The beginning was full of interesting statistics and the end made a great point about how tax planning should become a more important part of regular Canadians’ day-to-day lives. But the middle… well, the middle was full of the kind of fear mongering that we’re trying to fight.

…more work needs to be done to help taxpayers take full advantage of the savings available, the survey indicates.

More than half of Canadians (58 per cent) said they aren’t certain about the tax treatment of capital gains and close to two-thirds (62 per cent) admitted lack of knowledge about how dividend income is taxed.

On the charitable front, one-third (33 per cent) lack knowledge of exactly how giving is taxed, says the report.

Meanwhile, 25 per cent said they have trouble grasping the tax implications of Registered Retirement Savings Plans (RRSPs) and 36 per cent are spotty on the tax treatment of a Tax-Free Savings Account (TSFA).

The article goes on to imply that because most Canadians don’t understand how certain types of income and deductions are taxed, they are paying too much tax.

This is decidedly untrue. Just because you don’t understand the nitty-gritty of the dividend gross-up and credit mechanism doesn’t mean you’ll pay too much tax if you prepare your own return. Software, like SimpleTax, automatically calculates this for you. Even the paper forms teach you how to correctly report this income and credit.

The same goes for capital gains, donations, political contributions, medical expenses, RRSPs… you get my point.

Preparing your own return allows you to see and understand how things like RRSP contributions impact your tax bill. With SimpleTax, because everything is calculated in real-time, you can see this impact every time you enter an amount. No tricky calculations and no “boning up on the Income Tax Act” required. We also give you a simple list of every credit and deduction you can claim, supply help in plain English, and provide access to the paper forms themselves—so you can see the calculations in action.

We’re sad to see how the tax preparation industry has convinced people that they need to pay hundreds of dollars to have someone else take care of their taxes for them. Yes, there are people out there with complicated tax situations—where an accountant provides incredible value. But, chances are, your tax situation is simpler than you think.

Yes, you can do your own taxes. Don’t let anyone scare you into thinking you can’t.

Changing Your Tax Return After It's Been Filed

Allison, April 03, 2013

It’s happened to me, and—if you’re reading this post—it’s probably happened to you. You’ve gathered all your documents, completed your tax return, filed it through NETFILE, and are feeling pretty good about being done. But then you receive another slip, find a missing receipt, discover a typo, or simply realize that you need to make a change.

First, don’t panic. You can change your return. While you can’t resubmit your return through NETFILE, making a change isn’t hard. Let me walk you through it.

You can only change your return once it’s been assessed. This usually occurs within seven days of filing.1 Using CRA My Account, you can click on the “Tax Return” tab to see whether your return has been assessed. Otherwise, you’ll need to wait for your Notice of Assessment to arrive in the mail.

The easiest and fastest way to change your return is through My Account. Follow these simple steps and you’ll be “adjusted” in no time:

Log in to SimpleTax and—if you haven’t already—save a PDF copy of your tax return using “Print return”. This file is just for your records; we won’t use it again.

Make the necessary changes to your return in SimpleTax.

Save a new PDF copy of your return.

Log in to My Account, click on the “Tax Return” tab, and then click on “View returns”. You’ll see a list of your tax returns and their assessments. The most recent year is at the top of the list. Click on “Assessed” for the year you want to change. You should now see at a page that looks like this:

The first few sections (Total income, Net income, Taxable income, and Refund or Balance Owing) are on your T1 General. As you scroll down the page, you’ll see the other schedules and forms from your return. Note that not every form will be shown (e.g., form T2125 doesn’t appear).2

Compare the amount on each line in My Account to the amount on your new PDF.

Once you’ve determined what line numbers have changed, scroll back to the top of the page and click on “Change this return”.

You should now see a page that looks like this:

The tab that opens has a search box which you can use to search for the line numbers that have changed. You might find it simpler to just click on the tabs that correspond to the relevant section of your return.

Enter any amounts that have changed. In the example below, I’m changing Interest and other investment income (line 121) from $500 to $750.

Note that you can’t change any lines that are calculated (e.g., your total income on line 150). The CRA’s system does this for you.

When you’re ready to confirm and submit the changes, the CRA may display “errors” or “warnings”. Errors stop you from making a change until you provide additional information, while warnings give you the opportunity to add additional information that may be applicable to you.

After submitting your changes, you may have an amount owing. You can send money to the CRA through your bank, similar to how you pay bills. Simply add the CRA as a payee with your SIN as the account number.

You can confirm your changes and payment by checking My Account.

If you don’t use My Account, you can fill out a T1-ADJ form and mail it to the CRA.3

Any Questions?

If you have any questions about the nitty gritty of changing your return, send us a message on Facebook or Twitter. We’ve integrated with a number of popular social networks, so everyone you know—and everyone you don’t know—is just a click away.

Twitter is literally everywhere

Maybe there is a specific amount you’re proud of—like how much you contributed to your RRSP, or your total income. Why not share your accomplishments? We’ve added tweet buttons to every input box so you can tweet the line number and value as soon as you’ve entered it—and before you have any second thoughts about not sharing it.

Share all the things

Don’t you hate it when you forget to share something? Well, don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with Facebook “frictionless sharing”. You may have already seen this kind of sharing in your activity feed—for example, when someone listens to a song or buys something from an online store. By simply using our app, we’ll share your activity with your Facebook friends so they can follow along with your tax preparation experience.

Look at this Instagram

For our more artistic users, we also have Instagram support. You’ve seen hundreds of pictures of feet at the beach, foam art in cups of coffee, and self-portraits shot using a bathroom mirror. Break up the monotony of your Instagram feed with your tax slips. Just think about how envious your friends will be when they see your Lo-Fi T4 slip in their feed. You can choose from any of your favourite Instagram photo filters and frames.

We can’t wait for you to try these new features out. Not only will this make doing your taxes more social than ever before, but it will allow us to finally tell other technology entrepreneurs about SimpleTax without putting them to sleep.

If you don’t yet see these exciting new features in your account, please be patient as we’re rolling this out as quickly as we can (see update, below). While you’re waiting, you can share this blog post with everyone you know. Be sure to use the hashtags: #simpletax #oversharing #aprilfools.

Update: Due to technical difficulties, we will be indefinitely postponing the release of Taxes With Friends. Please continue to enjoy the current, antisocial version.

More posts in our archives

SimpleTax is coming soon.
