This essay will recast this agreement within the contemporary reception of Schelling, notably by Slavoj Žižek. But despite Žižek's important contribution to Schelling studies, his Hegelian reading of Schelling via psychoanalysis does little to resolve the problem of whether Schelling is a transition thinker or systematizer in his own right. In recent years, this problem is renewed by focusing on Schelling's significant leverage over his major rivals in terms of the centrality of Nature in his works. Iain Hamilton Grant's Philosophies of Nature After Schelling is by far the most crucial undertaking in this respect, enabling recent scholarship to reexamine Schelling's naturephilosophy in light of our current ecological predicament. But a key element is absent in Grant's naturalistic treatment. D'Alfonso. Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von Schelling (1775-1854) is one of the most interesting and controversial figures of classical German philosophy. A constant research, oriented by the elaboration of a system able to keep life, history and freedom together, leads the philosopher of the identity to trace a continuous and coherent path, sometimes characterized by sudden changes of direction, that never leaves unexplored any field of philosophical or not philosophical knowledge and of reality. The articulated development of Schelling's thought has evident elements of originality that express that "philosophical genius", which allowed him to be early involved into the heated philosophical debate of the time, in order to propose his own and original reflection on the role of philosophy as a systematic discipline. The critical edition of his works, begun in 1976 and still in progress at the Schelling-Kommission of the Bayerische Akademie der Wissenschaften, and the publication in the last decades of various studies show a renewed interest in Schelling's thought. The recent death of Xavier Tilliette, one of the greatest interpreters of Schelling's thought, represents an occasion to question on the legacy and the influence that this philosophy had and still has on the contemporary thought. These elements, added to the undeniable importance of the author in the framework of classical German philosophy, offer innumerable points for historical-philosophical and theoretical reflections. This issue of "Lo Sguardo" intends to investigate the several aspects of Schelling's "becoming" thought, with the aim of reconstructing the fundamental questions that form the backbone of its system. He proposed this formulation in response to Kant’s critical inventory of reason offering to reclaim philosophy from its entanglement in pre-critical or dogmatic traditions. But Kant avoided to ground reason in the notion of externality, the in-itself, which, owing to its pre-critical derivation, must give way to the a prioris and categories of the understanding. Meanwhile, by renewing the problem of the in-itself via the self-positing ego, Fichte was the first to challenge the Kantian legacy. But the emphasis on subjectivity through its power of self-positing gave way to what in principle negates nature as the true ground of the in- itself; in Schelling’s description, the equivalent of the annihilation of nature. Comparatively, Schelling proposed to demonstrate the reverse, which is the extinction of the subject that has continued to nourish the reflexive standpoint of reason. To accomplish this end, Schelling invoked in his Philosophy of Art, one of the places in which he extended his discussion of the so-called identity-system, the concept of the ideal type, or rather, humanity’s current morbid condition, many cultural theorists, from Mark Fischer to Jonathan Crary, Elie Ayache, and Boaventura de Souza Santos, come to the same conclusion: the contemporary is marked by a compulsive hyper-present that colonizes both the past and future, converting all expressions of difference into its monological movement. In doing so, what is currently called the Neo-colonial Order or Global Capitalism, makes sure that no event likely to disrupt its logic can occur. The aim of this paper is to underline how a revaluation of German Idealism (and more precisely, of what we call the “Hegel-Schelling debate on World History”) can provide us with a consistent framework to describe this logic, but also point out possible alternatives. To do so, the paper proceeds in three steps. First, it argues that Hegel’s philosophy provides the most consistent conceptual framework to approach the specific temporal logic of late modernity in which we are still enclosed today. In fact, the paper insists on the recursive mode in which the Hegelian dialectic operates. It shows how the latter subsequently drives the unfolding of history, by gradually erasing alternative temporal systems and cultures in its quest for absolute self-referentiality. Second, the paper revaluates Schelling’s Philosophical Inquiries into the Essence of Human Freedom as an original answer to Hegel’s eventual monological perspective on World History. In fact, the paper interrogates the meaning of Schelling’s insistence on the innately repressed, chaotic, obscure, matrix, and material principle (the Ungrund) that grounds the unfolding of the modern world system when approached in light of World History issues. Through the mediation of William Blake’s literary and visual work, the paper excavates the social realities enclosed in Schelling’s metaphysical cosmology. It shows that the dark principle can be seen as figuring the erased and yet crucial role played by (women) domestic labor, slavery, and nature exploitation for the rise of the modern world system. The paper thus reads Schelling’s 1809 text as staging the conflict between the explicit telos of the modernization program initiated by the West, namely the “mondialatinisation” of the globe that sets it up in his image, and a deep past that cannot be sublated. It shows how this noncontemporary and nonlinear force defers infinitely the end of history and complexifies modernity’s linear temporal system. Anthony Bruno</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">Schelling tends to be either over-assimilated or under-assimilated with the highest ambitions of German idealism. A prominent reading sees him as an absolute idealist who successfully systematizes philosophy. An equally prominent reading sees his chief contribution as a skeptical attack on Hegelian systematicity. Both readings are incomplete: Schelling is neither simply a systematizer nor an anti-systematizer. On the one hand, he contributes to the idealist project from its inception, inspiring both Fichte’s identification of critique with doctrine and Hegel’s speculative reconception of critique. On the other hand, his view takes many turns, all of which concern how a system is even possible after Kant. In this, Schelling remains critical of the German idealist project. But his is an internal critique, one with a deep stake in the outcome. I will argue that we cannot grasp Schelling’s critique unless we trace it—earlier than scholars do—to the “Philosophical Letters on Dogmatism and Criticism” of 1795/96. Written at the outset of his career, this text marks the beginning of Schelling’s engagement with the problem of systematicity, namely, that our power of judgment makes the task of deriving a system of conditions from a first principle necessary while that capacity’s finitude makes this task impossible. Save for Schelling’s identity philosophy, a phase that tempts scholars to peg him as an absolute idealist, his life-long critique of idealism seeks to articulate the intractability of this problem. My conceptual aim is to reconstruct this critique from Schelling’s objection in the “Letters” to Fichte’s view that the system of idealism or ‘Wissenschaftslehre’ is unrivalled by Spinozism. I will interpret his objection as charging Fichte with misrepresenting what it is to live a system of philosophy, viz., what it is for one’s system to be commensurate with one’s finitude. In offering this interpretation, my historical aim will be to provide the context for understanding Schelling’s Philosophical Investigations into the Essence of Human Freedom of 1809, widely—though falsely—thought to constitute his initial attack on the idealist project. In §1, I unpack the seed of Schelling’s critique of Fichte from the “Anti-critique”, a piece published at the time of the “Letters” in which he suggests the Wissenschaftslehre is incapable of refuting Spinozism. In §2, I reconstruct Schelling’s argument for this from the “Letters”, showing why he thinks the Wissenschaftslehre cannot exclude Spinozism. My reconstruction relies on the form of systematicity, my term for Schelling’s criterion that the power of judgment must posit a first principle from which it must then derive a system. Under this criterion, judgment seeks what it cannot secure since it is a finite power—hence, the problem of systematicity. The form of systematicity, then, is a problematic form: it assigns a task we cannot complete. Schelling’s insight is that a system’s liveability depends on its incompleteness. A system can only be its susceptibility to the limitations of our finitude. In §3, I show this insight drives Schelling’s claim in the Freiheitsschrift that a system’s ground is contingent because it is human.
