army helicopters engaged in the military offensive in Chechnya are violating its airspace. <BR><BR> The Georgian ambassador at the UN passed a statement from the foreign ministry in Tbilisi to the Security Council President claiming the helicopters had shot at Georgian villages near the border with Chechnya. <BR><BR> <B>Russian "provocation"</B> <BR><BR> The letter says a unit of the Georgian border guard also came under attack. The Georgian foreign ministry described the incident as part of an attempt by the Russian authorities to involve Georgia in the war in the region at any cost. <BR><BR> It demanded an end to what it called direct aggression against a sovereign state and called on Moscow to identify and hold responsible those involved. <BR><BR> Russia has rejected Georgia's allegation, saying reports of the bombing were disinformation aimed at souring relations between the two countries. <BR><BR> <B>Reconnaissance mission</B> <BR><BR> A Russian Defence Ministry spokesman said its helicopters had been carrying out combat reconnaissance on a section of a road in Russian territory leading to the border with Georgia.<BR><BR> <BR><BR> Reports from Moscow say Georgia and Russia have agreed to despatch teams to investigate the incident. <BR><BR> Russian warplanes fighting Chechen rebels mistakenly attacked Georgian territory in August, forcing Moscow to apologise. <BR><BR> </SPAN> <BR CLEAR="ALL">
