So he sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> and said<MH559> to them, “Go<MH1980>, inquire<MH1875> of Baal-zebub<MH1176>, the god<MH430> of Ekron<MH6138>, whether<MH518> I will recover<MH2421a> from this<MH2088> sickness<MH2483>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>But the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> said<MH1696> to Elijah<MH452> the Tishbite<MH8664b>, “Arise<MH6965>, go<MH5927> up<MH5927> to meet<MH7122> the messengers<MH4397> of the king<MH4428> of Samaria<MH8111> and say<MH1696> to them, ‘Is it because<MH4480, 1097> there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> God<MH430> in Israel<MH3478> <i>that</i> you are going<MH1980> to inquire<MH1875> of Baal-zebub<MH1176>, the god<MH430> of Ekron<MH6138>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Now therefore<MH3651>, this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>You will not get<MH3381> down<MH3381> from the bed<MH4296> upon which<MH834> you have lain<MH5927>, but you shall certainly<MH4191> die<MH4191>.’” Then Elijah<MH452> departed<MH1980>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>When the messengers<MH4397> returned<MH7725> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Ahaziah, he said<MH559> to them, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Why<MH4100> have you returned<MH7725>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>They said<MH559> to him, “A man<MH376> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> to meet<MH7122> us and said<MH559> to us, ‘Go<MH1980>, return<MH7725> to the king<MH4428> who<MH834> sent<MH7971> you and say<MH1696> to him, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘Is it because<MH4480, 1097> there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> God<MH430> in Israel<MH3478> <i>that</i> you are sending<MH7971> <i>messengers</i> to inquire<MH1875> of Baal-zebub<MH1176>, the god<MH430> of Ekron<MH6138>? Therefore<MH3651> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>you will not get<MH3381> down<MH3381> from the bed<MH4296> upon which<MH834> you have lain<MH5927>, but you shall certainly<MH4191> die<MH4191>.’”’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then he said<MH1696> to them, “What<MH4100> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>did the man<MH376> look<MH4941> like<MH4941>, who<MH834> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> to meet<MH7122> you and spoke<MH1696> these<MH428> words<MH1697> to you?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And they said to him, “<i>He was</i> a hairy<MH1167, 8181> man<MH376> with a leather<MH5785> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>belt<MH232> worn<MH247> around his waist<MH4975>.” And he said<MH559>, “It is Elijah<MH452> the Tishbite<MH8664b>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then <i>the king</i> sent<MH7971> to him a captain<MH8269> of fifty<MH2572> with his fifty<MH2572> <i>men.</i> And he went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to him, and behold<MH2009>, he was sitting<MH3427> on the top<MH7218> of the hill<MH2022>. And he said<MH1696> to him, “You man<MH376> of God<MH430>, the king<MH4428> says<MH1696>, ‘Come<MH3381> down<MH3381>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>But Elijah<MH452> replied<MH6030a> to the captain<MH8269> of fifty<MH2572>, “If<MH518> I am a man<MH376> of God<MH430>, may fire<MH784> come<MH3381> down<MH3381> from heaven<MH8064> and consume<MH398> you and your fifty<MH2572>.” Then fire<MH784> came<MH3381> down<MH3381> from heaven<MH8064> and consumed<MH398> him and his fifty<MH2572> <i>men.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>So <i>the king</i> again<MH7725> sent<MH7971> to him another<MH312> captain<MH8269> of fifty<MH2572> with his fifty<MH2572> <i>men.</i> And he said<MH1696> to him, “You man<MH376> of God<MH430>, this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the king<MH4428> says<MH559>: ‘Come<MH3381> down<MH3381> quickly<MH4120>!’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>But Elijah<MH452> replied<MH6030a> to them, “If<MH518> I am a man<MH376> of God<MH430>, may fire<MH784> come<MH3381> down<MH3381> from heaven<MH8064> and consume<MH398> you and your fifty<MH2572>.” Then the fire<MH784> of God<MH430> came<MH3381> down<MH3381> from heaven<MH8064> and consumed<MH398> him and his fifty<MH2572> <i>men.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>So <i>the king</i> again<MH7725> sent<MH7971> the captain<MH8269> of a third<MH7992> fifty<MH2572> with his fifty<MH2572> <i>men.</i> When the third<MH7992> captain<MH8269> of fifty<MH2572> went<MH5927> up<MH5927>, he came<MH935> and bowed<MH3766> down<MH3766> on his knees<MH1290> before<MH5048> Elijah<MH452>, and begged<MH2603a> him and said<MH1696> to him, “You man<MH376> of God<MH430>, please<MH4994> let my life<MH5315> and the lives<MH5315> of these<MH428> fifty<MH2572> servants<MH5650> of yours be<MH3365> precious<MH3365> in your sight<MH5869>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, fire<MH784> came<MH3381> down<MH3381> from heaven<MH8064> and consumed<MH398> the first<MH7223> two<MH8147> captains<MH8269> of fifty<MH2572> with their fifties<MH2572>; but now<MH6258> let my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>life<MH5315> be<MH3365> precious<MH3365> in your sight<MH5869>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> said<MH1696> to Elijah<MH452>, “Go<MH3381> down<MH3381> with him; do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> of him.” So he got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and went<MH3381> down<MH3381> with him to the king<MH4428>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Then he said<MH1696> to him, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘Since<MH3282, 834> you have sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> to inquire<MH1875> of Baal-zebub<MH1176>, the god<MH430> of Ekron<MH6138>—is it because<MH4480, 1097> there<MH369> is<MH369> no<MH369> God<MH430> in Israel<MH3478> to inquire<MH1875> of His word<MH1697>? Therefore<MH3651> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>you will not get<MH3381> down<MH3381> from the bed<MH4296> upon which<MH834> you have lain<MH5927>, but you shall certainly<MH4191> die<MH4191>.’” <p class="hdg">Jehoram Reigns over Israel</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/1-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So Ahaziah died<MH4191> in accordance with the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> which<MH834> Elijah<MH452> had spoken<MH1696>.
