On the basis of predictions of socioemotional selectivity theory and social convoy theory, we conducted a meta-analysis on age-related social network changes and the effects of life events on social networks using 277 studies with 177,635 participants from adolescence to old age. Cross-sectional as well as longitudinal studies consistently showed that (a) the global social network increased up until young adulthood and then decreased steadily, (b) both the personal network and the friendship network decreased throughout adulthood, (c) the family network was stable in size from adolescence to old age, and (d) other networks with coworkers or neighbors were important only in specific age ranges. Studies focusing on life events that occur at specific ages, such as transition to parenthood, job entry, or widowhood, demonstrated network changes similar to such age-related network changes. Moderator analyses detected that the type of network assessment affected the reported size of global, personal, and family networks. Period effects on network sizes occurred for personal and friendship networks, which have decreased in size over the last 35 years. Together the findings are consistent with the view that a portion of normative, age-related social network changes are due to normative, age-related life events. Data are derived from 2,285 married older adults (born between 1903 and 1937) who participated in face-to-face interviews for the Dutch survey on 'Living arrangements and social networks of older adults ' conducted in 1992. Childhood and adulthood SES were indicated by the father's and own level of education and occupation. Multivariate analyses showed that SES in adulthood has more impact on network features in old age than father's SES. People with low lifetime SES or with downward SES mobility had small networks, low instrumental and emotional support from non-kin, but high instrumental support from kin, when compared with the upwardly mobile or those with high lifetime SES. The level of education was a better indicator of network differences than occupational prestige. It is concluded that obtaining a high SES during life pays off in terms of having more supportive non-kin relationships in old age. The small networks and less supportive non-kin relationships of low-status older adults make them more vulnerable to situations in which kin are unavailable or less willing to provide support. This study underscores the distinction between types of support and types of relationships in the SES-network association. The samples were based in an urban section of inner east London (Hackney) (two samples of people aged 65-84 and 85+ at baseline) and in a semi-rural district of Essex (Braintree) (one sample aged 65-84 at baseline). Most people in ali three samples had a social network, although 14% of the 85+ group had no one in their networks by follow-up. Loss of relatives, friends and confidants was greatest, as would be expected, in the 85+ sample. This older sample not only had weaker networks, and suffered the greatest losses to their networks, but they were also far less likely to be engaged in social activities. The younger Braintree sample members had the greatest degree of involvement in social activities, and they also had stronger network structures. Although most members of all three samples could name a main helper, sizeable proportions (21 and 16% of the younger and older Hackney samples, respectively) reported that they had no helper by follow-up, in comparison with just 5% of Braintree sample members. Both the Hackney samples were more likely than the Braintree sample to report wanting more help. The longitudinal analyses showed evidence of gains, as well as stability and loss, among sizeable proportions of sample members. Even among the 85+ sample, of those with no friends at baseline, 34% reported having friends by follow-up. Gains in friendships were also reported by the two younger sample members. However, gains should not be emphasized at the expense of losses, which were considerable. Network losses were due mainly to loss of relatives, rather than friends. Multivariate analysis confirmed that the greater part of the change in network size was accounted for by changes in numbers of relatives. Increases in network size over the time period analysed were associated with increases in need for help-thus size partly expanded in response to need for help. In the older 85-t sample, increases in network size were associated with poorer functional ability over time. This paper shifts the focus to older adults' tendencies to cultivate new social ties. This process of network growth can improve access to social resources, boost self-esteem, reduce loneliness, and increase physical activity. We therefore examine the link between tie cultivation and health using new longitudinal data from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (NSHAP), which recorded changes in older adults' confidant network rosters over a period of about five years. Most respondents (81.8%) added at least one new network member during the study period, and most (59.4%) cultivated multiple new confidant relationships. Longitudinal analyses suggest that the addition of new confidants is associated with improvements in functional, self-rated, and psychological health, net of baseline connectedness as well as any network losses that occurred during the same period. Network losses were associated with physical but not psychological well-being. We first identify different types of non-kin networks among older adults and second, investigate the association of these types with survival rates. Official register information on mortality is combined with data from the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA). The sample includes 2,440 Dutch respondents aged 54-85 at baseline in 1992 and six follow-ups covering a time span of 20 years. Using latent class analysis, respondents are classified into distinct types of non-kin networks, based on differences in number and variation of non-kin relations, social support received from non-kin, and contact frequency with non-kin.
