A day later, the tabloid - along with the rest of the British press - was reporting her death at 40.</p> <p>In the raw, shocked aftermath of the news, many on Twitter - high-profile comedians and entertainers such as Jack Whitehall and Carrie Hope Fletcher, media types with dozens of thousands of followers - are pointing their fingers at the trolls and the tabloids. The people, one imagines, Flack was imagining in January when she posted on Instagram that her and her family’s life were “no longer up for entertainment or gossip”. It all feels strangely reminiscent of what happened after Amy Winehouse died; how we all flocked to celebrate the woman we had merrily read denigrations of in the press just days and months before.</p> <p>Because Flack, by many reports a hardworking, generous and ambitious woman, was pigeonholed and prodded at by those she stood before on camera. It is extremely telling to see her defined as “Love Island presenter” in headlines after her bitterly sad death - a couple of months ago, Google the made-up moniker “Queen of the Cougars” and only one person came up: Caroline Flack. </p> <p>The related search terms read like an AI attempt at a tabloid story: “andrew brady”, “defiant”, “harry styles”, “dating”, “love island”, “aj pritchard”. Flack’s career as a broadcaster stretched back to to the early Noughties – and yet she was defined by her relationship history. </p> </div> <div class="video-player section"> <div class="video-player__source" data-test="video" data-video="ZUFhovXaqYw"></div> </div> <div data-test="article-body-text" class="article-body-text section"> <p>The lacklustre first winter series of Love Island has been rumbling on through all of this, the first in the ITV 2 dating show’s history without Flack, the closest thing Love Island has to a host. For the Islanders, Flack was both a harbinger of doom and drama – her arrival signified the departure of a contestant – and a confidante who can intervene and interview the show’s winners and losers. For a show that has <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200216163448/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/tv/2018/07/31/love-island-much-will-contestants-earn/">made the Instagram sponsorship fortune</a> for a handful of 155 largely forgettable contestants, Flack remained Love Island’s most famous face. </p> <p>She took this series off after being catapulted into scandal at the end of last year, when she was charged with assault of her boyfriend, Lewis Burton. The case went to court days before Christmas, where Flack pleaded not guilty. Her lawyers maintain that Burton is “not a victim, he is a witness”; Flack was return to the trial in coming weeks. </p> <p>It’s a testament to Flack’s association with Love Island that producers intimated that she would return to the show (which is being hosted by Laura Whitmore in the meantime) in spite of the court case. Sources referred to her as “part of the furniture” of ITV2. It is extremely telling to see a litter of 404 pages across The Sun now Flack has died; an erasure of the reportage that attempted to shame her.</p> <p>Flack’s reputation as a “cougar” – slang for a woman who has a habit of dating younger men – began with aplomb in 2011, when she and <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200216163448/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/harry-styles/">Harry Styles</a>, then the emergent star of the rapidly famous <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200216163448/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/one-direction/">One Direction</a>, started going out. It was barely more than a fling, it seems (in 2016 Flack said: “First and foremost we are friends. We got very close for a time but that’s between me and Harry”) and happened in the wake of Styles publicly admitting that he “fancied” Flack, who had met him hosting the X Factor and went on to host the X Factor while they dated.</p> <p>Flack was 31 at the time, Styles was 17. The reaction to the news – illustrated largely by a photo of her kissing him on the cheek and pap shots of him leaving her house – was swift and punitive for Flack. A US magazine aimed at teenage girls, Girl’s Guide To One Direction, printed an illustrated photograph of Flack that pointed out her “crows feet”, said she looked like a goat and called her “Grandma”. In the UK, she people shouted at her in the street, calling her a “paedo” and a “pervert”. As soon as it was all over, she was offered more than £1 million to be the face of a cougar dating website. This despite the fact that, had she tried to make a profile on the site she would have been too young to be eligible. </p> <p>One of the oddities of fame is how the briefest incident can have a long tail. Flack was still answering questions about her relationship with Styles four years later, (“Her eyes start to well up, which strikes me as odd considering she must get asked about it so much”, read a Red magazine interview in 2015). Styles, it should be noted, has faced no such questioning at any point.</p> <p>The past decade saw Flack’s career escalate. She <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200216163448/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/strictly-come-dancing/11303506/caroline-flack-winner-strictly-come-dancing-2014-final-review.html">won Strictly Come Dancing in 2014</a>. A year later she was <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200216163448/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/tvandradio/x-factor/11546426/Caroline-Flack-shell-bring-the-fizz-back-to-the-X-Factor.html">co-hosting the X Factor with Olly Murs</a> (a gig she would later depict as a poisoned chalice, such was the public affection for O’Leary), landed the Love Island job and released a memoir, Storm in a C Cup. By 2018, she had beaten Cheryl Tweedy to the role of Roxie Hart in the West End production of Chicago.</p> <p>It’s not exactly the ascendancy expected of a woman who claims only to have achieved recognition by the age of 30. Her first acting credit, eight years earlier, was “blonde” in made-for-TV holiday rep caper Is Harry on the Boat? Famously, she had a sex scene with Danny Dyer. An interview in 2015 pointed out that it was only after a photoshoot in which Flack was encouraged to frolic in wildflower meadows and cuddle puppies that she revealed she was allergic to both pollen and dogs. </p> <p>During the final weeks of 2014, Flack came the closest she’s ever been to the nation’s sweetheart. Over the course of Strictly Come Dancing she underwent a journey of trial, perseverance and strength that could be seen as a microcosm for her career as a whole – eventually winning the competition entirely after she and partner Pasha Kovalev scored a hat-trick of perfect scores. Watching her dance, the notoriously truculent Craig Revel-Horwood declared, “My heart has melted”. On Twitter, Claire Balding, Tanya Burr and Nick Grimshaw were among the thousands cheering her on.</p> <p>Her relationship with then-boyfriend Jack Sweet came to an end while she was filming Strictly, which, she said at the time, helped her to channel her turbulent feelings into dance. “I started Strictly in a completely different part of my life, and I've come to the end and everything's changed,” she said after the final. “I think Strictly has made me more optimistic about everything.” </p> <p>Years would pass before Flack revealed what was going on behind the scenes: a year-long case of depression and anxiety attacks that “started the day after I won Strictly. I woke up and felt like somebody had covered my body in clingfilm.” Flack kept up the professional facade, explaining that she continued with the photoshoot for her book cover despite being on the brink of collapse, brought on by weaning herself off antidepressants. Now that she has died, people are saying they knew her vulnerabilities, but Flack rarely let them show. This image of the broken-hearted, struggling woman was one Flack rarely released into the public eye, which was all too ready to paint her as a voracious man-eater. </p> <p>By 2018, when she gave this interview, Love Island was rapidly entering the cultural conversation, escalating from tabloid fodder to essays printed in the London Review of Books. Its more middle-class stars – <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200216163448/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/women/work/camilla-thurlow-went-love-island-clearing-landmines/">Camilla Thurlow, a bomb-disposal expert</a>, and <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200216163448/https://www.telegraph.co.uk/money/fame-fortune/love-islands-dr-alex-spent-date-hundred-pounds-didnt-work/">Alex George, an A&E doctor</a> – commanded interviews from broadsheets. But Flack remained the object of gossip column fascination. Each new series would prompt updates of the timelines of her dating history, ripe with handsome, 20-something men who dwarf her 5’2” stature.</p> <p>Talking, once again, about the Styles backlash in 2015, Flack explained how age is more of a fluid concept within the entertainment industry: “nobody asks what age you are,” she says. “I’ve never felt I was much older than Harry anyway.”</p> <p>And she’s not unusual in being a celebrity whose partners were born in a different decade. There are 12 years between music royalty Jay-Z and Beyoncé and 15 between Daryl Hannah and Neil Young, who married in 2018. The improbable marriage between born-of-nobility model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and tough-guy actor Jason Statham is made even more so given their 20-year age gap. Sam Taylor-Johnson and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have a love that spans 23 years and there are 17 between French banker Olivier Sarkozy and US child star Mary-Kate Olsen. Much-adored actor Jeff Goldblum has a wife 31 years his junior, which doesn’t seem to tarnish his eccentric appeal.</p> <p>It’s long been clear that Flack wouldn’t receive anywhere near as much tabloid attention if she weren’t female. After all, the number of men who occupied the same position she often did – famous, single, in their thirties – makes that the norm in the entertainment industry. It is only recently, for instance, that jokes have begun to be cracked about Leonardo DiCaprio’s propensity for only dating women who are under 25 (two decades less than his 45 years). </p> <p>If anything, Flack’s refusal to ascribe to society’s expectation of heterosexual women – find someone, settle down, pop out a couple of kids and pack away the miniskirts – in their thirties says more about the public than it did her. </p> <p>It’s something that she was well aware of, too. Last year, she discussed the power of being single on Kathy Burke’s All Women, in which she said that, contrary to her media portrayal of being sad and lonely, she never really wanted the 2.4 lifestyle: “I never had the desire, I never had that fairytale, ‘I wanna prince and I want to settle down’. I’ve never got to that point yet and I’m scared that it’s going to get too late, when maybe I’ll get to a point where I want to settle down and think about having kids but that’s never been wired into me. It’s a remarkably vulnerable moment, beautifully punctured by the cackle released with the hindsight of: “But he did. And thank god I didn’t give up my job!”</p> <p>What unfolds over the course of her conversation with Burke (another happily single, successful and searingly bright woman) is a side of Flack that we were allowed to see – partially because she tries to maintain a certain level of privacy. (When her engagement collapsed, she recalled coping “the way I always do – I cried in private and did my grieving behind closed doors. Then I put on my make-up, painted a smile on my face and kept my head up high in public.”)</p> <p>With Burke, we learn that Flack is “quite romantic”, a woman who loves “falling in love” and seems quite mystified, albeit in a matter-of-fact way, by the fact she has “just never been very good at keeping it going”. </p> <p>Suddenly those photos make sense, now. The ones of Flack holding hands with another designer-stubbled chap. While they seem dazzled by the flashlight, these music managers and tennis players, Flack was ambivalent – she was too busy gazing up at them, puppy-eyed. She was too busy falling in love. </p> <p>And she had done it enough, by then, to acknowledge what happens afterwards; another dip on the merry-go-round of life. In the meantime, Flack seemed to relish the joy of being single – going on week-long walking holidays with her nieces and nephews; watching exactly what she likes on telly; not living, as she wrote last year, “a mind-numbingly boring existence to please other people.”</p> <p>“When you’re on your own, you’re more powerful, because you’re not reliant on someone else,” she told Burke. If only this was the message that got out about unmarried women without children in their thirties and forties instead. Flack may have leaned in and claimed the “Queen of the Cougars” title, but it still shames us that she’s had to. </p> <p>And it’s a realisation that seems all the more tragic in the wake of her death. The fingers are being pointed, now, at Love Island. Flack’s all-too-soon death is being lumped in with that of Mike Thalassitis and Sophie Gradon, two former Love Island contestants who died long after they left the show. </p> <p>But that doesn’t seem fair, right or particularly logical. Flack wasn’t a person barely out of their teens who was thrust into the spotlight without due preparation and left to fend for themselves. She was a woman who had worked hard at an impressive career and who never really got the recognition she deserved. Her death is an undeniable travesty, and more complicated than the media would like to admit. But her life was one wrongly defined by the tabloids and the trolls.
