however, God<MH430> did not allow<MH5414> him to do<MH7489a> me harm<MH7489a>. <a href="/genesis/31-8.htm">8</a>If<MH518> he said<MH559> this<MH3541>: ‘The speckled<MH5348> shall be your wages<MH7939>,’ then all<MH3605> the flock<MH6629> delivered<MH3205> speckled<MH5348>; and if<MH518> he said<MH559> this<MH3541>: ‘The striped<MH6124> shall be your wages<MH7939>,’ then all<MH3605> the flock<MH6629> delivered<MH3205> striped<MH6124>. <a href="/genesis/31-9.htm">9</a>So God<MH430> has taken<MH5337> away<MH5337> your father’s<MH1> livestock<MH4735> and given<MH5414> them to me. <a href="/genesis/31-10.htm">10</a>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> at the time<MH6256> when the flock<MH6629> was breeding<MH3179> that I raised<MH5375> my eyes<MH5869> and saw<MH7200> in a dream<MH2472>—and behold<MH2009>—the male<MH6260> goats<MH6260> that were <a href="#fn">[e]</a>mating<MH5927> were striped<MH6124>, speckled<MH5348>, or mottled<MH1261>. <a href="/genesis/31-11.htm">11</a>Then the angel<MH4397> of God<MH430> said<MH559> to me in the dream<MH2472>, ‘Jacob<MH3290>’; and I said<MH559>, ‘Here<MH2009> I am.’ <a href="/genesis/31-12.htm">12</a>He said<MH559>, ‘Now<MH4994> raise<MH5375> your eyes<MH5869> and see<MH7200> that all<MH3605> the male<MH6260> goats<MH6260> that are <a href="#fn">[f]</a>mating<MH5927> are striped<MH6124>, speckled<MH5348>, or mottled<MH1261>; for I have seen<MH7200> everything<MH3605> that Laban<MH3837a> has been doing<MH6213a> to you. <a href="/genesis/31-13.htm">13</a>I am the God<MH410> of Bethel<MH1008>, where<MH834, 8033> you anointed<MH4886> a memorial<MH4676> stone<MH4676>, where<MH834, 8033> you made<MH5087> a vow<MH5088> to Me; now<MH6258> arise<MH6965>, <a href="#fn">[g]</a>leave<MH3318, 4480> this<MH2088> land<MH776>, and return<MH7725> to the land<MH776> of your birth<MH4138>.’” <a href="/genesis/31-14.htm">14</a>Rachel<MH7354> and Leah<MH3812> said<MH559> to him, “Do we still<MH5750> have any share<MH2506> or inheritance<MH5159> in our father’s<MH1> house<MH1004>? <a href="/genesis/31-15.htm">15</a>Are we not regarded<MH2803> by him as foreigners<MH5237>? For he has sold<MH4376> us, and has also<MH1571> <a href="#fn">[h]</a>entirely<MH398> consumed<MH398> our <a href="#fn">[i]</a>purchase<MH3701> price<MH3701>. <a href="/genesis/31-16.htm">16</a>Surely<MH3588> all<MH3605> the wealth<MH6239> which<MH834> God<MH430> has taken<MH5337> away<MH5337> from our father<MH1> belongs to us and our children<MH1121>; now<MH6258> then, do<MH6213a> whatever<MH3605, 834> God<MH430> has told<MH559> you.” <a href="/genesis/31-17.htm">17</a>Then Jacob<MH3290> stood<MH6965> up<MH6965> and put<MH5375> his children<MH1121> and his wives<MH802> on camels<MH1581>; <a href="/genesis/31-18.htm">18</a>and he drove<MH5090a> away<MH5090a> all<MH3605> his livestock<MH4735> and all<MH3605> his property<MH7399> which<MH834> he had acquired<MH7408>, the livestock<MH4735> he possessed<MH7075> which<MH834> he had acquired<MH7408> in Paddan-aram<MH6307>, to go<MH935> to the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a> to his father<MH1> Isaac<MH3327>. <a href="/genesis/31-19.htm">19</a>Laban<MH3837a> had gone<MH1980> to shear<MH1494> his flock<MH6629>, and Rachel<MH7354> stole<MH1589> the <a href="#fn">[j]</a>household<MH8655> idols<MH8655> that were her father’s<MH1>. <a href="/genesis/31-20.htm">20</a>And Jacob<MH3290> <a href="#fn">[k]</a>deceived<MH1589> Laban<MH3837a> the Aramean<MH761> by not telling<MH5046> him that he was fleeing<MH1272>. <a href="/genesis/31-21.htm">21</a>So he fled<MH1272> with all<MH3605> that he had; and he got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and crossed<MH5674a> the Euphrates River<MH5104>, and set<MH7760> <a href="#fn">[l]</a>out for the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Gilead<MH1568>. Laban Pursues Jacob<a href="/genesis/31-22.htm">22</a>When Laban<MH3837a> was informed<MH5046> on the third<MH7992> day<MH3117> that Jacob<MH3290> had fled<MH1272>, <a href="/genesis/31-23.htm">23</a>he took<MH3947> his kinsmen<MH251> with him and pursued<MH7291> him a distance of seven<MH7651> days’<MH3117> journey<MH1870>, and he overtook<MH1692> him in the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Gilead<MH1568>. <a href="/genesis/31-24.htm">24</a>However, God<MH430> came<MH935> to Laban<MH3837a> the Aramean<MH761> in a dream<MH2472> of the night<MH3915> and said<MH559> to him, “<a href="#fn">[m]</a>Be<MH8104> careful<MH8104> that you do not speak<MH1696> to Jacob<MH3290> either<MH4480> good<MH2896a> or<MH5704> bad<MH7451a>.” <a href="/genesis/31-25.htm">25</a>And Laban<MH3837a> caught<MH5381> up<MH5381> with Jacob<MH3290>. Now Jacob<MH3290> had pitched<MH8628> his tent<MH168> in the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022>, and Laban<MH3837a> with his kinsmen<MH251> camped<MH8628> in the hill<MH2022> country<MH2022> of Gilead<MH1568>. <a href="/genesis/31-26.htm">26</a>Then Laban<MH3837a> said<MH559> to Jacob<MH3290>, “What<MH4100> have you done<MH6213a> <a href="#fn">[n]</a>by deceiving<MH1589> me and carrying<MH5090a> away<MH5090a> my daughters<MH1323> like captives<MH7617> of the sword<MH2719>? <a href="/genesis/31-27.htm">27</a>Why<MH4100> did you flee<MH1272> secretly<MH2244> and <a href="#fn">[o]</a>deceive<MH1589> me, and did not tell<MH5046> me, so that I might have sent<MH7971> you away<MH7971> with joy<MH8057> and with songs<MH7892a>, with tambourine<MH8596> and with lyre<MH3658>; <a href="/genesis/31-28.htm">28</a>and did not allow<MH5203> me to kiss<MH5401a> my <a href="#fn">[p]</a>grandchildren<MH1121> and my daughters<MH1323>? Now<MH6258> you have done<MH5528, 6213a> foolishly<MH5528>. <a href="/genesis/31-29.htm">29</a>It is in <a href="#fn">[q]</a>my power<MH3027> to do<MH6213a> you harm<MH7451b>, but the God<MH430> of your father<MH1> spoke<MH559> to me last<MH570> night<MH570>, saying<MH559>, ‘<a href="#fn">[r]</a>Be<MH8104> careful<MH8104> not to speak<MH1696> either<MH4480> good<MH2896a> or<MH5704> bad<MH7451a> to Jacob<MH3290>.’ <a href="/genesis/31-30.htm">30</a>Now<MH6258> you have indeed<MH1980> gone<MH1980> away because<MH3588> you longed<MH3700> greatly<MH3700> for your father’s<MH1> house<MH1004>; but why<MH4100> did you steal<MH1589> my gods<MH430>?” <a href="/genesis/31-31.htm">31</a>Then Jacob<MH3290> replied<MH6030a> to Laban<MH3837a>, “Because<MH3588> I was<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a>, for I thought<MH559> that you would take<MH1497> your daughters<MH1323> from me by<MH1497> force<MH1497>. <a href="/genesis/31-32.htm">32</a>The one with whom<MH834> you find<MH4672> your gods<MH430> shall not live<MH2421a>; in the presence<MH5048> of our relatives<MH251> <a href="#fn">[s]</a>point<MH5234> out<MH5234> what<MH4100> is yours <a href="#fn">[t]</a>among<MH5973> my belongings<MH5973> and take<MH3947> it for yourself.” Now Jacob<MH3290> did not know<MH3045> that Rachel<MH7354> had stolen<MH1589> them. <a href="/genesis/31-33.htm">33</a>So Laban<MH3837a> went<MH935> into Jacob’s<MH3290> tent<MH168>, and into Leah’s<MH3812> tent<MH168>, and into the tent<MH168> of the two<MH8147> slave<MH519> women<MH519>, but he did not find<MH4672> them. Then he went<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Leah’s<MH3812> tent<MH168> and entered<MH935> Rachel’s<MH7354> tent<MH168>. <a href="/genesis/31-34.htm">34</a>Now Rachel<MH7354> had taken<MH3947> the <a href="#fn">[u]</a>household<MH8655> idols<MH8655> and put<MH7760> them in the camel’s<MH1581> saddlebag<MH3733a>, and she sat<MH3427> on them. So Laban<MH3837a> searched<MH4959> through<MH4959> all<MH3605> the tent<MH168>, but did not find<MH4672> them. <a href="/genesis/31-35.htm">35</a>And she said<MH559> to her father<MH1>, “May my lord<MH113> not be<MH2734> angry<MH2734> that I cannot<MH3201, 3808> stand<MH6965> in your presence<MH4480, 6440>, because<MH3588> the <a href="#fn">[v]</a>way<MH1870> of women<MH802> is upon me.” So he searched<MH2664> but did not find<MH4672> the <a href="#fn">[w]</a>household<MH8655> idols<MH8655>. <a href="/genesis/31-36.htm">36</a>Then Jacob<MH3290> became<MH2734> angry<MH2734> and argued<MH7378> with Laban<MH3837a>; and Jacob<MH3290> said<MH559> to Laban<MH3837a>, “What<MH4100> is my offense<MH6588>? What<MH4100> is my sin<MH2403b> that you have hotly<MH1814> pursued<MH310, 1814> me? <a href="/genesis/31-37.htm">37</a>Though<MH3588> you have searched<MH4959> through<MH4959> all<MH3605> my property<MH3627>, what<MH4100> have you found<MH4672> of all<MH3605> your household<MH1004> property<MH3627>? Set<MH7760> it here<MH3541> in front<MH5048> of my relatives<MH251> and your relatives<MH251>, so that they may decide<MH3198> between<MH996> the two<MH8147> of us. <a href="/genesis/31-38.htm">38</a>For these<MH2088> twenty<MH6242> years<MH8141> I have been with you; your ewes<MH7353> and your female<MH5795> goats<MH5795> have not miscarried<MH7921>, nor<MH3808> have I eaten<MH398> the rams<MH352a> of your flocks<MH6629>. <a href="/genesis/31-39.htm">39</a>I did not even bring<MH935> to you that which was torn<MH2966> by wild animals; I took<MH2398> the loss<MH2398> myself<MH595>. You demanded<MH1245> it of my hand<MH3027> whether stolen<MH1589> by day<MH3117> or stolen<MH1589> by night<MH3915>. <a href="/genesis/31-40.htm">40</a>This is how I was: by day<MH3117> the <a href="#fn">[x]</a>heat<MH2721a> consumed<MH398> me and the frost<MH7140> by night<MH3915>, and my sleep<MH8142> fled<MH5074> from my eyes<MH5869>. <a href="/genesis/31-41.htm">41</a>For these<MH2088> twenty<MH6242> years<MH8141> I have been in your house<MH1004>; I served<MH5647> you fourteen<MH702, 6240> years<MH8141> for your two<MH8147> daughters<MH1323>, and six<MH8337a> years<MH8141> for your flock<MH6629>, and you changed<MH2498> my wages<MH4909> ten<MH6235> times<MH4489>. <a href="/genesis/31-42.htm">42</a>If<MH3884a> the God<MH430> of my father<MH1>, the God<MH430> of Abraham<MH85> and the fear<MH6343> of Isaac<MH3327>, had<MH1961> not been<MH1961> for me, surely<MH3588> now<MH6258> you would have sent<MH7971> me away<MH7971> empty-handed<MH7387>. God<MH430> has seen<MH7200> my affliction<MH6040a> and the labor<MH3018> of my hands<MH3709>, so He rendered<MH3198> judgment<MH3198> last<MH570> night<MH570>.” The Covenant of Mizpah<a href="/genesis/31-43.htm">43</a>Then Laban<MH3837a> replied<MH6030a> to Jacob<MH3290>, “The daughters<MH1323> are my daughters<MH1323>, the <a href="#fn">[y]</a>children<MH1121> are my <a href="#fn">[z]</a>grandchildren<MH1121>, the flocks<MH6629> are my flocks<MH6629>, and everything<MH3605> that you see<MH7200> is mine. But what<MH4100> can I do<MH6213a> this day<MH3117> to these<MH428> daughters<MH1323> of mine or<MH176> to their children<MH1121> to whom<MH834> they have given<MH3205> birth<MH3205>? <a href="/genesis/31-44.htm">44</a>So now<MH6258> come<MH1980>, let’s make<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285>, <a href="#fn">[aa]</a>you and I, and it shall be a witness<MH5707> between<MH996> <a href="#fn">[ab]</a>you and me.” <a href="/genesis/31-45.htm">45</a>Then Jacob<MH3290> took<MH3947> a stone<MH68> and set<MH7311> it up<MH7311> as a memorial<MH4676> stone<MH4676>. <a href="/genesis/31-46.htm">46</a>Jacob<MH3290> said<MH559> to his relatives<MH251>, “Gather<MH3950> stones<MH68>.” So they took<MH3947> stones<MH68> and made<MH6213a> a heap<MH1530>, and they ate<MH398> there<MH8033> by the heap<MH1530>. <a href="/genesis/31-47.htm">47</a>Now Laban<MH3837a> called<MH7121> it <a href="#fn">[ac]</a>Jegar-sahadutha<MH3026>, but Jacob<MH3290> called<MH7121> it <a href="#fn">[ad]</a>Galeed<MH1567>. <a href="/genesis/31-48.htm">48</a>Laban<MH3837a> said<MH559>, “This<MH2088> heap<MH1530> is a witness<MH5707> between<MH996> <a href="#fn">[ae]</a>you and me this day<MH3117>.” Therefore<MH5921, 3651> it was named<MH7121, 8034> Galeed<MH1567>, <a href="/genesis/31-49.htm">49</a>and <a href="#fn">[af]</a>Mizpah<MH4709>, for he said<MH559>, “May the LORD<MH3068> keep<MH6822> watch<MH6822> between<MH996> <a href="#fn">[ag]</a>you and me when<MH3588> we are <a href="#fn">[ah]</a>absent<MH5641> one<MH376> from the other<MH7453>. <a href="/genesis/31-50.htm">50</a>If<MH518> you mistreat<MH6031a> my daughters<MH1323>, or if<MH518> you take<MH3947> wives<MH802> besides<MH5921> my daughters<MH1323>, although no<MH369> one<MH376> is with us, see<MH7200>, God<MH430> is witness<MH5707> between<MH996> <a href="#fn">[ai]</a>you and me.” <a href="/genesis/31-51.htm">51</a>Laban<MH3837a> also said<MH559> to Jacob<MH3290>, “Behold<MH2009> this<MH2088> heap<MH1530> and behold<MH2009> the memorial<MH4676> stone<MH4676> which<MH834> I have set<MH3384> between<MH996> <a href="#fn">[aj]</a>you and me. <a href="/genesis/31-52.htm">52</a>This<MH2088> heap<MH1530> is a witness<MH5707>, and the memorial<MH4676> stone<MH4676> is a witness<MH5713a>, that I will not pass<MH5674a> by<MH5674a> this<MH2088> heap<MH1530> to you for harm, and you will not pass<MH5674a> by<MH5674a> this<MH2088> heap<MH1530> and this<MH2088> memorial<MH4676> stone<MH4676> to me, for harm<MH7463a>. <a href="/genesis/31-53.htm">53</a>The God<MH430> of Abraham<MH85> and the God<MH430> of Nahor<MH5152>, the God<MH430> of their father<MH1>, judge<MH8199> between<MH996> us.” So Jacob<MH3290> swore<MH7650> by the fear<MH6343> of his father<MH1> Isaac<MH3327>. <a href="/genesis/31-54.htm">54</a>Then Jacob<MH3290> offered<MH2076> a sacrifice<MH2077> on the mountain<MH2022>, and called<MH7121> his relatives<MH251> to <a href="#fn">[ak]</a>the meal<MH398, 3899>; and they ate<MH398> <a href="#fn">[al]</a>the meal<MH3899> and spent<MH3885a> the<MH3885a> night<MH3885a> on the mountain<MH2022>. <a href="/genesis/31-55.htm">55</a><a href="#fn">[am]</a>Then early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242> Laban<MH3837a> got<MH7925> up<MH7925>, and kissed<MH5401a> his <a href="#fn">[an]</a>grandchildren<MH1121> and his daughters<MH1323> and blessed<MH1288> them.
