for the man<MH376> said<MH559> to us, ‘You will not see<MH7200> my face<MH6440> unless<MH1115> your brother<MH251> is with you.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then Israel<MH3478> said<MH559>, “Why<MH4100> did you treat<MH7489a> me so badly<MH7489a>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>by telling<MH5046> the man<MH376> whether you still<MH5750> had <i>another</i> brother<MH251>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>But they said<MH559>, “The man<MH376> specifically<MH7592> asked<MH7592> about us and our relatives<MH4138>, saying<MH559>, ‘Is your father<MH1> still<MH5750> alive<MH2416a>? Have<MH3426> you <i>another</i> brother<MH251>?’ So we <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>answered<MH5046> his questions<MH1697>. Could we possibly<MH3045> know<MH3045> that he would say<MH559>, ‘Bring<MH3381> your brother<MH251> down<MH3381>’?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>So Judah<MH3063> said<MH559> to his father<MH1> Israel<MH3478>, “Send<MH7971> the boy<MH5288> with me and we will arise<MH6965> and go<MH1980>, so that we may live<MH2421a> and not die<MH4191>, we as<MH1571> well<MH1571> as<MH1571> you and our little<MH2945> ones<MH2945>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>I myself<MH595> will take<MH6148> responsibility<MH6148> for him! You may demand<MH1245> him back<MH1245> from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>me. If<MH518> I do not bring<MH935> him <i>back</i> to you and present<MH3322, 6640> him to you, then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>you can let me take<MH2398> the blame<MH2398> forever<MH3605, 3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For if<MH3884a> we had not delayed<MH4102>, surely<MH3588> by now<MH6258> we could have returned<MH7725> twice<MH6471>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then their father<MH1> Israel<MH3478> said<MH559> to them, “If<MH518> <i>it must be</i> so<MH3651>, then<MH645> do<MH6213a> this<MH2088>: take<MH3947> some<MH4480> of the best<MH2173> products<MH2173> of the land<MH776> in your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>bags<MH3627>, and carry<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the man<MH376> as a gift<MH4503>, a little<MH4592> balsam<MH6875> and a little<MH4592> honey<MH1706>, labdanum<MH5219> resin<MH5219> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>myrrh<MH3910>, pistachio<MH992> nuts<MH992> and almonds<MH8247>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And take<MH3947> double<MH4932> <i>the</i> money<MH3701> in your hand<MH3027>, and take<MH7725> back<MH7725> in your hand<MH3027> the money<MH3701> that was returned<MH7725> in the opening<MH6310> of your sacks<MH572>; perhaps<MH194> it was a mistake<MH4870>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Take<MH3947> your brother<MH251> also, and arise<MH6965>, return<MH7725> to the man<MH376>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>and may <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>God<MH410> Almighty<MH7706b> grant<MH5414> you compassion<MH7356> in the sight<MH6440> of the man<MH376>, so that he will release<MH7971> to you your other<MH312> brother<MH251> and Benjamin<MH1144>. And as for me, if<MH834> I am bereaved<MH7921> of<MH7921> my sons<MH7921>, I am bereaved<MH7921>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>So the men<MH376> took<MH3947> this<MH2088> gift<MH4503>, and they took<MH3947> double<MH4932> <i>the</i> money<MH3701> in their hand<MH3027>, and Benjamin<MH1144>; then they set<MH6965> out<MH6965> and went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to Egypt<MH4714>, and stood<MH5975> before<MH6440> Joseph<MH3130>. <p class="hdg">Joseph Sees Benjamin</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>When Joseph<MH3130> saw<MH7200> Benjamin<MH1144> with them, he said<MH559> to his house<MH1004> steward<MH834, 5921>, “Bring<MH935> the men<MH376> into the house<MH1004>, and slaughter<MH2873> an animal<MH2874> and make<MH3559> preparations<MH3559>; for the men<MH376> are to dine<MH398> with me at noon<MH6672a>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So the man<MH376> did<MH6213a> as Joseph<MH3130> said<MH559>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>brought<MH935> the men<MH376> to Joseph’s<MH3130> house<MH1004>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now the men<MH376> were<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>, because<MH3588> they were brought<MH935> to Joseph’s<MH3130> house<MH1004>; and they said<MH559>, “<i>It is</i> because<MH5921, 1697> of the money<MH3701> that was returned<MH7725> in our sacks<MH572> the first<MH8462> time<MH8462> that we are being brought<MH935> in<MH935>, so that he may <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>attack<MH1556> us and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>overpower<MH5307> us, and take<MH3947> us as slaves<MH5650> with our donkeys<MH2543>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>So they approached<MH5066> Joseph’s<MH3130> house<MH1004> steward<MH376, 834, 5921>, and spoke<MH1696> to him at the entrance<MH6607> of the house<MH1004>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>and said<MH559>, “Oh<MH994a>, my lord<MH113>, we indeed<MH3381> came<MH3381> down<MH3381> the first<MH8462> time<MH8462> to buy<MH7666> food<MH400>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>and it happened<MH1961> when<MH3588> we came<MH935> to the campsite<MH4411>, that we opened<MH6605a> our sacks<MH572>, and behold<MH2009>, each<MH376> man’s<MH376> money<MH3701> was in the opening<MH6310> of his sack<MH572>, our money<MH3701> in <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>full<MH4948>. So we have brought<MH7725> it back<MH7725> in our hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>We have also brought<MH3381> down<MH3381> other<MH312> money<MH3701> in our hand<MH3027> to buy<MH7666> food<MH400>; we do not know<MH3045> who<MH4310> put<MH7760> our money<MH3701> in our sacks<MH572>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>But he said<MH559>, “Peace<MH7965> be to you, do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>. Your God<MH430> and the God<MH430> of your father<MH1> has given<MH5414> you treasure<MH4301> in your sacks<MH572>; your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>money<MH3701> was in my possession<MH935>.” Then he brought<MH3318> Simeon<MH8095> out<MH3318> to them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Then the man<MH376> brought<MH935> the men<MH376> into Joseph’s<MH3130> house<MH1004> and gave<MH5414> them water<MH4325>, and they washed<MH7364> their feet<MH7272>; and he gave<MH5414> their donkeys<MH2543> feed<MH4554>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>So they prepared<MH3559> the gift<MH4503> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>for Joseph’s<MH3130> arrival<MH935> at noon<MH6672a>; for they had heard<MH8085> that they were to eat<MH398> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>a meal<MH3899> there<MH8033>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>When Joseph<MH3130> came<MH935> home<MH1004>, they brought<MH935> into the house<MH1004> to him the gift<MH4503> which<MH834> was in their hand<MH3027>, and they bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to the ground<MH776> before him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Then he asked<MH7592> them about their welfare<MH7965>, and said<MH559>, “Is your old<MH2205> father<MH1> well<MH7965>, of whom<MH834> you spoke<MH559>? Is he still<MH5750> alive<MH2416a>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>And they said<MH559>, “Your servant<MH5650> our father<MH1> is well<MH7965>; he is still<MH5750> alive<MH2416a>.” Then they bowed<MH6915> down<MH6915> <i>again</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>in<MH2331c> homage<MH2331c>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And as he raised<MH5375> his eyes<MH5869> and saw<MH7200> his brother<MH251> Benjamin<MH1144>, his mother’s<MH517> son<MH1121>, he said<MH559>, “Is this<MH2088> your youngest<MH6996b> brother<MH251>, of whom<MH834> you spoke<MH559> to me?” Then he said<MH559>, “May God<MH430> be<MH2603a> gracious<MH2603a> to you, my son<MH1121>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>Joseph<MH3130> then hurried<MH4116> <i>out,</i> for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>he was deeply<MH7356> stirred<MH3648> over<MH413> his brother<MH251>, and he looked<MH1245> <i>for a place</i> to weep<MH1058>; so he entered<MH935> his chamber<MH2315> and wept<MH1058> there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then he washed<MH7364> his face<MH6440> and came<MH3318> out<MH3318>; and he controlled<MH662> himself and said<MH559>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>Serve<MH7760> the meal<MH3899>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>Then they served<MH7760> him by<MH905> himself<MH905>, and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>Joseph’s brothers by<MH905> themselves<MH905>, and the Egyptians<MH4713> who ate<MH398> with him by<MH905> themselves<MH905>; because<MH3588> the Egyptians<MH4713> could<MH3201> not eat<MH398> bread<MH3899> with the Hebrews<MH5680>, for that is an abomination<MH8441> to the Egyptians<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>Now they <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>were seated<MH3427> before<MH6440> him, from the firstborn<MH1060> according to his birthright<MH1062> to the youngest<MH6810> according to his youth<MH6812>, and the men<MH376> looked<MH8539> at one<MH376> another<MH7453> in<MH8539> astonishment<MH8539>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/genesis/43-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>Then he took<MH5375> portions<MH4864> to them from <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>his own table<MH6440>, but Benjamin’s<MH1144> portion<MH4864> was<MH7235a> five<MH2568> times<MH3027> as much<MH7235a> as any<MH3605> of theirs.
