husband and I felt a little more like kama'ainas, or locals, when fifth-generation Hanalei farmer Lyndsey Haraguchi-Nakayawa led us through scenery previously closed to the public. Starting in September 2005, Lyndsey has given weekly public tours of the family's taro fields and National Register rice mill, familiar to visitors at the Hanalei Valley scenic overlook. </div></div> <div id="bodytext_bottom" class="bodytext bodytext_bottom"><div id="fontprefs_bottom" class="georgia md"><p>Meeting at 8 a.m. on Wednesday morning, we started our journey with a taro shake as Lyndsey traced her family's stories of saving their equipment from the valley's frequent flooding, efforts to farm the taro organically and the recent invasion of the dreaded apple snail. We sighted the endangered Kauai honeycreeper and toured the inner workings of Hawaii's last remaining rice mill.
