Soon after comes an emergency stop: a pedestrian is crossing the street on a red light. None of this disturbs the passenger in the taxi, who continues scrolling on their smartphone. The ride continues through the narrow lanes of the city center, passing vehicles that are parking and groups of people. Destination reached. Search for a parking space. Accurate maneuvering into the next tiny gap. The passenger pays using an app rather than paying the driver. Because there isn’t one.</p> <p>Christoph is working with Bosch to help make this vision of automated driving a reality in the near future. In cities the traffic is heavy, often confusing and chaotic. Then there are pedestrians, cyclists and scooters and numerous kinds of unforeseeable situations. Since all this is highly complex, we are approaching our goal through a large number of small steps. Initially, vehicles would be able to drive on private premises, such as in a logistics facility, in a highly automated mode. The next milestone would be to bring a self-driven product onto the public road network. This could be a bus, for example. It would always travel along the same route, which would thus be somewhat less complex. Another possibility might be an automated delivery vehicle that also always travels similar routes. While we, as humans, can grasp a new scenario without having experienced it before, a vehicle has to be taught this understanding beforehand. For this reason we are developing software that is intended to prepare the vehicle for all possible situations. My task is to test this software digitally in a simulation with a large number of different scenarios. To allow this, I am writing the code for our tests and evaluations and also the software that executes them automatically. Or maybe we have parents who are getting rather old for driving. Studies have shown that automated vehicles could be particularly valuable to the older generation by increasing their mobility. Meanwhile, all cities suffer from too much traffic. A broad-based mobility concept that takes into account factors such as connectivity and automation can help to relieve this situation. I, for example, don’t enjoy driving very much. For me, time spent driving is time wasted. In an automated vehicle, on the other hand, I can make use of the time, say, to read a book, to work or to relax and to arrive at the destination less stressed. <br>Being a part of this development and being able to help create a new branch of industry from scratch is simply a great feeling. Our work will leave a lasting mark. For me that was naturally a practical solution. I have therefore discussed the possibility with my superiors of continuing to work more from home even after the pandemic is over. Together we have found a solution in which I divide my time between the office and Cologne, where my partner and I are currently living. That means that I can travel to work, say, on Tuesday morning and then return home by train after work on Thursday. I very much appreciate this flexible model of working and the trust in me that it shows. Sadly, this arrangement isn’t so easy to achieve in every line of work. At the same time, I am certain that companies in our industry will succeed in the long term by adopting flexible working models — as this will allow them to seek out the best talent far more widely. After all, a software developer from Hamburg may not be able to move to Stuttgart because they have a family or elderly parents to care for. Yet they may perfectly fit the job. And if a company has allowed them to work remotely, this also automatically leads to competitive advantages. I would even go so far as to say that it is not only beneficial for associates and their companies, but also for society as a whole. If we want to achieve gender equality, we must create opportunities that enable both partners in a relationship to pursue their careers. He has a bachelor’s degree in technology management and a masters in mechanical engineering from the University of Stuttgart and also studied engineering science and mechanics at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, USA. After completing his bachelor studies he completed the <a target="_self" aria-label="Bosch PreMaster program" href="/en/career/your-entry/graduates/premaster-program/"><span>Bosch PreMaster program</span></a>. During his masters studies he worked in a cooperation project with Bosch, in the course of which he evolved his passion for automated driving. After completing his studies he worked for a while on automated delivery vehicles and the automation of logistic hubs with Streetscooter in Aachen. He then found his way back to Bosch.
