fa-caret-down"></i></span></a><span class="js-work-more-abstract-untruncated hidden">The energy dependence of multiplicity fluctuations was studied for the most central Pb + Pb collisions at 20A, 30A, 40A, 80A and 158A GeV by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. The multiplicity distribution for negatively and positively charged hadrons is significantly narrower than Poisson one for all energies. No significant structure in energy dependence of the scaled variance of multiplicity fluctuations is observed. The measured scaled variance is lower than the one predicted by the grand-canonical formulation of the hadron-resonance gas model. As a result, MMPs are considered to be viable drug targets in the therapy of these diseases. Despite the high therapeutic potential of MMP inhibitors (MMPIs), all clinical trials have failed to date, except for doxycycline for periodontal disease. This can be attributed to (i) poor selectivity of the MMPIs, (ii) poor target validation for the targeted therapy and (iii) poorly defined predictive preclinical animal models for safety and efficacy. Lessons from previous failures, such as recent discoveries of oxidative/ nitrosative activation and phosphorylation of MMPs, as well as novel nonmatrix related intra-and extracellular targets of MMP, give new hope for MMPI development for both chronic and acute diseases. In this article we critically review the major structural determinants of the selectivity and the milestones of past design efforts of MMPIs where 2-/3-dimensional structurebased methods were intensively applied. Altered glucose homeostasis and genetic susceptibility are claimed to play a role in the elevation of SLC. We aimed to test whether metabolic control or the genetic variants of G protein beta 3 (Gb3) subunits determine SLC and other erythrocyte transport activities in complication-free stage of type 1 diabetes. A total of 96 complication-free type 1 diabetic children and adolescents were enrolled. SLC, Na+/K+-ATPase (NAK) and Ca2+-ATPase (CA) were measured by functional assays in erythrocytes. Gb3-C825T polymorphism was determined by PCR-RFLP. Results were related to HbA1c and were compared to those of 97 healthy controls. SLC activity was higher in diabetics (387±146 vs. 280±65 mmol/RBC · hour) and correlated with HbA1c levels (y=0.004x+6.42, r=0.33, n=96, p<0.01). NAK and CA activities were unaltered. The prevalence of 825T allele was similar in the patient and control groups (0.34 vs 0.37) and no differences in enzyme activities were observed between the 825T allele-positive and negative subjects. Although metabolic control correlated with SLC, other membrane functions were not affected. Therefore we hypothesize that the relationship between advanced glycation and SLC elevation is not causative. Rather, a genetic susceptibility for the coexistence of poor metabolic control and higher SLC is more likely. Centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions, semi-central C+C and Si+Si collisions as well as inelastic p+p interactions were analyzed. The number of projectile participants determined on an event-by-event basis was used to characterize the collision centrality. The scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution obtained in the forward rapidity region ($1.1 <y_{c.m.} <2.6$) shows a significant increase towards peripheral collisions. The results are similar for negatively and positively charged particles and about 50% larger for all charged particles. String-hadronic models of nuclear reactions without the fusion process do not reproduce the rise of fluctuations from central towards peripheral collisions. Diabetic retinopathy was frequently found in those with positive U4C even in patients without albuminutia, indicating the presence of subclinical nephropathy. We have analyzed interactions of nuclei of different size (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, Pb+Pb) at 158A GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is performed for π + π − pairs with invariant mass very close to the two-pion threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma component in a hadronic medium, even if the σ-meson has no well defined vacuum state. However, the role of radon in the therapeutic effect is not fully clarified yet. Endocrine parameter levels may be influenced by radon-like endocrine levels in balneotherapeutic treatments (bath treatment). For this reason changes of these parameters were examined in this study. A total of 81 speleotherapy patients were involved in the survey. They spent four hours daily in Tapolca Cave, five days a week, for two weeks. In this study, the thyreoiedea stimulating hormone, free triiodine-tironin, free thyroxine, prolactine, cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and beta endorphine levels of the body were examined before and after the treatment. After statistical analysis of the data a significant decrease of cortisol levels of patients was found, which was not directly correlated with radon concentration. In the case of thyroid hormones, there were no significantly detectable changes of the hormone levels except for low radon concentration levels a significant decrease in the free thyroxine and the thyreoiedea stimulating hormone level of male patients was observed. Speleotherapy has an effect on the level of endocrine hormones; however, no direct correlation with differences in radon level was found. The multiplicity distribution for negatively and positively charged hadrons is significantly narrower than Poisson one for all energies. No significant structure in energy dependence of the scaled variance of multiplicity fluctuations is observed. The measured scaled variance is lower than the one predicted by the grand-canonical formulation of the hadron-resonance gas model. As a result, MMPs are considered to be viable drug targets in the therapy of these diseases. Despite the high therapeutic potential of MMP inhibitors (MMPIs), all clinical trials have failed to date, except for doxycycline for periodontal disease. This can be attributed to (i) poor selectivity of the MMPIs, (ii) poor target validation for the targeted therapy and (iii) poorly defined predictive preclinical animal models for safety and efficacy. Lessons from previous failures, such as recent discoveries of oxidative/ nitrosative activation and phosphorylation of MMPs, as well as novel nonmatrix related intra-and extracellular targets of MMP, give new hope for MMPI development for both chronic and acute diseases. In this article we critically review the major structural determinants of the selectivity and the milestones of past design efforts of MMPIs where 2-/3-dimensional structurebased methods were intensively applied. Altered glucose homeostasis and genetic susceptibility are claimed to play a role in the elevation of SLC. We aimed to test whether metabolic control or the genetic variants of G protein beta 3 (Gb3) subunits determine SLC and other erythrocyte transport activities in complication-free stage of type 1 diabetes. A total of 96 complication-free type 1 diabetic children and adolescents were enrolled. SLC, Na+/K+-ATPase (NAK) and Ca2+-ATPase (CA) were measured by functional assays in erythrocytes. Gb3-C825T polymorphism was determined by PCR-RFLP. Results were related to HbA1c and were compared to those of 97 healthy controls. SLC activity was higher in diabetics (387±146 vs. 280±65 mmol/RBC · hour) and correlated with HbA1c levels (y=0.004x+6.42, r=0.33, n=96, p<0.01). NAK and CA activities were unaltered. The prevalence of 825T allele was similar in the patient and control groups (0.34 vs 0.37) and no differences in enzyme activities were observed between the 825T allele-positive and negative subjects. Although metabolic control correlated with SLC, other membrane functions were not affected. Therefore we hypothesize that the relationship between advanced glycation and SLC elevation is not causative. Rather, a genetic susceptibility for the coexistence of poor metabolic control and higher SLC is more likely. Centrality selected Pb+Pb collisions, semi-central C+C and Si+Si collisions as well as inelastic p+p interactions were analyzed. The number of projectile participants determined on an event-by-event basis was used to characterize the collision centrality. The scaled variance of the multiplicity distribution obtained in the forward rapidity region ($1.1 <y_{c.m.} <2.6$) shows a significant increase towards peripheral collisions. The results are similar for negatively and positively charged particles and about 50% larger for all charged particles. String-hadronic models of nuclear reactions without the fusion process do not reproduce the rise of fluctuations from central towards peripheral collisions. Diabetic retinopathy was frequently found in those with positive U4C even in patients without albuminutia, indicating the presence of subclinical nephropathy. We have analyzed interactions of nuclei of different size (p+p, C+C, Si+Si, Pb+Pb) at 158A GeV adopting, as appropriate observables, scaled factorial moments in a search for intermittent fluctuations in transverse dimensions. The analysis is performed for π + π − pairs with invariant mass very close to the two-pion threshold. In this sector one may capture critical fluctuations of the sigma component in a hadronic medium, even if the σ-meson has no well defined vacuum state. However, the role of radon in the therapeutic effect is not fully clarified yet. Endocrine parameter levels may be influenced by radon-like endocrine levels in balneotherapeutic treatments (bath treatment). For this reason changes of these parameters were examined in this study. A total of 81 speleotherapy patients were involved in the survey. They spent four hours daily in Tapolca Cave, five days a week, for two weeks. In this study, the thyreoiedea stimulating hormone, free triiodine-tironin, free thyroxine, prolactine, cortisol, dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate, adrenocorticotropic hormone, and beta endorphine levels of the body were examined before and after the treatment. After statistical analysis of the data a significant decrease of cortisol levels of patients was found, which was not directly correlated with radon concentration. In the case of thyroid hormones, there were no significantly detectable changes of the hormone levels except for low radon concentration levels a significant decrease in the free thyroxine and the thyreoiedea stimulating hormone level of male patients was observed. Speleotherapy has an effect on the level of endocrine hormones; however, no direct correlation with differences in radon level was found.
