The readings and class assignments make use of research-based, real-world, and cross-cultural examples. In this course students will apply their knowledge of typical growth and development in childhood to those children whose development is atypical. The course places specific emphasis on how student develop and learn through play. An ecological systems approach will be taken to explain possible reasons for atypical and atypical developmental patterns. Systems include biological, environmental, and societal.  <div id="writingintensive" style="display: none;"> <h3>Writing-intensive Requirements</h3> <p>In order to graduate, all students must pass three writing-intensive courses after their freshman year. Two writing-intensive courses must be in a student's major. The third can be in any discipline. Students are advised to take one writing-intensive class each year, beginning with the sophomore year, and to avoid “clustering” these courses near the end of their matriculation.
