Little research, however, has been carried out to examine the role played by gesture in the listener's representation of accumulating information? Do listeners attend to the gestures that accompany narrative speech? In what kinds of relationships between gesture and speech do listeners attend to the gestural channel? If listeners do attend to information received in gesture, how is this information represented-is it 'tagged' as originating in the gestural channel? In this article research is described that addresses these questions. Results show that listeners do attend to information conveyed in gesture, when that information supplements or even contradicts the information conveyed by speech. And information received via gesture is available for retelling in speech. These results are taken to demonstrate that gesture is not taken by the listener to be epiphenomenal to the act of speaking, or a simple manual translation of speech. We use the device of the 'catchment' as the locus around which this integration proceeds. We present a detailed case study of a gesture and speech elicitation experiment in which a subject describes her living space to an interlocutor. First, we process the video data to obtain the motion traces of both of the subject's hands using the Vector Coherence Mapping algorithm. We code the gestures to identify the catchments. We recover discourse purposes utilizing a system of guided questions. Finally, we define prosody in terms of the ToBI system. The results of these analyses are compared against the computed motion traces to identify the cues accessible in the gestural and audio data that correlate well with the psycholinguistic analyses. A first study of two sets of cartoon narrations, one in American English and the other in Mandarin Chinese, shows that they typically display configurational spatial information otherwise absent from the linguistically encoded narrative. This insight is extended in a pair of studies focusing on spatial narratives, the first a study of a set of six route descriptions, and the second a study of twelve living space descriptions, that show how speakers create schematic gestural models of space that persist over discourse time, and serve to contextualize ongoing discourse, and especially ongoing gesture representation. The tight coordination of this unfolding gestural schematic representation with their co-occurring linguistic strings is shown not just in the coordination of gestural “strokes” with linguistic elements, but also in the timing of gestural ‘holds’ with clausal and phrasal units, and in the timing of superimposed ‘beats’ on these gestural holds with lexical units introducing significant new information into the discourse. Finally, an introductory lecture to HPSG is examined, to reveal that exactly the same principles of emergent schematic representation in gesture can take place within a discourse not overtly focused on spatial information. <br /><br />Both gesture moves and lexemes are held to be substructures typically below the level at which the notion of intention may be usefully applied, the level of the socially mediated action. Thus, understanding the contributions that gesture makes to conversation requires that its minimal units be considered in their contexts of use, both linguistic and gestural, just as language forms should be, but with a special form of meaning generation occurring within the gesture space itself. One key task in this research is to determine focal points in the speech signal by analyzing its acoustic-prosodic features. This task requires processing and analysis of an immense amount of data. In order to make the task efficient and less time consuming, algorithms for speech processing are developed to perform automatic feature extraction, parametric representation, and detection of focal points that are usually painstakingly marked by hand. In this paper a method for detecting the focal points in speech prosody is presented and the results are compared with focal points hand-marked by experts. To exploit these modalities in HCI, we need to understand the interplay between them and the way in which they support communication. We propose a framework for the gesture research done to date, and present our work on the cross-modal cues for discourse segmentation in free-form gesticulation accompanying speech in natural conversation as a new paradigm for such multimodal interaction. The basis for this integration is the psycholinguistic concept of the coequal generation of gesture and speech from the same semantic intent. Little research, however, has been carried out to examine the role played by gesture in the listener's representation of accumulating information? Do listeners attend to the gestures that accompany narrative speech? In what kinds of relationships between gesture and speech do listeners attend to the gestural channel? If listeners do attend to information received in gesture, how is this information represented-is it 'tagged' as originating in the gestural channel? In this article research is described that addresses these questions. Results show that listeners do attend to information conveyed in gesture, when that information supplements or even contradicts the information conveyed by speech. And information received via gesture is available for retelling in speech. These results are taken to demonstrate that gesture is not taken by the listener to be epiphenomenal to the act of speaking, or a simple manual translation of speech. We use the device of the 'catchment' as the locus around which this integration proceeds. We present a detailed case study of a gesture and speech elicitation experiment in which a subject describes her living space to an interlocutor. First, we process the video data to obtain the motion traces of both of the subject's hands using the Vector Coherence Mapping algorithm. We code the gestures to identify the catchments. We recover discourse purposes utilizing a system of guided questions. Finally, we define prosody in terms of the ToBI system. The results of these analyses are compared against the computed motion traces to identify the cues accessible in the gestural and audio data that correlate well with the psycholinguistic analyses. A first study of two sets of cartoon narrations, one in American English and the other in Mandarin Chinese, shows that they typically display configurational spatial information otherwise absent from the linguistically encoded narrative. This insight is extended in a pair of studies focusing on spatial narratives, the first a study of a set of six route descriptions, and the second a study of twelve living space descriptions, that show how speakers create schematic gestural models of space that persist over discourse time, and serve to contextualize ongoing discourse, and especially ongoing gesture representation. The tight coordination of this unfolding gestural schematic representation with their co-occurring linguistic strings is shown not just in the coordination of gestural “strokes” with linguistic elements, but also in the timing of gestural ‘holds’ with clausal and phrasal units, and in the timing of superimposed ‘beats’ on these gestural holds with lexical units introducing significant new information into the discourse. Finally, an introductory lecture to HPSG is examined, to reveal that exactly the same principles of emergent schematic representation in gesture can take place within a discourse not overtly focused on spatial information. <br /><br />Both gesture moves and lexemes are held to be substructures typically below the level at which the notion of intention may be usefully applied, the level of the socially mediated action. Thus, understanding the contributions that gesture makes to conversation requires that its minimal units be considered in their contexts of use, both linguistic and gestural, just as language forms should be, but with a special form of meaning generation occurring within the gesture space itself. One key task in this research is to determine focal points in the speech signal by analyzing its acoustic-prosodic features. This task requires processing and analysis of an immense amount of data. In order to make the task efficient and less time consuming, algorithms for speech processing are developed to perform automatic feature extraction, parametric representation, and detection of focal points that are usually painstakingly marked by hand. In this paper a method for detecting the focal points in speech prosody is presented and the results are compared with focal points hand-marked by experts.
