Penguins are endemic species of Antarctica situated at the top of food web and are useful sentinels of pollution. To improve data of trace metal contamination in the Antarctic Peninsula region, concentrations of Cd, Pb, As, Cu and Zn in fresh excrement of penguins were determined by atomic absorption. Samples were collected in several locations during the 2011/2012 austral summer: eight sites (O&#39;Higgins Station, Yankee Harbour, Mikkelsen Harbor, Danco Island, Gonzalez Videla Base, Yelcho Station and Brown Station) from gentoo penguin (Pygoscelis papua) colonies and four locations (Hydrurga Rocks, Cape Shirreff, Narebski Point and Kopaitic Island) from chinstrap penguin (Pygoscelis antarctica) colonies. Data showed that gentoo penguin colonies had higher levels of metals (lg g-1 dw) like Pb, Cu and Zn at locations such as O&#39;Higgins (2.89 for Pb, 199.95 for Cu and 379.99 for Zn) and Gonzalez Videla (2.74 for Pb and 222.51 for Cu). Levels of Cd in excreta of chinstrap penguins were higher at Narebski Point (3.13 lg g-1). The levels of Pb, As, Cd, Cu and Zn were similar or even higher to those reported in excreta of the same species by previous studies at Antarctica. Solutions of organs were prepared by acid-assisted microwave (MW) digestion by employing HNO 3 and H 2 0 2 . Instrumental techniques selected to analyze the different tissues were inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP OES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). A wide range of elements retention capacity among the different organs was observed and the ranges ascertained are as follows (in Ag g À 1 ): As, 0.5 (liver) -0.8 (muscle); Cd, &lt; 0.07 (muscle) -3.4 (kidney); Co, 0.07 (liver) -0.7 (muscle); Cu, 0.6 (muscle) -18 (liver); Hg, 0.2 (kidney) -2.7 (liver); Mn, 1.5 (muscle) -10 (liver); Pb, 0.1 (muscle) -2.0 (liver); Se, 3.0 (muscle) -8.4 (liver). However, the northern region of the Antarctic Peninsula, is close to South America and experiences the greatest anthropogenic pressure in Antarctica. Here, we investigated, in two Antarctic Peninsula islands, intra and interspecific factors that influence the concentrations of 17 trace elements (TEs) in blood and feathers of three penguin species breeding sympatrically in relation to their trophic ecology assessed via a stable isotopic approach (C, N and S). Geographical location, foraging zone (d 13 C and d 34 S) and diet influences the interspecific difference, and sex and maturity stage diet influence the intraspecific difference of Pygoscelis penguins. Penguins from Livingston showed higher values (mean, ng. g À1 , dry weight-dw) of Zn (103), Mn (0.3), and Fe (95) than those from King George Island (Zn: 80, Mn: 1.9, and Fe: 11). Gender-related differences were observed, as males showed significantly higher values (mean, ng. g À1 , dw) of Rb (3.4) and d 15 N in blood of gentoo, and Ca (1344) in Ad elie feathers. Chicks of gentoo and Ad elie presented higher Zn, Mg, Ca, and Sr and lower 13 C values in blood than adults. The highest concentrations (mean, ng. g À1 , dw) of Cd (0.2) and Cu (26), and the lowest d 15 N values were found in chinstrap. Geographical, intraspecific (i.e., ontogenetic and gender-related) and interspecific differences in feeding seemed to have influenced TE and stable isotope values in these animals. The TE bioaccumulation by penguins may have also been influenced by natural enrichment in environmental levels of these elements, which seems to be the case for Fe, Zn, and Mn. The bioaccumulations of toxic trace elements (Cd, Pb, Al, and As), essential trace elements (Fe, Cu, Zn, Mn, Cr, V, Ni, and Sr), and major essential elements (Na, K, Mg, Ca, P, and S) were established. For the first time data about the element contents in Gentoo eggs is provided. Two hypotheses were tested: (1) there are differences in the metal levels among eggs and feathers; and (2) the element concentrations are highest in the excreta. Se determinaron las concentraciones (peso seco) de arsénico (As), cadmio (Cd), mercurio (Hg) y plomo (Pb) y porfirinas (copro-, uro-y proto-) en heces de colonias de pingüinos Papua (Pygoscelis papua), colectadas en dos lugares de la península Antártica (O&#39;Higgins y Videla). Se encontraron mayores (P &lt; 0,05) niveles de Hg (7,55 ± 1,28 μg g-1) en las heces de colonias de pingüinos en O&#39;Higgins, mientras que las colonias de pingüinos en Videla exhibieron mayores concentraciones de Cd (1,68 ± 0,71 μg g-1). Los pingüinos Papua de O&#39;Higgins mostraron mayores (P &lt; 0,05) niveles de copro-(1,81 ± 0,61 nmol g-1), uro-(1,74 ± 0,72 nmol g-1) y protoporfirinas (1,24 ± 0,46 nmol g-1), en directa relación con los mayores niveles de Hg y Pb medidos.
