As I sit and reflect on everything that we’ve accomplished within these walls at Digg HQ, I want everyone to know that it wouldn’t have been possible without our awesome, devoted Digg community. Again, none of these new products would have succeeded if it wasn’t for your valuable comments and feedback. When we release products, we have a benefit like no other company: we have the fastest, most detailed and loyal feedback loop on the entire Internet! Like we always say, keep the feedback coming. What started as a simple idea has certainly come a long way. From a vision of a new way to surface news, and a team of three, to 40+ million monthly visitors and 80+ passionate employees...well, suffice it to say that I'm very proud of what we've become.</p> <p>There have been a lot of memorable moments over the years. To date, we've had over 14 Million stories submitted and Dugg by you.</p> <p>So for today, our 5th birthday, we have a couple of things to celebrate and share.</p> <p>First off, we're excited that Dec 4, 2009 is officially <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100104075218/http://www.flickr.com/photos/diggdotcom/4158356602/sizes/l/">"Digg.com Day"</a> in our home base of San Francisco. We are proud and humbled by this honor.</p> <p>Also, as way to commemorate all of the great submissions over the past five years - and more to come - we've today launched <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100104075218/http://labs.digg.com/365">Digg 365</a>, a visualization of all of the blockbuster stories surfaced with your millions of Diggs. We worked with our friends at <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100104075218/http://www.barbariangroup.com/">The Barbarian Group</a> to provide an interactive, fun way to showcase the top ten stories on any given day, month or year. You can also see the top ten in each category by year. Today we are releasing a revamped API that allows developers to write/contribute data using OAuth, a feature that many developers have been eagerly anticipating. In this release, Digging and burying both stories and comments are now supported.</p> <p>In addition to the revamped API, we focused extensively on usability and have included an updated <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100104075218/http://digg.com/api/docs/overview">API documentation</a> section on Digg with more detail on each API method including code and response examples. Today's changes, as well as our updates this summer to the <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100104075218/http://blog.digg.com/?p=817">API license</a>, give developers much more freedom to create (and profit from) great new applications off the Digg platform.</p> <p>To help showcase some of the new functionality, we've created a reference app off the new API, a streamlined version of the Digg site called DiggLite, which can serve as a blueprint for any basic Digg-based application. It includes a river of the most recently popular stories, which can be Dugg and buried remotely, and the means of breaking things down by top-level topics. Today we’re launching a new homepage voting experiment called Digg Trends which will surface certain highly active stories as they’re trending to Digg’s homepage so people can vote on whether or not they feel the story actually belongs there.</p> <p>How does it work? Digg Trends identifies and highlights upcoming stories that have a high volume of activity (think Diggs, comments, favorites, shares, etc.). When we detect a new trending story, it will appear on the homepage for ten minutes. Based on the Digg and bury activity in those ten minutes the story will either become popular or not. To make it easy to follow the action, we’ve setup a <a href="http://web.archive.org/web/20100104075218/http://twitter.com/digg_trends">Twitter account</a> to tweet out when a new Digg Trend is up for voting on the homepage. Behind the scenes we track the types of stories you Digg, when you dugg something pre or post homepage promotion, and how your Digg influences others on the site. While not outwardly visible, many of these factors help us gauge when to put stories on the homepage or recommend them to others.</p> <p>So what changes on Digg?
