1:27 , he exhorts believers, "Conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ." This manner of life includes attributes such as love, humility, and unity, as further elaborated in his epistles.

Cultural and Social Manners

The Bible also addresses social manners and customs, providing guidance on interpersonal relationships and community living. In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul discusses the manner of dress and behavior during worship, emphasizing the importance of propriety and respect within the church community.

Furthermore, the manner of speech is highlighted in passages such as Ephesians 4:29 , which instructs, "Let no unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building up the one in need and bringing grace to those who listen."

Spiritual Implications

The manner in which believers live is a reflection of their faith and relationship with God. The Bible encourages a manner of life that is holy and pleasing to God, as seen in 1 Peter 1:15-16 : "But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do, for it is written: 'Be holy, because I am holy.'"

Overall, the concept of "manner" in the Bible encompasses a wide range of behaviors and practices, all of which are intended to align with God's will and reflect His character.
Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary
1.
