In den Jahren 1902 bis 1914 wurden insgesamt vier Deutsche Expeditionen nach Chinesisch Zentralasien (heute Xinjiang) entsandt. Benannt wurden sie nach ihrem Hauptarbeitsgebiet, der Turfan-Oase mit der Ruinenstadt Idikutšähri, der ehemaligen Hauptstadt des Gaochang-Reichs und des Westuigurischen Königreichs (in den
