Behold, I am a Philistine and you are Servants of Shaul. Give me a man! We shall fight together!” <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-11.htm#aramaic"><b>11</b></a></span>And Shaul and all Israel heard the words of the Philistine, and they trembled and they were very afraid<p> <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-12.htm#aramaic"><b>12</b></a></span>And David was son of a man, an Ephrathite from Bayth Lekhem of Yehuda, and his name was Iyshay, and he had eight sons, and the man was old and advanced in years in the days of Shaul <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-13.htm#aramaic"><b>13</b></a></span>And the three older sons of Iyshay went after Shaul to battle, and their names: “Elyab the firstborn, his second Abinadab and the third, Shama <A name="15"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-14.htm#aramaic"><b>14</b></a></span>And David was younger <A name="16"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-15.htm#aramaic"><b>15</b></a></span>And David returned from the presence of Shaul, and he went on feeding the sheep of his father in Bayth Lekhem <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-16.htm#aramaic"><b>16</b></a></span>And the Philistine came early and when it became dark, and he remained forty days<p> <A name="18"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-17.htm#aramaic"><b>17</b></a></span>And Iyshay said to David his son: “Take to your brothers a seah of parched corn and ten loaves of bread and run to the encampment to your brothers <A name="19"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-18.htm#aramaic"><b>18</b></a></span>And take to the Commander of a Thousand these ten cheeses of milk and visit your brothers in peace and bring their news to me” <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-19.htm#aramaic"><b>19</b></a></span>And Shaul and all the men of Israel in the valley that is in Temtha were fighting with the Philistines<p> <A name="21"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-20.htm#aramaic"><b>20</b></a></span>And David arose early at dawn and he left the sheep with a Keeper and he picked up and he went on as Iyshay had commanded him, and he came to the encampment in the valley that went out to the ranks, and they cried out for battle <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-21.htm#aramaic"><b>21</b></a></span>And Israel and the Philistines were lined up, row against row <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-22.htm#aramaic"><b>22</b></a></span>And David put the provisions down from him on the side of the provisions, and he ran to the array and he invoked the peace of his brothers <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-23.htm#aramaic"><b>23</b></a></span>And while he was speaking with them, behold the giant went up, the Philistine Gulyath his name, from Gath, from the array of the Philistines and he spoke these words, and David heard<p> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-24.htm#aramaic"><b>24</b></a></span>And all the men of Israel, when they saw the giant, they were afraid, and they fled from before him <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-25.htm#aramaic"><b>25</b></a></span>And the men of Israel said: “Have you seen this man who has come up for the reproach of Israel? The man who will kill him, the King will enrich him with great riches and he will give him his daughter and he shall make the household of his father free in Israel!”<p> <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-26.htm#aramaic"><b>26</b></a></span>And David said to the men who stood with him: “What shall be done to the man who will kill this uncircumcised Philistine and shall take the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine who reproaches the ranks of the living God?” <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-27.htm#aramaic"><b>27</b></a></span>And the people said to him: “According to this statement, thus it shall be done to a man who will kill him”<p> <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-28.htm#aramaic"><b>28</b></a></span>And Elyab his older brother heard when he spoke to the men, and the anger of Elyab was provoked against David, and he said to him: “Why have you come down and with whom have you left these few sheep in the wilderness? I know your rashness and the evil of your heart! It is to see the war that you have come down!” <A name="30"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-29.htm#aramaic"><b>29</b></a></span>And David said: “What have I done now? Behold, this is a speech!” <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-30.htm#aramaic"><b>30</b></a></span>And he turned from his presence to another side and he spoke according to this speech, and the people returned an answer like the first answer<p> <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-31.htm#aramaic"><b>31</b></a></span>And the words that David spoke were reported before Shaul, and he brought him <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-32.htm#aramaic"><b>32</b></a></span>And David said to Shaul: “Do not let the heart of a man fall because of him. I, your Servant, shall go and fight with this Philistine” <A name="34"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-33.htm#aramaic"><b>33</b></a></span>And Shaul said to David: “You cannot go against this Philistine to fight with him, because you are a boy, and he is a man, a warrior from his boyhood!” <A name="35"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-34.htm#aramaic"><b>34</b></a></span>And David said to Shaul: “Your Servant was a Shepherd for my father’s sheep, and a lion came, and a bear, and they picked up a lamb from the flock <A name="36"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-35.htm#aramaic"><b>35</b></a></span>And I went out after it and I struck it and I snatched it from its mouth and it was enraged against me and I caught him by his chin and I struck him and killed him <A name="37"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-36.htm#aramaic"><b>36</b></a></span>Your Servant killed both the lion and the bear. This uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, because he defied the ranks of the living God!” <A name="38"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-37.htm#aramaic"><b>37</b></a></span>And David said: “LORD JEHOVAH who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, he will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine!” And Shaul said to David: “Go, and LORD JEHOVAH be with you!” <A name="39"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-38.htm#aramaic"><b>38</b></a></span>And Shaul clothed David in his armor and put a helmet of brass on his head and clothed him with a breastplate <A name="40"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-39.htm#aramaic"><b>39</b></a></span>And David bound his sword upon his armor and chose not to go, because he had not tested them, and David took them off from him <A name="41"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-40.htm#aramaic"><b>40</b></a></span>And he took his staff in his hand and he chose for himself five smooth stones from the sand and laid them in his Shepherd’s garment in his bag, and his sling was in his hand and he came to the Philistines<p> <A name="42"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-41.htm#aramaic"><b>41</b></a></span>And behold, the Philistine came and drew near to David, and a man bearing a shield before him <A name="43"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-42.htm#aramaic"><b>42</b></a></span>And the Philistine looked out and he saw David and had contempt for him, because he was a ruddy boy and handsome in his appearance <A name="44"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-43.htm#aramaic"><b>43</b></a></span>And the Philistine said to David: “Am I a dog, that you come against me with a rod?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods <A name="45"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-44.htm#aramaic"><b>44</b></a></span>And the Philistine said to David: “Come to me and I shall give your flesh to the birds of the sky and to the beasts of the field!” <A name="46"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-45.htm#aramaic"><b>45</b></a></span>And David said to the Philistine: “You come against me with a sword and with a spear and with a shield, and I am come against you in The Name of LORD JEHOVAH, God of Hosts of the ranks of Israel, whom you have reviled! <A name="47"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/parallel/1_samuel/17-46.htm#aramaic"><b>46</b></a></span>Today LORD JEHOVAH shall deliver you into my hands and I shall kill you and I shall take your head from you, and I shall give the corpses of the camp of the Philistines today to the beasts of the field and to the fowl of the sky, and all the Earth shall know that God is with Israel!
