contain various types of contaminants. Possible re-uses of such materials in civil engineering appear as sustainable solutions. The French SEDIBRIC project (valorisation de SEDIments en BRIQues et tuiles) aims to replace a part of natural clays with dredged sediments in the preparation of fired bricks. The potential environmental impact of this re-use is explored to complete the technical and economic feasibility of the study. As part of the project, we investigate the environmental availability of metallic elements (Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Mg, Mn, Pb, Ti, and Zn) initially present in the dredged sediments selected for the project. Leaching tests (with H₂O, HCl, or EDTA) are conducted in the sediments than in the final bricks in order to evaluate the possible influence of some steps of the bricks manufacturing (desalination pre-treatment, firing, etc.). The desalination pre-treatment using tap water has no or few impacts on the environmental availability of the studied elements. On the opposite, the firing process (900°C) affects the value of the total content of elements detected in the bricks but also the environmental availability for various elements. For instance, Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn are stabilized in the bricks, whereas the availability of some other elements (i.e., Cr, Ni) increases, depending on the nature of the extracting solution. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=availability" title="availability">availability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bricks" title=" bricks"> bricks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dredged%20sediments" title=" dredged sediments"> dredged sediments</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metals" title=" metals"> metals</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129774/availability-of-metals-in-fired-bricks-incorporating-harbour-sediments" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/129774.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">141</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">8</span> The Use of Seashell by-Products in Pervious Concrete Pavers</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dang%20Hanh%20Nguyen">Dang Hanh Nguyen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nassim%20Sebaibi"> Nassim Sebaibi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohamed%20Boutouil"> Mohamed Boutouil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lydia%20Leleyter"> Lydia Leleyter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabienne%20Baraud"> Fabienne Baraud</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Pervious concrete is a green alternative to conventional pavements with minimal fine aggregate and a high void content. Pervious concrete allows water to infiltrate through the pavement, thereby reducing the runoff and the requirement for stormwater management systems. Seashell By-Products (SBP) are produced in an important quantity in France and are considered as waste. This work investigated to use SBP in pervious concrete and produce an even more environmentally friendly product, Pervious Concrete Pavers. The research methodology involved substituting the coarse aggregate in the previous concrete mix design with 20%, 40% and 60% SBP. The testing showed that pervious concrete containing less than 40% SBP had strengths, permeability and void content which are comparable to the pervious concrete containing with only natural aggregate. The samples that contained 40% SBP or higher had a significant loss in strength and an increase in permeability and a void content from the control mix pervious concrete. On the basis of the results in this research, it was found that the natural aggregate can be substituted by SBP without affecting the delicate balance of a pervious concrete mix. Additional, it is recommended that the optimum replacement percentage for SBP in pervious concrete is 40 % direct replacement of natural coarse aggregate while maintaining the structural performance and drainage capabilities of the pervious concrete. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seashell%20by-products" title="seashell by-products">seashell by-products</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pervious%20concrete%20pavers" title=" pervious concrete pavers"> pervious concrete pavers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=permeability" title=" permeability"> permeability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mechanical%20strength" title=" mechanical strength"> mechanical strength</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1640/the-use-of-seashell-by-products-in-pervious-concrete-pavers" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/1640.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">483</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">7</span> Use of Chemical Extractions to Estimate the Metals Availability in Bricks Made of Dredged Sediments</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabienne%20Baraud">Fabienne Baraud</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Lydia%20Leleyter"> Lydia Leleyter</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sandra%20Poree"> Sandra Poree</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Melanie%20Lemoine"> Melanie Lemoine</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> SEDIBRIC (valorization de SEDIments en BRIQues et tuiles) is a French project that aims to replace a part of natural clays with dredged sediments in the preparation of fired bricks in order to propose an alternative solution for the management of harbor dredged sediments. The feasibility of such re-use is explored from a technical, economic, and environmental point of view. The present study focuses on the potential environmental impact of various chemical elements (Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Mg, Mn, Pb, Ti, and Zn) that are initially present in the dredged sediments. The total content (after acid digestion) and the environmental availability (estimated by single extractions with various extractants) of these elements are determined in the raw sediments and in the obtained fired bricks. The possible influence of some steps of the manufacturing process (sediment pre-treatment, firing) is also explored. The first results show that the pre-treatment step, which uses tap water to desalinate the raw sediment, does not influence the environmental availability of the studied elements. However, the firing process, performed at 900°C, can affect the amount of some elements detected in the bricks, as well as their environmental availability. We note that for Cr, or Ni, the HCl or EDTA availability was increased in the brick (compared to the availability in the raw sediment). For Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, the HCl and EDTA availability was reduced in the bricks, meaning that these elements were stabilized within the bricks. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bricks" title="bricks">bricks</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chemical%20extraction" title=" chemical extraction"> chemical extraction</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=metals" title=" metals"> metals</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=sediment" title=" sediment"> sediment</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132584/use-of-chemical-extractions-to-estimate-the-metals-availability-in-bricks-made-of-dredged-sediments" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/132584.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">150</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">6</span> Energy-Efficient Internet of Things Communications: A Comparative Study of Long-Term Evolution for Machines and Narrowband Internet of Things Technologies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nassim%20Labdaoui">Nassim Labdaoui</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabienne%20Nouvel"> Fabienne Nouvel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=St%C3%A9phane%20Dutertre"> Stéphane Dutertre</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Internet of Things (IoT) is emerging as a crucial communication technology for the future. Many solutions have been proposed, and among them, licensed operators have put forward LTE-M and NB-IoT. However, implementing these technologies requires a good understanding of the device energy requirements, which can vary depending on the coverage conditions. In this paper, we investigate the power consumption of LTE-M and NB-IoT devices using Ublox SARA-R422S modules based on relevant standards from two French operators. The measurements were conducted under different coverage conditions, and we also present an empirical consumption model based on the different states of the radio modem as per the RRC protocol specifications. Our findings indicate that these technologies can achieve a 5 years operational battery life under certain conditions. Moreover, we conclude that the size of transmitted data does not have a significant impact on the total power consumption of the device under favorable coverage conditions. However, it can quickly influence the battery life of the device under harsh coverage conditions. Overall, this paper offers insights into the power consumption of LTE-M and NBIoT devices and provides useful information for those considering the use of these technologies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=internet%20of%20things" title="internet of things">internet of things</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=LTE-M" title=" LTE-M"> LTE-M</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=NB-IoT" title=" NB-IoT"> NB-IoT</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=MQTT" title=" MQTT"> MQTT</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cellular%20IoT" title=" cellular IoT"> cellular IoT</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=power%20consumption" title=" power consumption"> power consumption</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163932/energy-efficient-internet-of-things-communications-a-comparative-study-of-long-term-evolution-for-machines-and-narrowband-internet-of-things-technologies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/163932.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">142</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">5</span> Epigenetic Mechanisms Involved in the Occurrence and Development of Infectious Diseases</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Frank%20Boris%20Feutmba%20Keutchou">Frank Boris Feutmba Keutchou</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Saurelle%20Fabienne%20Bieghan%20Same"> Saurelle Fabienne Bieghan Same</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Verelle%20Elsa%20Fogang%20Pokam"> Verelle Elsa Fogang Pokam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Charles%20Ursula%20Metapi%20Meikeu"> Charles Ursula Metapi Meikeu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Angel%20Marilyne%20Messop%20Nzomo"> Angel Marilyne Messop Nzomo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ousman%20Tamgue"> Ousman Tamgue</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Infectious diseases are one of the most important causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. These diseases are caused by micro-pathogenic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. Heritable changes in gene expression that do not involve changes to the underlying DNA sequence are referred to as epigenetics. Emerging evidence suggests that epigenetic mechanisms are important in the emergence and progression of infectious diseases. Pathogens can manipulate host epigenetic machinery to promote their own replication and evade immune responses. The Human Genome Project has provided new opportunities for developing better tools for the diagnosis and identification of target genes. Several epigenetic modifications, such as DNA methylation, histone modifications, and non-coding RNA expression, have been shown to influence infectious disease outcomes. Understanding the epigenetic mechanisms underlying infectious diseases may result in the progression of new therapeutic approaches focusing on host-pathogen interactions. The goal of this study is to show how different infectious agents interact with host cells after infection. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=epigenetic" title="epigenetic">epigenetic</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=infectious%20disease" title=" infectious disease"> infectious disease</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=micro-pathogenic%20organism" title=" micro-pathogenic organism"> micro-pathogenic organism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=phenotype" title=" phenotype"> phenotype</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/164754/epigenetic-mechanisms-involved-in-the-occurrence-and-development-of-infectious-diseases" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/164754.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">80</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">4</span> Correlations and Impacts Of Optimal Rearing Parameters on Nutritional Value Of Mealworm (Tenebrio Molitor)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabienne%20Vozy">Fabienne Vozy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Anick%20Lepage"> Anick Lepage</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Insects are displaying high nutritional value, low greenhouse gas emissions, low land use requirements and high food conversion efficiency. They can contribute to the food chain and be one of many solutions to protein shortages. Currently, in North America, nutritional entomology is under-developed and the needs to better understand its benefits remain to convince large-scale producers and consumers (both for human and agricultural needs). As such, large-scale production of mealworms offers a promising alternative to replacing traditional sources of protein and fatty acids. To proceed orderly, it is required to collect more data on the nutritional values of insects such as, a) Evaluate the diets of insects to improve their dietary value; b) Test the breeding conditions to optimize yields; c) Evaluate the use of by-products and organic residues as sources of food. Among the featured technical parameters, relative humidity (RH) percentage and temperature, optimal substrates and hydration sources are critical elements, thus establishing potential benchmarks for to optimize conversion rates of protein and fatty acids. This research is to establish the combination of the most influential rearing parameters with local food residues, to correlate the findings with the nutritional value of the larvae harvested. 125 same-monthly old adults/replica are randomly selected in the mealworm breeding pool then placed to oviposit in growth chambers preset at 26°C and 65% RH. Adults are removed after 7 days. Larvae are harvested upon the apparition of the first nymphosis signs and batches, are analyzed for their nutritional values using wet chemistry analysis. The first samples analyses include total weight of both fresh and dried larvae, residual humidity, crude proteins (CP%), and crude fats (CF%). Further analyses are scheduled to include soluble proteins and fatty acids. Although they are consistent with previous published data, the preliminary results show no significant differences between treatments for any type of analysis. Nutritional properties of each substrate combination have yet allowed to discriminate the most effective residue recipe. Technical issues such as the particles’ size of the various substrate combinations and larvae screen compatibility are to be investigated since it induced a variable percentage of lost larvae upon harvesting. To address those methodological issues are key to develop a standardized efficient procedure. The aim is to provide producers with easily reproducible conditions, without incurring additional excessive expenditure on their part in terms of equipment and workforce. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=entomophagy" title="entomophagy">entomophagy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nutritional%20value" title=" nutritional value"> nutritional value</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rearing%20parameters%20optimization" title=" rearing parameters optimization"> rearing parameters optimization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Tenebrio%20molitor" title=" Tenebrio molitor"> Tenebrio molitor</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136092/correlations-and-impacts-of-optimal-rearing-parameters-on-nutritional-value-of-mealworm-tenebrio-molitor" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/136092.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">111</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">3</span> Motives for Reshoring from China to Europe: A Hierarchical Classification of Companies</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabienne%20Fel">Fabienne Fel</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eric%20Griette"> Eric Griette</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Reshoring, whether concerning back-reshoring or near-reshoring, is a quite recent phenomenon. Despite the economic and political interest of this topic, academic research questioning determinants of reshoring remains rare. Our paper aims at contributing to fill this gap. In order to better understand the reasons for reshoring, we conducted a study among 280 French firms during spring 2016, three-quarters of which sourced, or source, in China. 105 firms in the sample have reshored all or part of their Chinese production or supply in recent years, and we aimed to establish a typology of the motives that drove them to this decision. We asked our respondents about the history of their Chinese supplies, their current reshoring strategies, and their motivations. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS 22 and SPAD 8. Our results show that change in commercial and financial terms with China is the first motive explaining the current reshoring movement from this country (it applies to 54% of our respondents). A change in corporate strategy is the second motive (30% of our respondents); the reshoring decision follows a change in companies’ strategies (upgrading, implementation of a CSR policy, or a 'lean management' strategy). The third motive (14% of our sample) is a mere correction of the initial offshoring decision, considered as a mistake (under-estimation of hidden costs, non-quality and non-responsiveness problems). Some authors emphasize that developing a short supply chain, involving geographic proximity between design and production, gives a competitive advantage to companies wishing to offer innovative products. Admittedly 40% of our respondents indicate that this motive could have played a part in their decision to reshore, but this reason was not enough for any of them and is not an intrinsic motive leading to leaving Chinese suppliers. Having questioned our respondents about the importance given to various problems leading them to reshore, we then performed a Principal Components Analysis (PCA), associated with an Ascending Hierarchical Classification (AHC), based on Ward criterion, so as to point out more specific motivations. Three main classes of companies should be distinguished: -The 'Cost Killers' (23% of the sample), which reshore their supplies from China only because of higher procurement costs and so as to find lower costs elsewhere. -The 'Realists' (50% of the sample), giving equal weight or importance to increasing procurement costs in China and to the quality of their supplies (to a large extend). Companies being part of this class tend to take advantage of this changing environment to change their procurement strategy, seeking suppliers offering better quality and responsiveness. - The 'Voluntarists' (26% of the sample), which choose to reshore their Chinese supplies regardless of higher Chinese costs, to obtain better quality and greater responsiveness. We emphasize that if the main driver for reshoring from China is indeed higher local costs, it is should not be regarded as an exclusive motivation; 77% of the companies in the sample, are also seeking, sometimes exclusively, more reactive suppliers, liable to quality, respect for the environment and intellectual property. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=China" title="China">China</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=procurement" title=" procurement"> procurement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reshoring" title=" reshoring"> reshoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strategy" title=" strategy"> strategy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=supplies" title=" supplies"> supplies</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65689/motives-for-reshoring-from-china-to-europe-a-hierarchical-classification-of-companies" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/65689.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">326</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">2</span> Fully Instrumented Small-Scale Fire Resistance Benches for Aeronautical Composites Assessment </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabienne%20Samyn">Fabienne Samyn</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Pauline%20Tranchard"> Pauline Tranchard</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sophie%20Duquesne"> Sophie Duquesne</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emilie%20Goncalves"> Emilie Goncalves</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bruno%20Estebe"> Bruno Estebe</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Serge%20Boubigot"> Serge Boubigot</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Stringent fire safety regulations are enforced in the aeronautical industry due to the consequences that potential fire event on an aircraft might imply. This is so much true that the fire issue is considered right from the design of the aircraft structure. Due to the incorporation of an increasing amount of polymer matrix composites in replacement of more conventional materials like metals, the nature of the fire risks is changing. The choice of materials used is consequently of prime importance as well as the evaluation of its resistance to fire. The fire testing is mostly done using the so-called certification tests according to standards such as the ISO2685:1998(E). The latter describes a protocol to evaluate the fire resistance of structures located in fire zone (ability to withstand fire for 5min). The test consists in exposing an at least 300x300mm² sample to an 1100°C propane flame with a calibrated heat flux of 116kW/m². This type of test is time-consuming, expensive and gives access to limited information in terms of fire behavior of the materials (pass or fail test). Consequently, it can barely be used for material development purposes. In this context, the laboratory UMET in collaboration with industrial partners has developed a horizontal and a vertical small-scale instrumented fire benches for the characterization of the fire behavior of composites. The benches using smaller samples (no more than 150x150mm²) enables to cut downs costs and hence to increase sampling throughput. However, the main added value of our benches is the instrumentation used to collect useful information to understand the behavior of the materials. Indeed, measurements of the sample backside temperature are performed using IR camera in both configurations. In addition, for the vertical set up, a complete characterization of the degradation process, can be achieved via mass loss measurements and quantification of the gasses released during the tests. These benches have been used to characterize and study the fire behavior of aeronautical carbon/epoxy composites. The horizontal set up has been used in particular to study the performances and durability of protective intumescent coating on 2mm thick 2D laminates. The efficiency of this approach has been validated, and the optimized coating thickness has been determined as well as the performances after aging. Reductions of the performances after aging were attributed to the migration of some of the coating additives. The vertical set up has enabled to investigate the degradation process of composites under fire. An isotropic and a unidirectional 4mm thick laminates have been characterized using the bench and post-fire analyses. The mass loss measurements and the gas phase analyses of both composites do not present significant differences unlike the temperature profiles in the thickness of the samples. The differences have been attributed to differences of thermal conductivity as well as delamination that is much more pronounced for the isotropic composite (observed on the IR-images). This has been confirmed by X-ray microtomography. The developed benches have proven to be valuable tools to develop fire safe composites. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aeronautical%20carbon%2Fepoxy%20composite" title="aeronautical carbon/epoxy composite">aeronautical carbon/epoxy composite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=durability" title=" durability"> durability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intumescent%20coating" title=" intumescent coating"> intumescent coating</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=small-scale%20%E2%80%98ISO%202685%20like%E2%80%99%20fire%20resistance%20test" title=" small-scale ‘ISO 2685 like’ fire resistance test"> small-scale ‘ISO 2685 like’ fire resistance test</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=X-ray%20microtomography" title=" X-ray microtomography"> X-ray microtomography</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58907/fully-instrumented-small-scale-fire-resistance-benches-for-aeronautical-composites-assessment" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/58907.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">271</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1</span> Targeting TACI Signaling Enhances Immune Function and Halts Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Progression</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yong%20H%20Sheng">Yong H Sheng</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Beatriz%20Garcill%C3%A1n"> Beatriz Garcillán</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eden%20Whitlock"> Eden Whitlock</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yukli%20Freedman"> Yukli Freedman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SiLing%20Yang"> SiLing Yang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M%20Arifur%20Rahman"> M Arifur Rahman</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nicholas%20Weber"> Nicholas Weber</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fabienne%20Mackay"> Fabienne Mackay</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is closely associated with immune dysfunction, yet the mechanisms underlying this immune deficiency remain poorly understood. Transmembrane Activator and CAML Interactor (TACI), a receptor known for its role in IL-10 regulation and autoimmunity, to the best of our knowledge has not been investigated in the context of anti-tumor immunity or its impact on CLL progression. This study addresses the gap by exploring the role of TACI in regulating CLL cells within the tumor microenvironment and its broader effects on disease progression and immune competence. We utilized the Eµ-TCL1 mouse model to generate CLL mice deficient in TACI and examined the consequences of TACI loss in adoptive transfer models over a five-week period. Comprehensive transcriptomic analysis, including RNA sequencing and microarray, was employed to determine TACI’s influence on the CLL gene expression profile. Additionally, we studied TACI’s direct role in CLL cell migration and immune modulation using patient-derived CLL cells in culture and Patient-Derived Xenograph (PDX) models. Our findings demonstrate that TACI signaling plays a pivotal role in promoting CLL progression and immune suppression. Loss of TACI signaling significantly inhibited CLL development and enhanced immune functionality. When TACI+/+ or TACI-/- TCL1 CLL cells were transferred into wild-type recipient mice, those receiving TACI-deficient cells showed reduced disease progression and lower incidence of CLL. Mice with TACI-/- CLL cells exhibited normalized serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and IL-10, restored proportions of T-cell subsets, and improved immune compartment function compared to counterparts with TACI+/+ CLL cells. Mechanistically, TACI-deficient CLL cells expressed significantly lower levels of IL-10, TNF, and inhibitory receptors such as PD-L1 and PD-L2. These cells also display restored circulating immunoglobulin levels and responses to T cell-dependent antigens, highlighting a recovery of immune competence. Further mechanistic studies revealed that TACI signaling drives CLL cell migration and homing to the spleen, where these cells actively establish an immunosuppressive microenvironment that supports immune evasion and tumor growth. Patient-derived CLL cells and PDX models confirmed TACI’s direct role in enhancing CLL cell migration and fostering immune suppression, emphasizing its critical function in the tumor microenvironment. By disrupting TACI signaling, we observed a reduction in CLL-associated immune suppression and tumor progression, offering a promising therapeutic avenue. This study establishes, for the first time, that targeting TACI disrupts key mechanisms underlying CLL progression while preserving vital immune functions. Unlike existing treatments that often impair immunity and lead to infection-related complications, TACI inhibition offers the dual benefit of controlling disease and maintaining immune homeostasis. These findings provide a strong rationale for developing therapeutic strategies that inhibit TACI as a means to improve outcomes in CLL patients. Beyond its implications for CLL, this research underscores the broader importance of TACI in regulating immune-tumor interactions, paving the way for future studies into its role in other malignancies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=chronic%20lymphocytic%20leukemia" title="chronic lymphocytic leukemia">chronic lymphocytic leukemia</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=TACI" title=" TACI"> TACI</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=IL-10" title=" IL-10"> IL-10</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=immune%20suppression" title=" immune suppression"> immune suppression</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/195108/targeting-taci-signaling-enhances-immune-function-and-halts-chronic-lymphocytic-leukemia-progression" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/195108.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">3</span> </span> </div> </div> </div> </main> <footer> <div id="infolinks" class="pt-3 pb-2"> <div class="container"> <div style="background-color:#f5f5f5;" class="p-3"> <div class="row"> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> About <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">About Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support#legal-information">Legal</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/WASET-16th-foundational-anniversary.pdf">WASET celebrates its 16th foundational anniversary</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Account <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile">My Account</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Explore <li><a href="https://waset.org/disciplines">Disciplines</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conferences">Conferences</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/conference-programs">Conference Program</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/committees">Committees</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Publications</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Research <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts">Abstracts</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org">Periodicals</a></li> <li><a href="https://publications.waset.org/archive">Archive</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Open Science <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Philosophy.pdf">Open Science Philosophy</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Science-Award.pdf">Open Science Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Open-Society-Open-Science-and-Open-Innovation.pdf">Open Innovation</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Postdoctoral-Fellowship-Award.pdf">Postdoctoral Fellowship Award</a></li> <li><a target="_blank" rel="nofollow" href="https://publications.waset.org/static/files/Scholarly-Research-Review.pdf">Scholarly Research Review</a></li> </ul> </div> <div class="col-md-2"> <ul class="list-unstyled"> Support <li><a href="https://waset.org/page/support">Support</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Contact Us</a></li> <li><a href="https://waset.org/profile/messages/create">Report Abuse</a></li> </ul> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="container text-center"> <hr style="margin-top:0;margin-bottom:.3rem;"> <a href="https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" target="_blank" class="text-muted small">Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International License</a> <div id="copy" class="mt-2">© 2024 World Academy of Science, Engineering and Technology</div> </div> </footer> <a href="javascript:" id="return-to-top"><i class="fas fa-arrow-up"></i></a> <div class="modal" id="modal-template"> <div class="modal-dialog"> <div class="modal-content"> <div class="row m-0 mt-1"> <div class="col-md-12"> <button type="button" class="close" data-dismiss="modal" aria-label="Close"><span aria-hidden="true">×</span></button> </div> </div> <div class="modal-body"></div> </div> </div> </div> <script src="https://cdn.waset.org/static/plugins/jquery-3.3.1.min.js"></script> <script src="https://cdn.waset.org/static/plugins/bootstrap-4.2.1/js/bootstrap.bundle.min.js"></script> <script src="https://cdn.waset.org/static/js/site.js?v=150220211556"></script> <script> jQuery(document).ready(function() { /*jQuery.get("https://publications.waset.org/xhr/user-menu", function (response) { jQuery('#mainNavMenu').append(response);
