However, back in the late 1930s, Ettore Bugatti also set out to build racing aircraft. In 1937 he began construction on a radical machine that had a swept-forward wing design, a twin-V tailplane, and twin contra-rotating propellers powered by two Bugatti straight-eight engines. Unfortunately, the Second World War broke out just before the aircraft was completed and Bugatti had to flee Paris, taking his creation with him. Bringing in famed aeronautical engineer, Louis D. de Monge to assist in the design, the original aircraft used just one straight-eight, 450 hp (335 Kw) Bugatti Type 50 engine. However, the pair soon abandoned this design for a tilt at an even greater prize; the world air speed record.</p> <p>As such, the 100P was then fitted with two Type 50 engines behind the cockpit driving a propeller each in a complex arrangement where the front engine was slanted to the right and joined to a drive shaft at the firewall behind the pilot, which then passed by the pilot's right elbow. The second engine was slanted to the left, in a similar arrangement to the first. Despite its humble surroundings, the 100P was constructed like any other finely-tuned Bugatti creation and possessed elements that predated many innovations not to be seen in allied fighter planes until the 1940s. Had the development been allowed to continue, and the craft built as a military machine as the French government of the time had mooted, the 100P may well have also made a supremely fast, highly maneuverable fighter easily capable of overcoming even the fastest German aircraft of the time.</p> <p>The original 100P, after its hasty removal from Paris as German troops approached, was stored in a barn for more than 30 years. With Bugatti dying in 1946, just one year after World War Two ended, the 100P remained untouched until the 1960s, when it was sold – and resold – to various American collectors and shifted to the United States, where its engines were removed and fitted to Bugatti automobiles. With few plans and working largely from donations, the international team at the Bugatti 100P Project has had to create almost every single part on the machine, spending many thousands of hours putting it all together.</p> <p>Utilizing modern fiberglass techniques, machined alloy fittings, and other materials not available to Bugatti in the 1930s, the 100P project aircraft is, however, true to the size, power, and shape of the original. As such, the flying dynamics and handling characteristics should also be accurate. Though what they are is largely unknown with the original never actually having made it into the skies, let alone off the factory floor.</p> <p>Named Reve Bleu (Blue Dream) by its builders, the aircraft is currently undergoing taxiing and engine testing in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Have the drive shaft of one electric motor hollow so the drive shaft of the aft electric motor can pass through it to the other prop. Put an ICE engine with a generator mounted behind the pilot. It would really simplify things and reduce costs to remove those drive shafts passing along side the pilot along with all the gearboxes. It would also be safer to have an electric cable passing under the floor of the cockpit instead. Those thin wings produce little drag but have little volume for a meaningful fuel load. No range or combat endurance.</p> <p>Where would the armament be placed? A WWII fighter would need at least the equivalent of four .303 machine guns MINIMUM. Preferably along the lines of the American fit, six Browning .50cals and about 1500 rounds.</p> <p>And other mission capablilities. What about photo recon? Where would one put the cameras?</p> <p>Add radio equipment, oxygen system, some armor plate to protect the pilot and machinery. Plane gets bigger, heavier, slower. And access doors to get at machinery. Radiators and oil coolers. Air intakes and vents.</p> <p>That drivetrain sounds like a beast to manufacture and maintain. "Twin-V" is a meaningless term in this context. The idea is quick deployment and elimination of an enemy not saving fuel. I doubt that the original would have done well until testing and alterations were made to bring it up to snuff. Even then it may not have been better than existing aircraft. The shape is appealing. Maybe one modern engine would be a better choice and those drive shafts need to go as at the very least they will be maintenance nightmares and they do add weight and bulk to the craft. It looks like the same issue we had with the P51 fighters. If a four blade prop was used the aircraft wanted to rotate with the propeller. Even with a three blade prop some caution had to be taken as to how suddenly one applied power. Torque can be hard to control. <span class="strong">glorybe2</span> </li> <li> <p>There is one other useful innovation not available to Bugatti and de Monge in the 30s, inexpensive, fast & accurate computer simulation. I hope that these guys modelled this design before building it to make certain that it is even flyable. Having both engines behind the pilot with drive shafts going around the cockpit does not seem like an especially good idea. It may have been OK in 1930 on a prototype but not anymore. Let's hope it fares better than the beautiful replica of the Hughes H1 racer that tragically crashed, killing its builder. As the pilot of this craft, being surrounded by the drive shafts in such close proximity would make me nervous. Then again, here is another example of how I don't have the right stuff! I'm still envious of those fortunate enough who will fly this beautiful craft. Just to be able to see this plane on the ground and in the air would be a thrill.
