The job of cleaning out the house in which I had grown up fell to me. My labors were rewarded by the discovery of a trove of personal documents—mostly personal letters— in my father’s closet. At the time, too traumatized to engage with them, I skimmed, sorted, boxed, and stored them. It took me more than thirty years to open that box and absorb its contents. My rediscovery of this archive significantly affected my relation to the field of life writing, to which I had devoted my academic career. It greatly enhanced my appreciation of correspondence: I finally “get” letters. And the rich material impelled me to compose a memoir of my father. Doing so made me face ethical issues from a novel perspective. However, the unprecedented pandemic COVID-19, forced a break in my regular schedule, giving me time to think and reflect on the past. Throughout my life, I wanted to discover myself. This thoughtful life writing is a mélange of significant incidents of my life that are inseparable, intertwined individually, and made this solitary voyage of life meaningful. Many people helped me to sculpt this journey smoothly. My deceased father, Abba occupies the memorabilia the most, maybe that’s human nature- we look for those who left us, we miss them or we cherish the warmth and values embedded by them in us. I admire Abba for believing in empowering his daughters, four of us. I came across plenty of people on this journey– family members, friends, relatives, teachers, and colleagues whose fond memories are preserved in the archive of my memory with love and tenderness. Some of them have left this world for eternity but I still feel their presence. As I had entered a new phase of life, the trousseau I brought to my new family fifteen years ago seemed insignificant. December 2011. </p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Relatively late in my career (in my early 60s), I began to write a biographical memoir of my father, William Griffith Couser (1906–1975), based initially and primarily on documents, mostly letters, that I found after his death. In doing so, after nearly 30 years of working as a critic of life writing, I became a life writer myself. The value of this memoir will lie in the letters themselves, partly because they are well written, partly because they are sufficiently numerous to allow me to reconstruct the web of my father’s significant relationships during a formative period. And that is because they come from an era and a social set in which letter writing was a significant medium through which life was lived. In short, I have come to regard the materials not as the residue of a life but in a way as scraps of it, not an epiphenomenon thrown off by the ‘real life’ of which they are the tantalizing written remains, but the actual stuff of life itself – preserved moments. I have become convinced that in his 20s, at least, my father lived a good deal of his life in and through correspondence with friends and family. As writers continue to experiment with the formal and aesthetic possibilities of rendering their subjects' lives in ever new ways, the modes of writing about historical lives have diversified enormously, and continue to do so. The proliferation of public interest in accounts of historical lives in recent decades-captured by such buzzwords as "biography boom" or "memoir craze"-is reflected in the similarly expanding field of life-writing studies, as scholars regularly re-conceptualise their object of study to keep pace with the rapid evolution of life-writing forms and to incorporate the new insights their discipline has yielded.
