<poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>The Lord GOD has sworn [an oath] by His holiness <t><p class="indent1">That, &#8220;Behold, the days are coming upon you <t><p class="indent1">When they shall take you away with meat hooks, <t><p class="indent1">And the last of you with fish hooks. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>&#8220;And you shall go out through the breaches [made in the city wall], <t><p class="indent1">Every woman straight before her [unable to turn aside], <t><p class="indent1">And you shall be cast to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Harmon,&#8221; <t><p class="indent1">Says the LORD. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>&#8220;Come to Bethel [where the golden calf is] and transgress; <t><p class="indent1">In Gilgal [where idols are worshiped] multiply transgression; <t><p class="indent1">Bring your sacrifices every morning, <t><p class="indent1">Your tithes every three days! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>&#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Offer [by burning] a sacrifice of thanksgiving of that which is leavened, <t><p class="indent1">And [boastfully] proclaim freewill offerings, announce them. <t><p class="indent1">For this you so love to do, O children of Israel!&#8221; <t><p class="indent1">Says the Lord GOD. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>&#8220;I also gave you cleanness of teeth [because of the famine] in all your cities <t><p class="indent1">And lack of bread in all your places, <t><p class="indent1">Yet you have not returned to Me [in repentance],&#8221; says the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>&#8220;Furthermore, I withheld the rain from you <t><p class="indent1">When <i>there were</i> still three months until the harvest. <t><p class="indent1">Then I would send rain on one city, <t><p class="indent1">And on another city I would not send rain; <t><p class="indent1">One piece of ground was rained on, <t><p class="indent1">While the part not rained on would dry up. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>&#8220;So [the people of] two or three cities would stagger into one city to drink water, <t><p class="indent1">But would not be satisfied; <t><p class="indent1">Yet you have not returned to Me [in repentance],&#8221; says the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>&#8220;I wounded you with blight [from the hot, blasting east wind] and with mildew; <t><p class="indent1">And the caterpillar devoured <t><p class="indent1">Your many gardens and vineyards, your fig trees and your olive trees; <t><p class="indent1">Yet you have not returned to Me [in repentance],&#8221; says the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>&#8220;I sent a plague among you like [those of] Egypt; <t><p class="indent1">I killed your young men with the sword and I captured your horses, <t><p class="indent1">I made the stench of your camp rise up into your nostrils; <t><p class="indent1">Yet you have not returned to Me [in repentance],&#8221; says the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>&#8220;I overthrew <i>and</i> destroyed [some among] you, as [I, your] God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, <t><p class="indent1">And you were [rescued] like a log pulled out of the flame; <t><p class="indent1">Yet you have not returned to Me [in repentance],&#8221; says the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/amos/4-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>&#8220;Therefore this is what I shall do to you, O Israel;
