Indeed, it is apt that this Special Edition appears in the same year that the American Academy of Religion has, for the first time, included a Group on 'Interreligious and Interfaith Studies'. (While some wish to distinguish the two, I understand the terms as variants of the same broad nexus of interests). A growing number of books and articles are starting to give shape and voice to what IRS is (to mention but some: Leirvik 2014a, 2014b; Hedges 2012, 2014; Patel 2013; Stanton 2014), while a growing number of universities have chairs, appointments, or courses in the field (see Leirvik 2014a). Meanwhile a good number of academic journals exist in related areas, arguably the most significant being Studies in Interreligious Dialogue, but also including well-established and new ones like The Journal of Ecumenical Studies, Dialogue Studies, Buddhist-Christian Studies, Interreligious Insight (the successor to World Faith's Encounter) and the Journal of Inter-Religious Studies (formerly the Journal of Interreligious Dialogue); as the names suggest some of these have a narrow remit, others a broader one. The AAR group 'Call for Proposals' will give us some indication of the broad nature of the field: 'The Group invites… proposals that critically examine modes of response to religious pluralism from multiple disciplinary perspectives', going on to include, amongst many others, such areas as 'Mapping the discourse of interreligious studies', 'Critical reflection on race and gender in the interfaith movement', 'Interfaith pedagogies' and 'Theologies of interreligious encounter' (IIS 2014).

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Christianity and interfaith engagement
Douglas Pratt

… The Challenges of Change, University of …, 2008

Early in the twentieth century the Christian Church began to question long-held exclusivist and negative assumptions toward other religions. By mid-century far-reaching changes were underway: other religions and their peoples were honoured as dialoguepartners and viewed as co-religionists capable of common cause action. Since the 1960s the official stance of the Vatican is one of goodwill, high valuation, and respect toward other faiths. Christian perspectives on religious diversity changed from vexed problem to celebrated phenomenon. However, the global resurgence of religion and allied ideologies such as fundamentalism provide new challenges to the age-old question of Christianity and other faiths. 10 Indeed, secularism, as a point of common cause with other faiths, was soon critiqued by Hendrikus Kraemer: see his ‗Christianity and Secularism', IRM, Vol 19 (1930), 195-208, where he advocates the theology of Karl Barth and the priority of revelation as the counterpoint to ‗secular corrosion'; and also by Emil Brunner who argued that against-the all-menacing tide of secularism there is but one breakwater-the Word of God‖, ‗Secularism as a problem for the Church',

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Like Rosewater: Reflections on Interreligious Dialogue
Ingeborg Gabriel

Journal of ecumenical studies, 2010

I. The Dialogical Imperative: Some Reflections on the Present Kairos The word "religion" etymologically derives from religare--to bind together. Religions thus ought to create reliable bonds between God of the divine and humans, as well as between men and women of different walks of life, nationalities, races, genders, and faiths. Any look at the present global situation, however, shows that religious beliefs divide more than they unite people. This makes the question of how faith communities can further peace one of the most urgent of our time. This essay begins with a short introduction on the characteristics of the present. I will then reflect on the Vienna Dialogue Initiative and, from this experience, develop a typology of three different forms of interreligious dialogue. In doing so I will argue that a universal ecumenism in ethics and law is possible, though not easy, because of the particular epistemological status of ethics. Sociologists have identified a number of features that characterize the present age. With regard to the question of religion and peace, 1 will underscore three global megatrends: religious (and ideological) pluralism, globalization, and desecularization. (1) These mutually influence each other, although each of them has different origins as well as consequences for faith traditions. Pluralism is--as Peter L. Berger argued--perhaps the distinguishing mark of modern societies. It is enhanced by a variety of factors, the most important of which is migration between countries and from the countryside to the cities. The result is that people of different religious and other backgrounds live side-by-side, with a weakening of traditional lifestyles. Pluralism also causes humans to gain greater independence from their communities and the social traditions that these consider to be valid. A similar effect is brought about by the global media, which make people aware of the existence of other values and religious beliefs. Moreover, religious pluralism is increased where religious freedom, that is, the political option to grant equal civil and legal status to all creeds, is part of the constitution of a country. Mobility, the media, and the legal equality of all faith traditions thus further religious pluralism not only in Western societies but also worldwide. As a consequence, most men and women today are actually--or at least virtually--in contact with adherents of other faiths, worldviews, and values. Pluralism, religious or otherwise, is not new in itself. However, its scope and influence have expanded greatly during past decades due to the reasons just mentioned. The same holds true for globalization. Although there has been a worldwide transfer of goods and ideas since about the sixteenth century, its range and speed have accelerated immensely in this age. Technological innovations, particularly the computer and the internet, have created a dynamic that is transforming all areas of life around the globe. Anthony Giddens has aptly called this a "runaway world." (2) Globalization also facilitates migration and the worldwide dissemination of values and ideas, scientific and otherwise. Real and virtual encounters with people from the most far-off points of the earth have become an everyday reality, permeating our worldview and influencing our decisions. Globalization also leads to a close interconnectedness among religions that has never existed before. It not only stimulates interest in other faiths and beliefs worldwide but also allows them mutually to influence each other, both consciously and unconsciously, both positively and negatively. It makes for new alliances as well as new polarizations between believers, between believers and secularists, and between moderates and fundamentalists within faith communities, with the last of these attempting to reestablish old borders and particularities. (3) Globalization and its social countermovement, fragmentation, have had a growing effect on politics during past decades, which is associated with the third trend: desecularization. …

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

Editorial: Faith in a pluralist society
Ruth DeSouza

downloadDownload free PDFView PDFchevron_right

‘A Postsecular Politics? Abstracting accounts of inter-faith relations from broader accounts of political economy masks how the state and the market are key factors in establishing the conditions and possibilities for such relations. This article avoids such abstraction and develops a constructive account of how to reconceptualize inter-faith relations as a civic rather than religious practice and common action between different faiths as directly political rather than as humanitarian service provision. Part of this account entails situating it within broader debates about secularization and whether the contemporary context can be described as “postsecular.” The key question addressed in this article is how can a common life be negotiated between different faith traditions, with different and competing claims to truths, amid the pressures and structures brought to bear upon that common life by the state and the market on which all depend? This article describes some of the factors shaping the relationship between faith groups, state and market within the contemporary context, and then, after locating these issues within broader theoretical debates about secularization, makes some constructive proposals for how religious groups might engage in inter-faith relations within this context. It closes by identifing the civic practices of listening, a commitment to place, and the building and maintenance of institutions as central to the formation of a politics of the common good.

<button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"‘A Postsecular Politics? The first one, the most prevalent, is the kind of writing that is born out of the scholarly work of the author and is primarily based on research and teaching experience. The second kind, comparatively harder to come by, is the writing of a scholar that is the result of an entire lifetime of study, research, teaching, understanding, and more importantly, dialogue. Interreligious Encounters is a rare gem of the second kind of academic writing. When the reader lays their hands on it, and sees the name of the author, they are already overawed with great expectation and tremendous reverence. However, rather than get ourselves hijacked over the best choice of words, we need to acknowledge some fundamental realities. The first is that cultures, societies and religions have evolved in relationship with-and, too often, conflict between-one another. The second is that, even in the darkest moments of religious and cultural conflict, there are outstanding examples of individuals who stood against the tide of hatred, division and intolerance. Throughout history, there are also examples of entire multi-religious societies living in relative harmony and peace, sometimes for centuries. At some level, interfaith dialogue has always been with us-even if it was sometimes looked upon with suspicion. The third reality is this: we now find ourselves at a new juncture in human history. Social historians note the final century of the second millennium was the most bloody in the history of human life. Wars, gulags and genocides fuelled by warped ideologies and despotic dictatorships, assisted by the new technologies of war, resulted in the death of some two billion human beings. The vast majority of these war victims were civilians. 1 Nor can it be denied that religion played its role: often in its inability to stem the tide of violence and destruction that overtook entire nations and continents; sometimes through the direct inflammation of national and ethnic hatreds in the very name of 1 The euphemism for this mass-murdering of civilians is 'collateral damage'. 3 Gerard Hall: Australian Catholicism and Interfaith Dialogue religion. Of course, this is not the whole story of twentieth century life or religion. But it raises many questions about the manner in which peoples, nations, cultures and religions need to interact in our 'globalised' world of the third millennium. To paraphrase the oft-quoted words of Catholic theologian Hans Küng: 'No peace on earth without peace among the nations; and no peace among the nations without dialogue among the religions'. 2 Second, to heed the words of interfaith scholar Raimon Panikkar, we stand on the brink of a new wave of interaction among the religions of the world. In reality, all religions claim to be "ways of peace". 3 The task of the religious traditions is to reclaim the depths of their own spiritual wisdom in a new spirit of openness and respect for other traditions.
