In this paper, I reconstruct and compare their positions. In the case of Jonas, the changeability is implicit, based on two considerations: the first is the result of his analysis of the conditions of truth in historical statements, while the second is the consequence of his reflections on the theological implications of the shoah. In Damiani's case, the changeability is explicit, an original idea against the views of Aristotle, Jerome and Augustine, based on his understanding of divine omnipotence, which is then supported with an ingenious logical analysis. While Jonas and Damiani reached their conclusions independently, both were based on theological considerations, albeit on widely different ones. The contingency of the past had also exercised the minds of most medieval theologians, and I cast a short look at Peter of Ailly's dilemma concerning prophecies. This appears to be the result of a profound uncertainty in the self-perception of individual disciplines within the Humanities regarding their role both in academia and society. This ambiguity, not least, has its roots in their own history, which often appears as an interwoven texture of conflicting opinions. Taking a stance on the current and future role of the Humanities in general, and individual disciplines in particular thus asks for increased engagement with their own past, i.e., histories of scholarship, which are contingent on societal and political contexts. This article’s focus is on a case study from the field of Old Norse Studies. In the face of the rise of populism and nationalism in our days, Old Norse Studies, with their focus on a ‘Germanic’ past, have a special obligation to address societal challenges. It then explores the historical positivism of modernity, which seeks universal patterns and laws in history, followed by Marxist historical dialectics, which interprets the past as a class struggle. Subsequently, contemporary perspectives, such as cultural history, gender approaches, and global history, which broaden the understanding of history through new lenses, are addressed. In addition, the impact of digital technologies on the historical discipline is examined. A critical review of the various historical perspectives is undertaken, highlighting their contributions and limitations.
